## _**About Kol Bonaich**_

**Kol Bonaich** is dedicated to supporting vulnerable, disadvantaged, and marginalised young people who face significant barriers to achieving their full potential. Founded on the belief that every young person possesses unique strengths and talents, we work to ensure that those experiencing adversity are given the opportunity, support, and encouragement needed to build brighter futures.

At Kol Bonaich, we recognise that many young people require more than practical assistance alone. Through **trusted relationships** , **mentoring** , **wellbeing support** , **sports** and **recreational activities** , **youth clubs** , **educational opportunities** , and **community engagement programmes** , we provide safe and inclusive spaces where young people can develop confidence, resilience, life skills, and a sense of belonging.

Our approach is rooted in early intervention, prevention, and empowerment. We work alongside young people to help them overcome challenges, strengthen their wellbeing, reconnect with positive opportunities, and realise their aspirations. By providing **consistent support** and **positive role models** , we help young people develop the skills, confidence, and resilience needed to navigate life's challenges and make successful transitions into adulthood.

Operating primarily across **Hackney** and **Haringey** , we support young people aged 12– 21 who are affected by poverty, **adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)** , family breakdown, trauma, social exclusion, poor mental health, homelessness, exploitation, violence, and disengagement from education, employment, or training. We also provide targeted support for neurodiverse young people, including those with ADHD, autism, and additional learning needs, who are often underserved by traditional services and face increased risks of exclusion and long-term disadvantage.

Throughout the year, Kol Bonaich has remained committed to its mission of ensuring that **no young person faces their challenges alone** . Supported by more than 150 dedicated volunteers alongside our staff, donors, and community partners, we continue to create opportunities for young people to thrive, contribute positively to their communities, and build hopeful, fulfilling futures.

_We believe every young person is an "_ _**uncut diamond** " with the potential to shine. Our role is to help uncover that potential and provide the support needed for it to flourish._

## _**Message from Our Trustees**_

By offering personalised support, positive role models, and structured opportunities, we help young people develop essential life skills, emotional resilience, and the confidence needed to move forward positively in their lives.

At **Kol Bonaich** , we remain deeply committed to supporting vulnerable and at-risk young people, particularly those who are **NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training)** , by providing a safe, welcoming, and nonjudgmental environment where they can find stability, support, and hope. We recognise that many of the young people we work with are facing complex challenges, including poverty, trauma, family breakdown, mental health difficulties, neurodiversity, social exclusion, homelessness, and exposure to violence or exploitation.

We are proud of the **safe and nurturing environment** we have built, where young people are respected, listened to, and supported without judgment. Our approach is rooted in dignity, consistency, and care, ensuring that each young person is seen and valued as an individual with potential.

Our service offers more than immediate support; it provides a consistent and trusted space where young people can pause, reflect, and begin to rebuild confidence in themselves and their future. Through our informal, youth-friendly approach, we create a sense of belonging for those who often feel isolated or marginalised, helping them to reconnect with positive influences and supportive relationships.

We extend our sincere gratitude to our donors, volunteers, staff, and partners whose ongoing commitment makes this work possible. Their support enables us to continue delivering life-changing services and to expand opportunities for young people who need them most.

Together, we are **creating pathways to stability, hope, and opportunity** —helping young people not only to overcome their current challenges but to build brighter, more secure futures where they can truly thrive.

Central to our work is our mentoring programme, which plays a vital role in guiding young people back into education, training, employment, or meaningful community engagement.

## _**The At-Risk Young People We Support**_

Kol Bonaich works with young people who are facing some of the most complex and challenging circumstances in society. Many of the individuals we support are experiencing **poverty** , **trauma** , **school exclusion** , **family breakdown** , **unstable** or **unsafe home environments** , and significant **emotional and psychological distress** . A large proportion have been impacted by **Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)** , which can have longlasting effects on wellbeing, development, and future opportunities.

We also support young people who are **NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training)** , who are particularly vulnerable to social exclusion, isolation, and reduced access to services. These circumstances can contribute to heightened anxiety, low self-esteem, and increased mental health difficulties.

Many of the young people we work with are also affected by **neurodiversity** , **learning difficulties** , or **behavioural challenges** , which can make it harder for them to thrive in traditional educational settings. Without tailored support, they are at greater risk of disengagement and long-term disadvantage.

Young people who have experienced trauma— whether physical, emotional, or psychological— are often at increased risk of poor mental health, disengagement from education, and involvement in risky behaviours. Without appropriate support, these challenges can escalate, affecting their ability to form positive relationships, maintain stability, and access opportunities.

In some cases, vulnerable young people may be exposed to homelessness, exploitation, violence, criminal activity, or substance misuse. Others may experience intense emotional distress, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, requiring urgent and consistent support.

_Kol Bonaich exists to provide ea_ ~~_rly_~~ _intervention, stability, and trusted relationships for these young people. Through safe spaces, mentoring, structured activities, and holistic support, we help reduce risk factors and build protective factors that promote resilience, wellbeing, and positive long-term outcomes._

_**Our Programs**_

## _**Kol Bonaich Shabbos Programme**_

For almost thirty years, **Reb Osher Schapiro** has opened his home every Shabbos to vulnerable children and young people, creating a warm, welcoming, and non-judgemental environment where they can experience the joy, dignity, and stability of Shabbos. What begins with a shared meal often becomes the first step in transforming a young person's life.

Support is responsive to individual needs and aims to improve resilience, wellbeing, and longterm outcomes.

For many participants, the Shabbos programme provides an important source of stability and belonging. It offers a consistent, positive environment where they feel valued, respected, and connected to a supportive community. The relationships formed through the programme often continue throughout the week, enabling sustained engagement with the charity's wider services.

