In 2024,theJonasMusicprojectwelcomed25pupils.Theyattendedmusiclessonsin piano,flute, recorder,
cello,violonandinmusictheory.Singingwiththechoiriscompulsory.Itisapleasuretohearthe children.
Even boys appear to enjoy singing !

Thehighlightofheyearhasbeendevisingthemusical"JonahandtheWhale"(byAmyWhite). The
workshopwhich took place during the Mid-TermHolidaysin May 2024,showed how much the children, their
Mumsandteachersweredelightedbycreatingaperformance,whichhasbeenplayedinJuly,infrontof a
public, at the Hill House International School Founders' Hall, 2, Radnor Walk, London, S.W.3

DarcyDixon,a memberof our Alumni (studentat the RoyalAcademyof Dramaand the Arts, RADA)has been
of great assistance to the children by bringing them to a higher level of expression (A huge "thank you!).
The performance has been a wonderful success!

AhugesurprisecameduringSummer:Aninvitationfromthe"KinderAkademieFulda"toperform "Jonah
and the Whale" at the Children's Museum Fulda,  on September 21st 2024.

Tobeinvitedtogoabroad,tostaywithhostfamilies,tomakefriends,toperforminfrontofan audience,
that differedsubstantiallyfromwhat they had experienced,so far…has been, for the children,a moving and
great experience!

During Summer 2024, a pupil, Erik, won a "choral scholarship" (Rodolphus Foundation).

We congratulateall studentswho have passed their Exams,some of therm with "Merit"(AssociatedBoard of
the Royal Schools of Music, ABRSM).

We had the pleasure of welcoming a volunteer, a student in Drama and Music (Birbeck College, London).

opportunity to study a year abroad).

beenteachingRecorderandClarinetattheJonasFoundationMusicProjectforfifteenyears.Shehas been
greatly appreciated for her invaluable teaching and her joyous spirit !

## **`FROM LONDON TO FULDA - REPORT ON THE JONAS LONDON PROJECT'S GROUP TRIP TO GERMANY, SEPTEMBER 2024`**

TheJonasFoundationhasaproudtraditionoftakingitsstudentsonvacationcamps,astheseprovide an
unparalleledopportunityforthechildrentobondoverspecialsharedexperiencesandtogettoknow each
othermorethoroughlythanispossibleduringourfewhourstogethereachSaturdaymorning,aswell as
giving them the thrill of performing to an audience beyond the usual familiar supporters on their home turf.
```

However,partlyduetothemajordisruptioncausedbythepandemicyearsaswellasthe increasing
headwindsweexperiencedatourformerhomebaseofStMatthew's-at-the-Elephant,itissomeyears since
we actually took a group of children abroad on any sort of performing tour.
```

```
Itwaswithmuchpleasure,then,thatweacceptedtheinvitationissuedbyProfTassiloBonzel,a former
colleagueofProfUlrichSigwart,forustobringsomestudentsfromourLondonprojectovertoGermany in
September2024,for a weekendin the historiccathedralcityof Fulda,an hour north-eastof Frankfurt. Every
September,Fuldahostsaculturalfestivalcalled'DieLangeNachtderMuseen'-akindofOpen House
Weekend for the city's many museums.
```

Thesubstanceofthetripwasanopportunitytoperformourmini-musicalbasedonthestoryof'Jonah and
theWhale'(whichwehadrecentlypremieredatoursummerconcertatFounders'HallinLondon)at the
Kinder-Akademie, and to participate in High Mass at Fulda's grand Baroque parish church, the Stadtkirche.
```

SoitwasthatthreeJonasstaff- FelixBuser,StephanieJamesandStuartWhatton- andaroundten children
(leavingtheirparentsbehind,insomecaseswithtrepidationandinothercaseswithacarefreesense of
excitement!)setofffromHeathrowAirportonFriday20September,boundforFrankfurt.AtFrankfurt we
weremetby ourhostsandconveyedby minibustoFulda,wherewe hadan initialphotostopontheedge of
town at the intriguinggiant concretesculptureof a whale,helpingus to get in the moodfor the themeof  our
musical!
```

WithProfTassiloandhiswifeHelen'smagnificenthome(amuseumandartgalleryinitself!)asour central
HQ,thechildrenwerebilletedovernightwithavarietyoflocalfamilies,whileProf&FrauSigwartand the
Jonasstaffenjoyedthecosyandatmospherichospitalityofoneofthecity'soldesthostelries,the Golden
Carp ('Goldener Karpfen').
```

Thefollowingmorning,wewereplacedinthehandsofaprofessionalguideforafascinatingtourof the
'Barockstadt'oldtown,aswellastheneo-classicalCathedralinwhoseelegantcryptwesawthelast resting
place of St Boniface.
```

```
We spentthe restof the day at the Kinder-Akademie- a crossbetweena youthclub,an activitycentreand a
very'hands-on'museum!Our mainfocuswasto rehearseand givetwoeveningperformancesof 'Jonah and
the Whale',lastinga little under half an hour apiece,and acted out to appreciativeaudiencesof several dozen
on each occasion.This allowedplentyof time for us all to explorethe museumdisplaysand games,and there
was a particularlyfascinatingexhibitionroomaboutthe humanheart,whichincludeda giant3-Dmock-up of
a heart and its circulatory chambers which one could actually clamber around inside!

OnSundaymorningwereassembledattheStadtkircheandweregivenawarmwelcomebythe presiding
ministerat the beginningof High Mass.Our children'schoirand soloistsperformedseveralsacredsongs and
chants during the course of the service, accompanied by Jonas musicians on flutes, cello and piano.
```

```
FollowingtheMasswereturnedtoourBonzelianHQandweretreatedtoadeliciousfarewelllunch, taking
theopportunitytosinghappybirthdaytoourprojectco-ordinatorFelix.(Iamsurethatamongst Felix's
birthdays to date, this will have ranked as one of his most memorable!)
```

