Horcultural Therapy Trust (HTT)
Chair’s Annual Report
With contribuons from Deb Hoskin and Tonny Steenhagen
AGM, October 12th 2023
Another HTT year of many successes, while this year facing much change within HTT amongst the rise in mental health needs and cost of living crisis, affecng more people as the year has gone on, and stresses all charies face to keep going in the changing financial climate. HTT would like to greatly thank all its many funders, without whom we wouldn’t be able to benefit so many people so well as feedback shows us. HTT are grateful to be going into our 12[th] year and with some good strengths and learnings as we develop constantly to meet growing needs. In November 2022 HTT welcomed Martha Thorne as therapeuc gardening support worker staff to join project manager Deb Hoskin for the Wednesday and Thursday 'Gardening for Growth' sessions. With Dennis Trewin rering fully in Feb 2023. HTT would like to thank Dennis, co-founder of HTT with Deb Hoskin in July 2012, for ten years of genuine care and hard effort to cocreate HTT and keep HTT thriving. Over these years HTT will have supported around 500 parcipants of all ages and backgrounds. HTT celebrated its 11[th] year in July 2023.
'Gardening for Growth' has gone from strength to strength, and has connued again addionally on Fridays, with Shareen Smith as therapeuc gardening support worker staff alongside Deb Hoskin. This past 12 months it has supported 14 new parcipants, alongside the longer term 16 parcipants, as part of the growing community at HTT allotment garden haven. Totalling 30 parcipants, plus five new volunteers, alongside the two volunteers Kate and Sheila who've been with us since the beginning. Two volunteers have le to prepare for further educaon in occupaonal therapy, and as a support worker, others moved on into employment, each supported by HTT to develop as they have supported parcipants as garden therapy volunteer support. We as always are grateful to our volunteers and Trustees. Two long term trustees, our Chair John Maskall and Kate Parker, will be stepping down at the next AGM, and two new trustees are already looking to be of help with their parcular skills. HTT has been in transion this year with many changes , including increasing needs with mental health services overstretched, so we have all had to be creave while keeping our ethos at core , always listening to parcipants, the experts through experience , who are central to the HTT community, HTT being parcipant led.
HTT has become a point of crisis support more oen, working alongside many more organisaons such as Devon Mind, Gied Women, ODILS, all together thirteen organisaons newly, and very much sll a main signposted service by Social Prescribers. This has helped HTT to maintain and grow its grassroots service to

Plymouth and the wider community, for people of varied backgrounds and cultures to come together as a community in a safe social garden space and find recoveries and healing. With two staff daily now and at least one volunteer daily we are able to meet increased needs and facilitate improved wellbeing for more parcipants per session, as well as running the extra day. HTT know this also lessens the load on the NHS. HTT would like to greatly thank all our various funders throughout July 22 to July 23, without whom HTT would not be able to offer what it does in such benefit to so many.
The Hands to Soil-Project of Hope, running on Tuesdays weekly parcularly with asylum seekers and refugees, though any can join in the other HTT days if over 18, as have five parcipants. Tuesdays have supported 19 young people aged 16 to 19 years, from all over the world, e.g. Syria, Malaysia, Kuwait, Bangladesh, together and thirteen adults from Syria, Iran, Sudan, Afghanistan, Brazil. A total of 32 parcipants. Thank you to the Naonal Loery Community Fund for funding this project and towards Fridays. The staff member for this project is Angel, a refugee from El Salvador who was able to find full me employment following this role, which had been a step on the employment ladder, and has led to his independence here in the UK, while developing his skills and appreciang what he brought to sessions towards others and HTT. Another achievement in HTT’s aim to support reaching potenals and learning together across the whole team from parcipants to trustees. With this funding HTT were able to buy resources to collect an addional 6,500 litres of water and learn together towards care of soil; with healthier soil, core to life, and water saving, we were able to grow 3 mes as much food this year! Food was taken home by parcipants and plans for next year are to grow more food yet again, and create a cookery project with Keyham Green Places community centre (KGP), without pressure (as not beneficial to improved mental health) but with enthusiasm, learning and, sharing peer skills together. Excess food was shared with Provide Plymouth and KGP emergency food bank, through which parcipants have felt improved sense of worth and belonging through helping those in food poverty and in this cost of living crisis, and also receiving much needed healthy free food themselves. Also with due awareness to Climate Change resilience, all these ways are supporng much in consideraon to drought and flood, degradaon of soils, and also supporng mental health resilience by being able to make a difference and care for a small part of the Earth at HTT gardens. At HTT, wildlife, plants and trees are all part of the HTT community. Our session work constantly has a foundaon towards creaon of biodiverse areas and safeguarding local biodiversity. People, land and wildlife thriving together. It has been recognised by parcipants as a posive experience towards greater benefits for all sessions to have been at HTT over these four days weekly, contribung to the growing thriving community of HTT.
In May 2023 HTT also invited Blooming Well to garden an area of HTT a morning weekly, a project run by the Mustard Tree (NHS) supporng those who have cancer, and some have connued onto HTT. This will connue over the next HTT year. Also Improving Lives Plymouth connue their allotment project as part of HTT’s gardens again with parcipaon at HTT. This will connue over the next year. Total parcipaon this year has been 74 people. Including parcipants of Improving Lives Plymouth and Blooming Well, has been another 32 parcipants, bringing the total benefing from shared community at HTT to 106 parcipants.

2022-23 Accounts Statement
reduced by 10K compared to last year - while maintaining the same level of staffing /wages expense - the total income for the year has also been reduced by 11.5K. As a consequence, like last year, HTT has operated this year again at a deficit: 12.5K. This is mainly due to reduced grant/donaons income (-23.5%) but also core funding connues to gradually reduce and misc. income is slowly reducing too. Inevitably, this means the charity has had to rely more on its reserves. Despite this apparent 'loss' the balance sheet sll looks relavely healthy for a Charity of the size of HTT - see graphic below. As a Charity HTT doesn't have to generate profits for others like shareholders. Instead it can absorb 'losses' for a few years, as long as this doesn't affect the cash flow posion. As menoned in all previous reports, there is never room to become complacent. However, from the above it should be clear that securing grants/donaons will need to be given extra / connued priority next year. Congratulaons to all on another successful year.
Tonny Steenhagen - Bookkeeper/Treasurer
report informaon and all the staff's dedicated work in helping the people we work with, for Swi in helping to raise funds, to the trustees, volunteers and all involved with the running of the charity and its projects and especially to those we work with – Thank you!
A list of the grants received for this year and the accounts follow. We are very grateful for the funding received which has enabled us to connue our work and also provided sufficient funds carried forward to ensure we can connue into the next year.
from former years. The charity has seen considerable change this year with the rerement of one of its founder members, Dennis Trewin, who will be sadly missed. Nevertheless HTT connues to make a big difference in the lives of those we help.
Thank you to all of you for helping those in need.
