Achlevement and performance
Charltable actlvltle5
2023 was another exceptional year of growth with Income Increaslng by 63% from the previous year. We
supwted approximately 135 members in 2023. The day Service delivered around 257 days of suptKJrt per
week lapprox. Bo,(￿ hours of support over the yearl with the Outreach delivering 31,500 hours of support
includin4 deliverinq over 100 weekend and evenlng activity 5ession5. We continue to fKus all our efforts
providing our Member5 With opportunltles to create new skllls and opportunities by prowding quallty
and varied sessions across the week. Member5 contlnue to be at the forefront of any strategic decisions
made, wlth a weekly Members Voice session contrlbuting to informing the l+lanagement Team of tx)th
positive and negatiye aspects of hlagpies, as well as ideas for future 5es51¢)ns. A cohort of Members has
also worked closely with other Learnlng Dlsability charitie5 in Calderdale to ensure the voices of Adults
with Leaming Disabilitie5 are heard when Strategic decision5 are b￿n made wthin Calderdale.
This level of growlh meant a need to continue to recruit new staff, In April 2024 we recnjlted a new
Accounts Manager, and In September 2024 recruited a new HR Manager. These new roles were developed
to support the core operatlon of the 5eMce. In November 2023 we also developed a new Deputy Chief
Executive Officer role to support the Chief Executive Officer. We also slrengthene(I the staff support,
recruiting 2 new Supervisors to increase the support for our Enablers. Towards the tatter stages of 2023
was partlcularly dlfficult as we looked to recruit a new Operations Manager. but are pleased that we were
able to recrtht to thls roie in early 2024.
The Trustees have identified the principal risk facing the charity is the current premises, which we are
now at the point of maximum occupancy. A5 part of our ongoing effort to flnd a new buil(iing/ property to
purchase for the charityj in December 2023 we found a potentially viable suitable location but
nfortunateiy were unable to get the deal across the line. The Trustees continue to priorit15e the
purchase of either land or a suitable buildlng to convert ané recognlse the dlfficultle5 the current
marketplace presents.
In June 2023 we decided to increase our fleet of Vehicles to support the tran5POrtation and opportunities
for our Members, placing an order for two new Minibuslvans due in Summer 2024 and an additional car
purchased in October 2024.
In February 2024 we said goodbye to our Chief Executlve Offlcer, Amanda Gouldln8, and we would like to
place on record our slncere thanks for all the support and effort that She provided Magpies in her
seven.year tenure,. steering the charity through a rebrand and in a new strategic direction, as well as
through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Finandal review
Flnandal posltion
The net income for the year was £231.744, including a net income of £232,213 on unrestricted funds and
net expenditure of £5,321 on restrlcted funds after transfers.
The primary funding source cc*nes from Members pawng directly and through both the Local Authorfty and
Health Servi￿, to access the Day servi￿ and Outreach Service at Magpies. Magpies a150 undertakes soffle
small fundralslng events during the year. such a5 ￿ Halrfax Gala. these are prirnarily used to promote
Ma¥pies.
All Incoming resources to Magpies are used to support and deliver Services to our Mernber5. The primary
expenditure of Magples Is Staffing to support our members. Our 'Enablers' SLtpport Members to access
sessions that allow them to leam new skills, have new opportunities and develop and malntain friendship5
wfjthin the day centre as well as accesslng the communlty In Outreach.
In early 2023, the Trustees recognised the need to ensure that the reseNes belng held were s£￿eratin9 a
retum for Magpies. The Trustee5 agreed to move the majority of our reserves to Flagstone, a Charity
Deposit Platform. giving easy access to multiple sawn8s accounts, Wbth all deposits being placed under an
agreed rlsk framv*¥ork.
A5 we enter a period of consolldation and we continue to prforltlse the quality of the servlce for our
Members. we estlmate Ehat our Income will remain stable over the next couple of years. but that costs wlll
naturally increase due to external factors such as inflation. While we don'l estimate this to have a
negative effect on Magpies reserves the trustees will continue to closely monitor the 5ltuation.
Reserves policy
Magpies keep between 3 and 6 months of running costs as reserves to enable the smooth runnlng of the
charity. Magples have seen significant gr0￿h again durlng 2023. Runninq cost5 have therefore been
Increased to cover this.
Magpies continue to look for appropriate premise511and to buy. Flndini appropriate premises has proved
extrernely dlfflcult over the past few years. We hope to find something durini 2024. Designated building
funds remain at £750k.
The charitys free re5erve5, eX￿￿lIng flxed assets, at the year end were £1,328,942. After deducting
designated funds this leaves £578,942.
Future plans
As we enter a period of consolidation, haYln8 grown significantly in the past two years, the quality of our
Service remalns the priorityj Wlth thls, we continue to monitor the number of members, considering their
individual needs and how the seNlce meets their needs.
We also contlnue to concerbtrate our efforts on finding the rtght property to purchase. with the trustees
and mana8ernent tearn leading the search and remaining proactlve in a difficult marf(etplace.
Training and development for all staff is also a priority, upskSlllng the team to meet the needs of both
current and potential new Member5.

