## **Adult mental health wellbeing improvement project**

This past year has been a very posive one for HTT with the numbers of parcipants remaining largely stac. Some who had stayed away during the pandemic have slowly returned and there have been some new people, many who have been signposted to us by the social prescribers throughout the city. There have also been a few that have aended as extra days to the refugee and Ukrainian projects that have been running separately on a Tuesday, promong community inclusion and belonging. This has been good for the regular, long-standing parcipants as they have been able to meet and socialise with a wider circle of people.

The weather has been very challenging with very high temperatures and strong sun but the Gazebos donated to us a few years ago by the Pearn Trust have proven to be very useful in giving the much needed shade. A woodworking shed made by another HTT project, 'Garden and grow together’, funded by the Awards for All, Naonal Loery Community Fund, has been proving popular as a secondary shelter for people to sit in. The plants were suffering from drought due to the lack of rainfall but we were able to keep them all alive. Most of the produce was taken by the parcipants and some surpluses given to local food banks, including HTT newly supporng Provide Plymouth's crisis work.

Two major projects needed to repair the infrastructure of the ageing site were successfully undertaken. Sue Kellam from Totnes had kindly donated a grant to allow us to replace the polytunnel skin which had been badly damaged by the local wildlife. We had assistance in pung on the skin from a neighbouring project Crop Gardens. A large net was put around it to protect it from jumping foxes and seagull feet.

Some of the nave trees that were being grown by parcipants in a small tree nursery have been transplanted with pride, with the Councils permission, along the new cycle track just outside the allotment area. They will make a welcome addion to the newly landscaped area which was a bit bare.

The wooden terraces were falling apart causing possible hazards around the site and the wood needed to be replaced. The Hobson Charity came to our rescue and pledged the funding for the terraced areas to be renewed and the soil/compost was funded to help to back fill. This should all last at least another 10 years.

Shareen was able to connue to be employed on Fridays on the allotment as a supervisor because we had the funding to do so. Hopefully this will be ongoing if we can get sufficient for the future. Shareen also volunteers one day a week along with Sheila and Kate (trustee) who also covers for sickness and holidays if

needed. HTT have three other volunteers, two of whom were signposted by the Jobcentre for our support, one of whom has now found employment .

The trustees decided that the work car should be sold close to its MOT as a driver in the coming year would not be there to make use of it. Instead it was agreed to use the funds from the sale for volunteer driver expenses to transport any parcipants that find it difficult to get to the project.

Finally. Dennis who has been with the Charity since its incepon gave 12 months noce as he is rering due to ill health. Not a decision that was taken lightly but inevitable due to the nature of his illness. He will also be stepping down as secretary at the next AGM.

## **Outreach garden maintenance project.**

This project was originally set up to take those parcipants who needed a bit more than just the allotment project to challenge them and involved working outside in the Community in sheltered housing and in a gated community, looking aer the flower beds . Sadly this had to come to an end in January due to the health problems of Dennis who was unable to carry out the work whilst on ambulatory oxygen. Up unl then it had been going well kindly supported by the voluntary work of Kate Parker (trustee). Everyone was sorry to see the project end but it was unavoidable. The parcipants have joined the Friday allotment core project.

