Welcome from the Chair

It is time to celebrate another successful year of Scouting within Blacktoft Beacon District.

The District has maintained its membership and grown in some sections. It is great to see an increasing number of Squirrel Dreys now active in Blacktoft Beacon.

The District, along with the Groups within it, are making the transition into the new Trustee led organisation. This is in order to strengthen leadership and governance. Changes like this always bring a level of challenge, and I would like to thank all of those involved in working on this transition in the District.

We still have some leadership and governance gaps to fill, both in the District Team and at Group levels, and are working to find new leaders and adult supporters.

Again, across the region young people have benefitted from great events taking place over the past year, at District, Group and Section levels. You will see some of these reflected in the pictures in this report. Thankfully the weather was good for this year's St. Georges Day event at Beverley Racecourse with nearly a thousand young people and leaders present.

My thanks to everyone that contributes to make Blacktoft Beacon District a great fellowship for our members to learn skills for life.

A Year of Scouting

Thank you for all the work that you do in the Groups and sections in the District. Blacktoft Beacon remains a strong and active District with the County.

The great strength of the Groups is that we continue to have a Lead Volunteer in each of our Groups and although there have been some changes of Lead Volunteer, Section leaders and young people continue to be supported at local level. My thanks to those new Lead Volunteers who have stepped in to fill a vacant role.

Numbers remain very healthy with the 2024 census showing 1002 young people and 252 leaders and adults in supporters of the groups. And you/ we’re not finished yet as the Scout Association have set growth targets for all Districts in the Country.

What this means for Blacktoft is another 89 young people in existing sections and the launching of 5 new squirrel sections. Individual targets have been cascaded to Groups via their Lead Volunteers. The measure point for this is the 2026 census so good luck and go for it. If your Group has not received a target, your challenge is to retain your numbers and grow wherever possible

Activities remain the key to attracting and retaining young people. Nights Away continue at a very high level which is great to record. In the calendar year a total of 89 Nights Away events were held and the total to date for 2024 stands at 63. They range from sleepovers for the younger sections to traditional week-long summer camps.

Events arranged by the District also feature in the programme and I’m pleased to record the formation of an events team with different adults coming forward to front a tram to arrange specific events.

As well as taking part in the County led trip to Austria last summer when Blacktoft leaders filled some of the key posts, the event team have arranged;

• Three sleepovers at The Deep in Hull

• Welly Walk at Raywell

• St George‘s Day celebration with Beverley and Hornsea District at Beverley Racecourse

• Annual Camp Craft competition at Tablers Wood

• A fun day at William Den

All these in addition to running events in their Groups.

As a result of the high amount of events it will come as no surprise to learn of the large number of adult awards and I was privileged to be present at the annual St George‘s Day Award Presentation when the fantastic work was given recognition. My congratulations to all recipients and my thanks to Linda and Joy for managing the process.

Finally my thanks for the support of Scott and the other hard working members Trustee Board for their dedication and commitment to sound governance of District affairs and my thanks also to members of the District Team, Josh, Wendy and Rory for keeping me on the ‘straight and narrow.’

A Year of Growth

2024 Census Results

Record numbers!

We continue our growth as a district, surpassing the 1000 mark in number of young people for the first time since covid, with an increase of 14 young people. Well done to the group leadership teams who nave worked with their sections to help deliver this growth.

Our Explorer provision has also continued to grow, hitting 100 young people. This marks an increase of 25 Explorers and a record number for Blacktoft Beacon since its inception.

Looking ahead…

Focusing on growth means focusing on volunteer recruitment, and the next year will see a number of changes in how we volunteer rolled out as part if the programme of Transformation.

We will begin to see groups adopt the new ways of volunteering, changing how we welcome volunteers so they feel warmly welcomed to Scouting, and the introduction of the new membership system that will make learning, permits and much more easier.

Each group has been given growth targets, with a number targeted in opening Squirrel Dreys. This growth allows us to continue this positive momentum and increase the number of young people learning #SkillsForLife.

Congratulations to everyone who earned their Wood Beads and Length of Service Awards in the past year too.

14-24 Team

I can’t believe it's been a whole year since I last reported on what the Explorer team has been up. In the past 12 months it has been refreshing to see so many adventurous activities taken by the Explorers around the district. I’ve enjoyed attending a number of section meetings where I have seen climbing, archery, water activities, survival skills, cooking and games. And I’ve witnessed a great level of teamwork and collaboration between the sections, all of which embodies the values of Scouting.

In this past year we reached the highest number of Explorers in the district since it’s formation, with the latest census figures showing exactly 100 members. Thank you to the section leaders who have helped us deliver key skills to even more Explorers. Let’s carry on this trajectory into the next year.

We had about a quarter of our Explorers join us for the Camp Craft competition in May, where they socialised between the sections, supported the Scout and Cubs competitions and got stuck in with some traditional Scouting activities.

This year also saw the opening of a new Explorer Scout Unit in Willerby, thank you to the team locally for instigating and delivering this. It means we can retain more young people in Scouting - continuing their development of skills for life.

team members in the new 14-24 Team. Charlotte will continue to focus her time on supporting Young Leaders whilst Gayle continues to support Explorer sections in a more general capacity.

On the topic of Young Leaders, I’ve been pleased to see even more young people get involved and volunteer within one of the younger sections in their group. We’ve seen a record number of Young Leaders this year which translates into approximately half of all members aged 14-18 being part of the Young Leader Scheme. This provides responsibility and an opportunity to learn that helps the young people develop themselves. It also provides an opportunity for groups to build the number of adult leaders as we continue to see members continue into adult roles when they turn 18.

Finally, we have begun supporting the Humberside Network Unit as they have established themselves, and encouraging all of our members to join when they turn 18 to continue their Scouting journey and work towards top awards.

We hope for more of the same next year, with more adventure, more fun, more skills being shared and more. I know the section teams will continue their hard work and dedication which
