ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE

The lastfew yearshavebeen a verydisturbedand unsettledtimeforschoolsin the UK and elsewhere,as we
alltriedtocopewiththeCovidpandemicaswellaswecould.Becauseofthelockdownsimposedbythe UK
government, I had to stop teaching at Meadows School in March 2020 and could not resume until May 2022.
When I restartedlessons,it was more than two years that I had not been teachingthere, but about half of the
pupilsthatIhadbeenteachingbeforeCovidwerestillattheschool,andwereexcitedtobestarting their
cellolessonsagain!(Theotherhalfhadeithermoveduptosecondaryschoolorhadtransferredto other
schools.)
Withinthreeweeksofrestartinglessons,severalofthenewpupilshadaskediftheycouldtrythecello and
haddecidedthattheywouldlikeregularlessons.BythetimethattheacademicyearendedinJuly,I had
eleven pupils, and the Jonas Foundation Music Project was running again at Meadows School.
Afterthe summerholidayswe restartedlessonsagainin September.Againsomepupilshad movedup to the
secondarysite,andInowhadthreepupilsfrompre-Covidandfivewhohadjoinedsince.Duringthe next
threemonthsthreenewpupilsjoinedtheschool,ofwhichtwostartedtohavecellolessons.Sobythe time
wegottotheendoftheAutumnterm,theJonasFoundationMusicProjectwasagainfirmlyestablished at
Meadows School, and going very well!
WhenlessonsbeganagainaftertheChristmasholiday,itwasannouncedthattheHeadoftheJunior School
CamillaDoonanwas movingto the SeniorSchoolto take up the positionof DeputyHead of the whole school.
Camillahad been an excellenthead of the JuniorSchool, and had helpedto createa verycalmatmosphere in
the school. The new head is calledJohnOakleyand I had a long meetingwith him to tell him aboutthe Jonas
Foundationand toshowhimtheprojectson theJonasFoundationwebsite. He wasinterested, and was very
enthusiastic and positive about the cello project at Meadows School.
I was expectingthere to be a period that the schoolwas unsettledwhile pupils got used to the change of head
and got to know John, but in fact it all went smoothlywith very little disturbance. My pupils were always keen
to come to lessons, each enjoying them in their own way.
Stephenlikestoalwaysmakeupnewtunes,andtoplaythetunesthathemadeupinpreviouslessons. I
usuallyusethebook"CelloTimeJoggers"withpupils,andhe sometimeslikestoplaya tunefromthis book,
playingalongwiththeCD,butoftenheonlywantstomakeupandplayhisowntunes.Inthisway,he is
learning through making up his own tunes!
Richardhas a moreconventionalapproach, and everyweek he wants to learn at least one new tune from the
"Joggers"book.Someweeksinto the Summerterm he said to me that he would like to learn to read music. (I
normallywritethe fingernumberand the stringoverthe notesso pupils can play tunes withoutbeing able to
read musicproperly.)I was happyaboutthis, and explainedthe principlesto him, and he quickly understood.
From then on, each week he wanted to learn a new tune that I had not writtenthe finger numberson, and he
alsowantedtogobacktotuneshehadplayedbefore,playingthemthistimewithoutthefinger numbers
written on. I think he felt this was a liberation, and it was good to see how excited he was about it!

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE

At the end of the summerterm three of my pupils movedup to the senior school, and in the autumn two new
pupilsstarted. One of thesewas John,a smalleightyearold whoalwaysseemedto be in a rage- he seemed
tobeatinyballoffury!EachweekIaskedhimifhewouldlikeagoonthecello,andhewouldsee other
pupilsfromhisclasscomingouttohavetheirlessons,buthealwaysrefused.Thenoneweekhe seemed
calmer, and when I asked if he would like to come for a go he said "Sure" as if he came every week! He settled
quicklyas I showed him how to hold the cello and he played two tunes, plucking, both by himselfand with the
CD.Andthenhecalmlyannouncedthathewouldliketogobacktoclass.I praisedhimandtoldhis teacher
how well he'd done, and from then on, every other week or so he has been comingfor his cello lessons. In the
third lessonI showedhim how to hold the bow, and since then he sometimesplayswith the bow, but usually
prefers plucking. But the transformation in his mood has been quite incredible! I hope it continues this way!
And so we cameto the end of the year. The schooldid not do an end of yearconcert, but threeof the pupils
wantedtoplaysometunestotheirclass,soonthelastsessionoftheyear,we wentintotheirclassroom so
they could play a little impromptu concert. They seemed very happy to be doing this!
Ihopeandbelievethatmusicishelpingthesechildrenintheirdevelopment,astheyastheytryto grow
through their difficulties and problems!