Many of the young people who attend are experiencing significant challenges, including family breakdown, social isolation, poor mental wellbeing, educational disengagement, financial hardship, and emotional trauma. Many are reluctant to engage with formal support services or have lost trust in adults and institutions. **The Shabbos programme provides a unique and trusted point of engagement** .

Over the past three decades, Reb Osher Schapiro and the dedicated Kol Bonaich team have welcomed hundreds, and likely thousands, of vulnerable young people from **Stamford Hill** , **Golders Green** , and **Jewish communities across the United Kingdom** . The Shabbos programme continues to play a central role in Kol Bonaich's model of support, providing an accessible and trusted gateway through which young people can engage with the charity and receive holistic, person-centred support that promotes positive and lasting change.

At Kol Bonaich, Shabbos meals are far more than a source of nourishment. **They provide a safe, inclusive environment** where young people are welcomed without judgement and encouraged to build meaningful relationships. Through the consistency and warmth of these weekly gatherings, trust develops naturally, enabling staff and volunteers to gain a deeper understanding of each young person's circumstances and support needs.

These trusted relationships provide the foundation for Kol Bonaich's wider wraparound support. Once engaged, young people are able to access tailored interventions, including mentoring, emotional wellbeing support, crisis intervention, advocacy, educational guidance, employment advice, family mediation, practical assistance, and referrals to specialist services where appropriate.

## _**Impact Stories**_

_These stories reflect the lived experiences of young people whose lives have been positively transformed through the care, guidance, and consistent support of Kol Bonaich._

_“When I first came to Kol Bonaich, I was struggling with anxiety, felt completely disconnected, and had no clear direction in life. I didn’t believe things could change for me. Through consistent support, mentoring, and being part of a safe environment, I slowly began to rebuild my confidence. I learned how to manage my emotions better and started to focus on my goals. Today, I am looking into further education and feel hopeful about my future for the first time in years.”_

- David, age 19

_“Our son was going through a very difficult period, including substance misuse and severe emotional distress. As a family, we felt lost and didn’t know where to turn. Kol Bonaich provided immediate care, structure, and ongoing support that made a real difference. With their guidance, Michael began engaging with positive routines and therapeutic support. He is now progressing in his studies and rebuilding his life. The transformation has been incredible for him and for our whole family.”_

- Michael (supported by family)

_“I used to feel like I didn’t fit in anywhere and was always getting into trouble at school. I felt misunderstood and angry most of the time. At Kol Bonaich, I was treated with respect and given space to talk and be heard. The staff helped me manage my behaviour and encouraged me to join activities like sports and group sessions. Now I feel more confident, I’m making better choices, and I actually feel like I have a future.”_

Yusuf, age 16

## _**Our Plans for the Future**_

_Kol Bonaich is committed to continuously developing innovative, therapeutic, and engaging programmes that support the emotional wellbeing, personal development, and long-term resilience of vulnerable young people._

_As part of our plans, we aim to expand creative and therapeutic interventions that provide young people with new and accessible ways to process emotions, build confidence, and strengthen mental health._

## **Music Therapy**

Music therapy offers a powerful and creative outlet for young people to explore emotions, improve selfawareness, and develop healthy coping strategies. Through listening, singing, songwriting, or playing instruments, young people are able to express feelings that may be difficult to verbalise. This approach supports emotional regulation, reduces anxiety, improves mood, and enhances communication and social skills. It also provides a safe, non-judgemental environment where trust can be built, relationships strengthened, and self-esteem improved, particularly for those affected by trauma or instability.

## **Dance and Movement Activities**

Dance and structured movement sessions provide a positive and expressive outlet for stress relief, emotional release, and self-discovery. These activities help young people develop confidence, discipline, coordination, and a sense of achievement. They also promote teamwork, social connection, and physical wellbeing. By participating in a supportive and inclusive environment, young people are encouraged to build identity, resilience, and positive relationships, while reducing isolation and disengagement.

## _**Our Plans for the Future**_

## **Swimming Activities**

Swimming offers significant benefits for young people at risk by supporting physical health, mental wellbeing, and self-discipline within a safe and structured setting. The calming nature of water helps reduce stress and anxiety while promoting relaxation and emotional balance. As young people learn and develop new skills, swimming builds confidence, focus, and perseverance, encouraging goal-setting and a sense of achievement. Group swimming sessions also help reduce isolation and foster positive peer relationships, creating a sense of belonging and shared progress.

## **Sports Activities**

Sports provide a powerful platform for young people to develop structure, discipline, and healthy outlets for energy and emotion. Participation in team and individual sports promotes physical fitness, mental wellbeing, teamwork, leadership, and resilience. Sports also encourage goal-setting, time management, and perseverance, all of which support success in education and wider life outcomes. For many young people, sports create a strong sense of belonging and connection with peers and mentors, helping to build confidence and reduce engagement in negative behaviours.

## **Gardening**

Gardening offers a calming, hands-on activity that supports emotional wellbeing, patience, and responsibility. It helps reduce stress and anxiety while encouraging young people to connect with nature and experience the satisfaction of nurturing growth. Gardening also develops practical life skills such as planning, teamwork, and problemsolving, particularly in group or community settings. For vulnerable young people, it provides a structured and therapeutic environment where they can build confidence, gain purpose, and engage in meaningful, restorative experiences that support both mental and emotional health.

_Through these planned activities, Kol Bonaich aims to continue delivering holistic, engaging, and therapeutic opportunities that support young people to thrive and build positive futures._