REPORT OF THE INDEPENDENT AUDITORS TO THE MEMBERS OF

Our responslbllftles for the audlt of the flnanclal statements
Our objedlves are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financfal statements as a whole are
free from material misstatement. whether due to fraud or error, and to 15sue a RepLYt of the Independent
Auditors that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a hlih level of assurance, but is not a
guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance wfth ISAS IUKI wll alway5 detect a material

individually or In the aegreeate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the econ¢)mic deci5ion5 of
users taken on the basis of these financial statements.
The extent to whlch our procedures are capable of detecting I￿e¥ular1t7es, including fra￿ is detailed
below:
Our approach to identifwn8 and assessing the rlsk of material mlsstatement in respect of Irreguladtles,
Induding fraud and non-compliance wlth law5 and regulations. was as follows:
the engagement partner ensured that the engagement team collectlvdy had the appropriate
competence, capabilities and skills to identify or recognise non-tompllance vrtth appllcabie Law5 and
reeulatlon5'
we identlfied the Laws antl regulatlons applicable to the company through dicussions wth directors arKI
other management, and form our commerdal knowledge and experien￿ of the sector"
we focussed on specific laws and regulatlons which considered may have a dlrect materlal effect on the
financial statements or the operatlons of the company* including the Companie5 Act 2006, taxation
legislation, data protection, anti-bribery. employment, environmental and health and safety legislation.
we assessed the extent of compliance with the laws and regulations identified above through making
enquiries of management and Inspectlng le8al corre5pondence- and
identlfled law5 and regulations were communicated within the aL￿7t team regularly and the team
remained alert to instances of non-compliance throughout the audit.
We assessed the susceptibility of the crmpanys finandal statements to material mT55tatemLYt, Including
obtaining an understanding of how fraud might occur, by..
rnakine enquirles of management as to where they considered there was a susceptibility to fraud. their
knowledge of actual, 5U5pected and alleged fraud. and
considering the Intemal controls in place to mltlgate rlsks of fraud and non-compliance with laws and
uLations.
To addre55 the risk of fraud through rnanagement bias and overide of C￿trOl5, we:
performed analytlcal procedures to identify any unusual or unexpected relationships>
tested joumal entries to identify unusual transactlons:
assessed whether judgernent5 and assumptions made in deterrTrining the accounting estimate5 set out in
rK)te 2 and where indicative of potential bias. and
inve5tigaled the rationale behind significant or unusual transactlons.
In response to the risk of irregularities and non-compliance wlth laws and regulations, we designed
procedures which Induded, tr4Jt were not limited to:
agreeing finandal statement disc105ures to underlylng supportin8 documentation;
reading the mlnutes of meeting5 of those charged wlth governance.
enquiring of management a5 to artual and potential litigation and claim5. and
reviewing correspondence ￿th HMRC, relevant ￿UlatorS including the Health and Safety Executive, and
the companys legal advisors.
There are inherent lirnltatlons in our audit Pr￿edureS described above. The more removed that law5 and
regulations are from finarrial transactions, the les5 likely it is that we would become awa￿ of
non-compliance. Auditing standards also limit the audlt procedures required to identify non.compliance
with laws and regulation5 to enquiry of the dirertors and other management and the i￿PectIon of
regulat(ry and legal COrre5Pt￿denCe. if any.