The tripendedwitha leisurelygroupwalkto Fulda'smainrailwaystationfora trainto Frankfurtairport, and
asmoothflightbacktoHeathrow.Thegeneralfeelingamongsttheteacherswasthatthishadbeenone of
ourmostsuccessfulJonascampsever,notleastbecauseofthesuperbplanningandorganisationwhich had
gone into it on the part of our German hosts, as well as the warmth of their hospitality.
```

We were laterdelightedto be able to meetup with the Bonzelson theirvisitto the Britishcapitallaterin  the
autumn,andtheirdaughterFranka(whoiscurrentlystudyinginLondon)hashappilybeenabletodo some
volunteering at our weekly Jonas sessions at St Mary Newington.
```

## **`MEADOWS SCHOOL MUSIC PROJECT`** 

```
MeadowsSchoolinKentisaresidentialspecialschoolforchildrenwithsocial,emotionaland behavioural
difficulties.Childrencometothisschoolwhenithasnotbeenpossibleforthemtocontinuein mainstream
schooling.In most cases they have been excludedbecauseof violentor disruptivebehaviour,and some pupils
have been excluded from several schools in succession.
```

Mostofthesechildrenhavepoorprospectsforthefuture.Manyhaveproblemswithangerand frustration,
confidenceandself-esteem,socialinteractionandconcentration.TheJonasFoundationMusicProject was
startedin 2004withtheaimof givingthesechildrenthechancetodiscoversidesof themselvesthatthey do
notyetknowthroughplayingthecelloand takingpartin musicmaking.We hopethata loveand enjoyment
ofmusicwillhelpthemtolearnhowtoovercometheirdifficultiesandtodevelopinboththepersonal and
academic spheres.

In January2024,sixpupilsatMeadowsschoolwerehavingcellolessonseachweek.Allmadegood progress
overtheyear,andtwoespeciallycometomind.WhenI firstmetRichardin October2023he wasa tiny ball
of fury,shoutingand screamingin almostcontinuousboutsof rage.When I askedhim each weekif he would
liketohaveagoplayingthecello,hewouldeachweekshoutthathedidnotwantto.Then,oneweek in
February,whenI cameintohisclassroomheseemedmorecalm,andwhenI askedifhewouldliketo come
totryplayingthecelloherepliedthathewould.Inthatfirstsessionheonlyplayedforafewminutes,but I
wasamazedathisconcentrationandfocusasI hadsofaronlyseenhimincoherentwithrage!Againfor the
followingweekshe wantedtocomeforhis cellolesson,andI couldhardlybelievehowhis behavior seemed
completelytransformed!Hemadegoodprogressthroughouttheyear,andIquicklyrealisedthathehas a
strongmusicalmemory:when he has playeda tune a few times,he no longerneeds the musicbut can play it
by heart.It is incrediblehow his behaviorat schoolhas now becomeso differentin comparisonto how it was
when I first met him!
```

Anotherpupilthatcomestomindis Esther.Fromthefirsttimethatshetriedthecelloshecouldplaywith a
goodsoundand goodrhythm,and fromthe secondlessonshe startedto playsimpletunesthatused the left
hand. Estherlovesthe musical"Annie"which she seemsto knowfrommemory,and she can sing mostof the
songs by heart. She likes especiallythe song "It's a hard knock life", and sings it very nicely.After she had  been
playingforabouttwomonths,she saidthatshe wouldliketo playthissongon the cello,and wasso keen to
try that I wroteit out for her (althoughit is extremelydifficultfor someonewho has only just startedto  play!)
Withinafewweeksshehadlearnttoplaythefirstsectionofthesong,whichisalsothelastsectionof the
songas this partrepeats,but the middlesectionwas just toodifficultfor her. We developeda way of  playing
it thatshe playedthe firstsection,thenI playedthe middlesectionwithher singingalongto it, and then she
playedthelastsection.Iwasamazedthatshecouldlearntoplaythissosoonafterbeginningtolearn the
cello!
```

ThepupilsatMeadowsSchoolhavesomanyproblemsanddifficultiesthattheyhavetofaceeveryday. We
hopethatthejoyandfulfilmentofmusic-makingwillhelpthemastheystrivetoovercomethese troubles,
and to build more stable and happier lives for themselves!
```
