In planning our activities for the year we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings. The Association provides a jazz education programme for young people in Devon. The Association organises 8 rehearsal days from September to April and a 3 day residential in the Autumn half term holiday to develop young musicians jazz skills and nurture their self-confidence and social skills.

**Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)**

The orchestras perform a number of public jazz concerts every year in Devon and nationally. On a bi-annual basis the Association organises a tour to a foreign jazz festival for players to perform and listen to jazz on an international basis.

## **Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)**

The DYJO Association offers financial assistance towards DYJO tuition fees on a scaled basis.

You **may choose** to include further statements, where relevant, about:

The amount of assistance can be higher or lower than the guidance percentage depending on the outcome of the committee's decision.

The Association uses self-employed consultants to provide musical expertise, but all other functions are undertaken by volunteers.

## **Section E Financial review**

**Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves**

In line with prior years, part of the total funds are ring fenced as a reserve fund of £15,000 to enable us to operate for a period of time with a minimum membership and no more income than that received from membership income alone.

**Details of any funds materially in deficit**

## **Further financial review details (Optional information)**

Total income for the year was £28,768.44 and total expenditure was £33,338.86. This represents a significant decrease in both expenditure and income compared to previous recent years, primarily because of this not being a touring year.

The primary income sources are a) membership fees, which remained at £300 per member (with 50% second sibling discount) and totalled £13,820, an increase on the previous year (£12,395), as a consequence of more members, and b) from the Devon Music Education Hub (£7,000).

## **Section F Other optional information**

We are planning another trip to the Vienne Jazz Festival in July 2026.

We aim to continue increasing the number of participants in the jazz programme and to develop our outreach work in schools.
