## **ORGANISATION AND STRUCTURE**
## **Mango Tree Goa**
Mango Tree Goa is a charitable trust registered with the Charity Commission, number 1148049. It was founded on 9[th] June 2012. The objects of the Charity as set out in the Governing Document are:-
The relief of poverty and sickness, the preservation of health, the advancement of the education of disadvantaged children and young people up to the age of 25 in India, primarily but not exclusively in the state of Goa, by providing grants, items and services to individuals in need and/or charities or other organisations with the same objects.
From the very start, the Charity operated without paid staff or an office and continues to do so. It is administered on an entirely voluntary basis by the Trustees. We are also fortunate that our accounts are maintained and drawn up on a voluntary basis and that our website is developed and maintained by a volunteer. The contribution of volunteers means that more of donors’ money is available to fund projects on the ground in Goa.
We understand that the best way to deliver our objectives in Goa is through Indian Trusts made up of local people who understand cultural values, religious sensitivities, and official requirements better than we ever can. Consequently, we work with partner organisations. During 2023/24 our partners continued to be The Mango Tree Trust and the Grace Educational Trust. The UK charity and the Goan Trusts are separate legal bodies, and each must work to the legal requirements of their country. However, in practical terms, we work as one to achieve our shared objectives.
## **SUMMARY OF THE MAIN ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN FOR THE PUBLIC BENEFIT IN RELATION TO OUR OBJECTIVES**
In planning our activities for the year, we kept in mind the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit at our Trustee meetings. During 2023/24 the Charity continued to meet its objectives by supporting the following projects:-
- The Mango House and Mango Tree House projects based at Mapusa. The projects work together to help children living in slums and other poor-quality accommodation to navigate their way out of the cycle of poverty. The projects provide a registered pre-primary school and afternoon tuition classes. These activities help disadvantaged children access and remain in school thereby discouraging child labour and empowering children to break free from a life of poverty. Whilst the support given focuses heavily on education, a daily meal, medical care, and fun activities are also provided.
- The Chimbel project which is based in Indira Nagar, Chimbel - a slum of around 10,000 inhabitants. The project provides a pre-primary school and afternoon tuition classes which help disadvantaged children access and remain in schools.
## **SUMMARY OF THE MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS DURING THE YEAR**
Our main achievements continue to revolve around the provision of activities which help disadvantaged children stay fit and healthy and to access and remain in school. Working with our partners we achieved the following:-
- Funding of the Mango House and Mango Tree House projects which work together and during 2023/24 supported around 300 disadvantaged children daily through the provision of pre-primary schooling, afternoon tuition classes, outside tuition classes, meals, support with health care, extra curriculum activities and a counselling and support service.

- Funding of the rent, afternoon tuition classes, a pre-primary teacher, play resources and extra curriculum activities for the Chimbel project. Our commitment to fund afternoon tuition classes meant these could restart after almost four years of absence and we were delighted to be able to do so.
- Funding the provision of books, stationery, school bags and uniforms for all the children at Mango House and Mango Tree House. These help to ensure that children can take an active part in lessons and have greater self-esteem at school.
- Funding the university fees for young people from the Mango House and Chimbel projects to enable them to continue their studies.
- Funding the provision of a dedicated social worker to support both parents and children.
- Providing financial support for older children to go for outside tuition classes which ensured they got more tailored support with subjects they were finding difficult.
- Funding to enable the completion of the extension and all the necessary equipment at the Mango Tree House project. In October all remaining services were moved from Mango House to Mango Tree House and the former permanently closed. Providing permanent, fit for purpose premises for all the children at Mango House and Mango Tree House marks a major milestone in the Charity’s history.
## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**
Income of £89,992 was higher than the previous year (£84,259) which mainly reflects an increase in regular donations (£37,522), Gift Aid (£7,647) and a one-off donation of £5,000. Regular support is invaluable, enabling the Charity to plan for the future and ensure continuation of support. Our Christmas Challenge and Back to School Appeals together raised £9,115 which was a reduction of over £6,300 compared to previous years. Other sources of income continued to include general donations, grants and fundraising. We are very mindful that the number of overseas visitors to Goa remains low compared to pre-pandemic and this has resulted in significantly fewer visitors to our projects and fewer opportunities to fundraise in Goa. The post covid economic landscape and cost of living difficulties remains challenging and concerning.
In the same period expenditure totalled £85,513 of which £83,589 related to Grants and Charitable Activities in Goa. Expenditure was around £4,250 more than the previous year and largely reflects the fact that income was higher than the previous year.
The Charity had £18,057 in hand on 31[st] March, 2024.
## **RESERVES POLICY**
As in previous years, Trustees reviewed the Charity’s reserves at the year end. The Charity has an approved Reserves policy as follows:-
Mango Tree Goa requires reserves to protect against fluctuating income, falling exchange rates, contingencies, to start up new projects pending identifying income streams and to achieve its objective of ensuring its major projects in Goa have their own permanent accommodation.
As the Charity had £18,057 in unrestricted reserves at the end of the year; the level is considered justifiable in the circumstances.

## **PUBLIC BENEFIT STATEMENT**
The trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Commission in exercising their powers and duties.
## **FUTURE PLANS**
We are thrilled to have achieved our objective of providing a permanent base from which to support disadvantaged children in Goa and to reap the benefits in reduced costs now that rent no longer forms part of our expenses. Having achieved this objective, trustees took the opportunity to review their founding objectives at our latest meeting and confirmed that, some twelve years later, the remaining objectives remain unchanged. For many years, however, we have wished to develop a College Assistance Scheme for the many children in Goa who are unable to continue in further education due to lack of funds. Whilst we recognise that fundraising will remain challenging, we plan to expand our support for further education in future. This is an exciting opportunity, and we look forward to developing our plans this year.
