Horcultural Therapy Trust (HTT)

Chair’s Annual Report

With contribuons from Paul Keller, Deb Hoskin and Tonny Steenhagen

AGM held at registered address 4pm on 12th December 2024

This year HTT has supported over 60 parcipants, experiencing moderate to severe mental health issues, towards improved mental health and holisc well being, at HTT gardens. In July 2024 we have 37 parcipants on our books aending HTT. Open ended support have meant on average over 200 hours per parcipant. Each week is a lifesaver for some due to crisis and trauma. HTT will have supported at least 15 parcipants in crisis to have stayed at home rather than having needed to be in hospital for safety. We have supported 4 parcipants through to hospital and being safe and provided aer care on return to community.

This HTT year has been another year of transion for HTT alongside the local community transioning sll from the Pandemic, in which HTT has endeavoured to develop to meet growing mental health needs, with a rise in the numbers of people experiencing mental health issues. Also with 2 appreciated support staff leaving prior to December 2023 and since Dennis Trewin’s rerement in Feb 2022 (co-founder along with Deb Hoskin in 2012), there had been a need to bring a new good staff and volunteer team together to offer more hours, while maintaining and growing HTT’s quality of service. The recognion was of the value of varied skills. Dan Stroud joined HTT as an employee in September 2023, Dan being a skilled qualified joiner who had parcipated and volunteered for HTT for 2 years and also found benefits to his mental health. Lived experience is valued at HTT and 80% of staff, volunteers and trustees have some form of lived experience. Dan’s role was and is again funded for Fridays weekly by the Pearn Charitable Trust. Dan also has therapeuc training.

organisaonal support as charity project officer. Fiona also has years of voluntary support roles. Ciara joined HTT in April 2024 as Project Manager alongside Deb Hoskin, Ciara has a background as an NHS Occupaonal Therapist and also in gardening therapy, and is gied in arts and cras. So come April the new team had formed. The HTT team also included the kind facilitaon, especially towards the new developments, of two new trustees, Kayleigh and Charlie, alongside founding trustee Paul and Jackie who has been helping HTT for a few years now. Together then with even more new volunteers from backgrounds such as lived experience and years of volunteering, to rered GP , to rered ESOL tutor (English for Speakers of Other Languages).

Financially, as reports will show, HTT met some real challenges this year and so through which HTT are very grateful to have received such tremendous support which enabled us to keep going into the new and developing, which we connue into 2024-2025 on a path set with constant conversaons and checking in

employing needed staff, at first with less hours and Deb temporarily reducing any Community/ Outreach session hours, so that we could begin to meet needs within the growing number of parcipants within the HTT garden. In dayme rota’s as needed . Naonal Loery Community Fund and Postcode Loery Trust funded addional hours daily, which began the ability to provide more hours for more parcipaon.. This was all so that needs could be met in the parcularly unique quality way that HTT provides through such varied individual benefits, each towards improved well being. All parcipant –led. Changes were made by voluntary hours being worked including towards funding applicaons, unl funding was in place to cover more salaried hours, especially more session hours. HTT are so very grateful to have received funding from so many kind Funders all named in our financial report, but to name a few Claire Milne Trust, Naonal Loery Community Fund, Postcode Loery Trust, Garfield Weston Foundaon, D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust, Leonard Laity Trust.

panel submission of a Reaching Communies fund for 4 years, hopefully to be received in September 2024, which would cover 65% of funds needed to deliver plans, many asked for in an online survey in November 2023, by parcipants, volunteers and also feedback from external agencies. All developments to bring HTT back into the wider community, and in the gardens and in outreach more informal training, workshops, to learn and share together with others. Also importantly to develop more ways of evaluaon, such as through the Trauma Informed Network, to be even beer informed of what works and what doesn’t work so well, so that everyone can learn and HTT can enhance the quality of its pracce.

“I feel at Home, what more can I say! It keeps me living” ( HTT Parcipant 60 yrs+ )

ages, not one parcular age bracket, is helpful. It is a community, a small community. Certain faces each week works well for me. A lot of people in the UK are feeling lonely. HTT is needed. It’s good you can join in at your own pace. The common ground of mental health is nice”. ( HTT Parcipant 20 yrs+ )

“The environment is certainly a place of fascinaon, educaon and sanctuary for me as I readjust to a new phase of life having recently rered from over thirty five years of teaching and consider opons for future contribuon and occupaon. I connue to love the opportunity to work with such a kind and enthusiasc team of staff and volunteers to develop our passion for helping parcipants with their mental well-being by connecng, learning, being acve and creave within a safe and beauful natural space. The values of respect, trust and equality are evidently upheld” … (new volunteer)

All of HTT look forward to another year of beer meeng needs and being inspired by each parcipant, who each grow HTT .

Horcultural Therapy Trust 2023-24 Accounts Statement

No. 1147927

Compared to the last two years HTT has ended the current year with a surplus of £16,712. However, this figure includes restricted funds of £22,480 from donaons from both the Postcode Loery Trust and the Naonal Loery Community Fund that are earmarked for the next financial year. So, in effect the charity has this year operated at a small loss.

‘Core’ income (direct parcipant payments) has connued to reduce and this year there has been no ‘other’ income (external paid acvies). This is partly due to changes is staffing. Subsequently, the emphasis is even more than in previous years on fundraising / grants / donaons. The success of this doesn’t always exactly align with the accounng period, so it means for the years 2024/25 more grants need to be secured (the good news is: they already have).

The expenses side has remained very stable, with a small reducon in wages paid this year (-4.5%) – the biggest HTT cost.

As menoned in all previous year reports, there is never room for complacency. So, from the above it should be clear that the connued securing of grants / donaons will need to be given ongoing priority next year.

Congratulaons to all on yet another successful HTT year.

*The Paypal donaon of £657.70 is from a collecon held aer the funeral of a parcipant.

Tonny Steenhagen - Bookkeeper/Treasurer
