## **Structure, governance and management** 

The Trust is governed by a Trust deed of 27th June 2012. 

The Trustees are made up of the Dean, Vice Dean and Canon Chancellor of Chester Cathedral together with up to two other people appointed by the Chapter of Chester Cathedral. 

The names of the present trustees are listed in the Trust information on page 2. 

## **Risk Management** 

The Trustees have considered the major risks to which the charity is exposed and have reviewed those risks and established a means of managing those risks.  The most significant risk identified is that of poor investment performance.  After a market review, the trustees have agreed to use the services of CCLA for its investments. 

## **Conflict of Interest Management** 

Whilst the Education Trust funds and/or considers funding the work of the Education Officer, The Dean, Very Revd Dr Tim Stratford, has removed himself from decision making meetings. The current Education Officer is married to the Dean. 

## **Objectives and activities** 

The Trust was set up for the advancement of education for the public benefit through: 

1. The provision of funding for the employment of an Education Officer at Chester Cathedral; 

2. Facilitating the use of Chester Cathedral as a site for learning and educational space; 

3. Promoting visits to Chester Cathedral for children and young people in order that they might explore the heritage of the building and its role in society through faith and spirituality; 

4. Supporting visits to Chester Cathedral by schools and other educational organisations through the provision of funds and organisational assistance; 

5. Advancing education for all by promoting the use of Chester Cathedral as an historic heritage site and sacred space and encouraging viewing of and interaction with associated works of art and historical significance. 

6. Ensuring accessibility to the Cathedral to all ages locally, nationally and internationally for the purposes of learning about the historical and social significance of Chester Cathedral. 

When planning the activities and grants for the year, the Trustees have considered the Commission's guidance on public benefit.  Chester Cathedral is free of charge to visit and is open 365 days each year.  Sharing its heritage and its daily life through lifelong learning is a core part of its mission statement. 

## **Statement of Trustees responsibilities** 

The trustees are responsible for preparing the Report of the Trustees and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice. 

The law applicable to charities in England and Wales, the Charities Act 2011, Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charity for that period.  In preparing those financial statements, the Trustees are required to 

- Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; 

- Observe the methods and principles in the Charity SORP; 

- Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; -  Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will 

continue in business. 

The Trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Report) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed.  They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

## **Achievements, performance and financial review** 

## **Income** 

Over the year of 2021 the Education Trust received a total income of £16,369.54 

Details can be seen on the Statement of Financial Activities from the accounts but notable income includes: 

·         £16180.04 from Lego related donations and brick sales 

·         £189.50 from Gift Aid claims 

## **Expenditure** 

£16.00 of direct costs were incurred in the year. 

£22.28 was incurred as bank charges. 

## **Investments** 

The Trust holds its capital investments with CCLA and is currently invested in the CofE Investment Fund. 

In 2021 the trustees agreed the accounts should reflect the more accurate "Mid" value of the shares, hence the gain in the accounts of £89,254.51 unrealised changes in investments 

## **Funds** 

The available funds can be broken down to: 

·         £0 of restricted funds 

·         £277,086 of unrestricted funds (including the unrealised increased value of investments) 

## **Challenges** 

As COVID restrictions began to ease finding new ways of reaching out to schools. This was possible with a new science and faith workshop that was in a pop-up tent at the start of July. 

By September schools were beginning to make bookings but to maintain some social distancing Pilgrim Days was restricted to 100 children per day and schools were kept as a school as much as possible. 

## **Opportunities** 

With the aid of grant funding from the cultural recovery fund and the award of a grant from Scientist’s in Congregations ECLAS a new science and faith workshop was developed allowing visits to a school in a pop-up tent. It was trialled in the summer term and by the Autumn Term was being delivered to up to 16 children in a 2-hour session (class of 30 two sessions in one day) with 4 sessions booked. 

Pilgrim Days was offered in October for year 5 and year 6 at a special price and was fully booked within a week of the advert going out. Two more days were added, and these booked up quickly. 560 children visited the cathedral for pilgrim days. Mixing of school groups was kept to a minimum to help prevent any spread of the virus. A new addition to the Pilgrim workshop was introduced this year as the children met St Werburgh. 

Canon Chancellor Award in 2020 had some entries and prizes were awarded to 3 classes. Their prize this year was a visit from Amazing Light. The workshop was adapted for year 3 and has been well received. One school would like it again next November. Several schools came on school visits, and we were able to deliver nativity on the move 3 times. 

Food for families – we have supported 12 families over the course of the year with a grant from the Welcome Network providing 2 meals to cook and at least 2 sandwich meals to create for each half term (on average there are 45 people who receive meals) In the summer holidays with help from a transforming lives grant we supplied larder boxes and at Christmas with help from transforming lives the Cathedral congregation and Tesco we supplied treat bags that contained Christmas treat food, a selection box for each child and a family game. The food is well received, and the family worker stresses that it really improves the outcomes for the children, and makes the families feel that there is someone that cares for them. 

We have maintained Bubbling Together as a monthly family service that now takes place at the same time as the 10.30 Eucharist. Holocaust Memorial Day took place in person this year although Lady Milena was not well enough to join us. 90 children came and watched the video we had made and then took part in two other workshops. 

These activities were made possible thanks to the grant from the Education Trust to Chester Cathedral in 2020.