## **Garden and Grow Together project**

This project managed by Deb Hoskin ran with gratude to the Awards for All, Naonal Loery Community grant, which funded both Tuesday and Fridays running costs as well as resources to build the Woodworking Shelter and woodworking tools. Also with wonderful support through funding for addional resources by the Royal Horcultural Society’s new Connecng Communies Fund. This project supported 63 parcipants in total, which was far more than its inial aims, and far surpassed the benefits aimed for, to such a degree that HTT have put applicaons through for 2022/23 and also hope to connue this worthwhile project in the long-term. The project was in two sessions weekly. Tuesdays supporng 16 to 19 year old asylum seekers and refugees, who were from various countries and cultures around the world, including Syria (Kurdish and Arabic), Iran, Thailand, Angola, Brazil, Kuwait, Eritrea, and Sudan. The need following Covid for this project had been recognised. There were 19 parcipants who all took part in building the Woodworking Shelter with the kind and much appreciated volunteering of Dan a skilled carpenter, through design and construcon. Dan also taught carpentry through each creang small personal pieces of woodwork. The young people all had opportunity to learn and develop skills in Woodwork as well as gardening, and three are going into College educaon to learn carpentry. City College Plymouth was crucial in signposng parcipants to us and supporng learning. Many were from rural backgrounds, so this quickly became a familiar safe space, and indeed for all brought joy and moments of peacefulness. Some came from areas where nearly all their own foods were grown in small local communies and so ideas, skills etc. were shared. The extreme temperatures and drought experienced brought learning to staff and consideraon to ways in which other cultures more used to such temperatures deal with this, as well as the

changing climate, we certainly all grew in knowledge together. Mostly this project supported belonging and social/friendship for those who had to flee their own homes and newly arrived in Plymouth. The project then took a turn in ways unplanned with the Ukrainian situaon arising and Ukrainians arriving in Plymouth, so ‘Welcome Garden’ sessions for adults and families were started at HTT on Tuesday evenings by staff who wanted to offer something, a safe, hopefully familiar garden space, to meet with other Ukrainians on arrival, some also were 16 to 19 year olds who joined in the young people’s project. This then developed into sessions being open to all the adult refugee community, through HTT having by now built good working relaonships with START (Students and Refugees Together) especially, and along with other agencies to signpost our way and vice versa towards greater benefit.

then newly welcoming and thanking Holly, who worked from June on this project on Tuesdays. Shareen runs sessions with Deb on a Friday, also with Kate’s kind volunteering.

Friday sessions are for adults who experience isolaon and although these sessions have always been inclusive, these sessions have been Brish parcipants in the main, but now started through the Tuesday project and growing connecons, to support more and more refugees and asylum seekers. Now the Wednesday and Thursday sessions also have begun to be aended by more parcipants from more varied backgrounds. The sense of belonging which is a foundaonal aspect of what HTT supports for those who experience isolaon and at mes sgma due to mental ill health, now supports this for more people oen newly arriving from worldwide, and everyone’s sense of community is widening.

somewhat but some expenses have gone up - see below. As a result HTT has operated this year at a deficit of just over 11K (or, more realiscally: 8K - see # below). This is roughly comparable to the years 2018/19 and 2019/20. However, during those years the balance sheet start posion was more posive. This year the balance sheet sll looks relavely healthy for a Charity of the size of HTT - see graphic below - and ended at 2015/16 level. Grants and donaons - about 37.5K - have dropped by 9.7% compared to last year. Core project income ( funded parcipants) has slightly decreased by 11.11% this year. At just under 6K this is sll fairly stable. 'Other income' has however increased by 24.4% to just over 2.5K. Compared to last year expenditure has increased by 21.2.9%. A few remarks: - Building materials expenses were just over 4K. This is because work has been done to stabilise the terraces. Most of these expenses is labelled as 'Hobson Trust'. The funds for these expenses were kindly received in the new tax year - on August 8th - in the form of a restricted Grant , so are not included in this financial year. This skews the overall result of this year by 3K. # - Wages were up by 4.5K. Some changes is staffing will happen next year. During the last year some extra part-me staff have been employed to prepare for this. As menoned in all previous reports, there is never room to become complacent; it is clear securing grants/donaons needs to be given extra priority next year. Congratulaons to all on another successful year.

report informaon and all the staff's dedicated work in helping the people we work with, for Swi in helping to raise funds, to the trustees, volunteers and all involved with the running of the charity and its projects and especially to those we work with – Thank you!

A list of the grants received for this year and the accounts follow. We are very grateful for the funding received which has enabled us to connue our work and also provided sufficient funds carried forward to ensure we can connue into the next year.

from former years despite another year of the COVID 19 epidemic. Although we are a small charity we make a big difference in the lives of those we help.

Thank you to all of you for helping those in need.
