In planning our activities for the year we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our trustee meetings. The Association provides a jazz education programme for young people in Devon. The Association organises 8 rehearsal days from September to April and a 3 day residential in the Autumn half term holiday to develop young musicians jazz skills and nurture their self-confidence and social skills.

The orchestras perform a number of public jazz concerts every year in Devon and nationally. On a bi-annual basis the Association organises a tour to a foreign jazz festival for players to perform and listen to jazz on an international Summary of the main basis. activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit)

Section E Financial review

In line with prior years, part of the total funds are ring fenced as a reserve fund Brief statement of the of £12,000 to enable us to operate for a period of time with a minimum charity’s policy on reserves membership and no more income than that received from membership income alone. This fund has been increased to £15,000 for the start of the 2024/2025 season to reflect today’s higher costs.

Details of any funds materially in deficit

Further financial review details (Optional information)

Total income for the year was £41,194.05 and total expenditure was £42,760.54. This represents a significant increase in both expenditure and income compared to previous recent years, primarily as a consequence of the Vienne Tour.

The income for the Tour was £22,333.13 (comprising tour fee receipts of £20,400 and fundraising income net of hire costs of £1,933.13). The total expenditure for the tour was £22,224.45, a difference of only £108.68 so the tour just broke even thanks to the help of the additional fundraising undertaken in the year. (This is based on allocating all of the fundraising events in year to the tour).

Section F Other optional information

The coming year will see continuing efforts to recover from the effects of the COVID epidemic on music making activities. We aim to continue increasing the number of participants in the jazz programme and to develop our outreach work in schools.

Section G Declaration

The trustees declare that they have approved the trustees’ report above.
