c} Festivals
Following the cancellation of the festivals in 2020 and after careful consideration, the directors of
Chalke Valley History Festivals Limited took the decision in March 2021 to proceed with planning for a
festival in June 2021. The directors of CV Schools History Festival Limited decided at the sam& b'me
that the schools festival should not take place in June 2021 due lo the continuing pressure on schools
caused by the pandemic. Although the lockdown oslrictions imposed on the UK were not fully lifted
by the time ol the festival, the festival took place successfully as planned in June 2021. Signrficanl
changes were made lo the fomial of the festival with a shorter duration and a new Ould￿r
programme of tslks not held in marquees which wero particularly popular. Overall, tho festival was
highly SU￿9S8ful due to the excellent programme and due lo the lack of similar face-lo-face events
during the prior year and a half of the pandemic. The trustees would like to record their thanks to all
the staff and direetors of the festival who made il such a SUc￿S in the most drffiCU￿ of
circumstsnces.
Flnancial r8view
The intention of the trustees is that the principal SOUTce of funding for the Trust will be surpluses
generated by the festivals as well as from direct donations and third party funding. Since the festival
was first held in 2011. it has been in a period of development and, consequently, surpluses were not
generate(t until 2014. The directors of the festival and the trustees have been Conscious Sin￿ 2014
that the festival and Trust needed to continue to builtl up reserves of capital for the future, particularty
given the ulilisation of such reserves in 2016. In view of this prudent policy, the Trust entered the 2020
financial year with a substantial reserve and thus was able to handle the can￿lIation of the 2020
festiva15. The financial reserves poSit￿n of the Trust remains strong in 2021 due lo the continuing
support of the donors and the careful stewardships of the Trust and ils resources and the festwals.
Chalke Valley History Festivals Lim((ed received the final instalmenl of the £260,000 from the Arts
Council administered Cultural Recovery Fund of the UK govemmenl in 2021.
The Trust had voluntsry income of £221,83712020." £268,732>, investment income of £412020.. £551
and, after making grants of £149,525 12020." £79,816) and incurring governan￿ costs of £1,564
{2020'. £5,536}, il recorded an increase in nel funds of £68,366 12020.. £181,380). Al the period end,
the Trust had cash of £411,71912020. £342,790} and lolal nel assets of £406,901 12020.. £338,353).
Policy on reserves
The resetves of the Trust comprise a £30,000 long-lerm reserve held lo support ils trading
subsidiaries and, in addition the trust holds a level of free reseNes in unrestricted funds of £2,000.
This free reserve has been adopted in line w(th Charity Comrnission guidance in order to ensure that
