TWICKENHAM RIVERSIDE TRUST YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2025

TRUSTEES' REPORT (INCLUDING DIRECTORS' REPORT) FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2025

The trustees present their report and financial statements for the year ended 30 September 2025.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the financial statements and comply with the Trust's governing document, the Companies Act 2006 and “Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)” (as amended for accounting periods commencing from 1 January 2016).

Objectives and activities

The Trust's Objects are to preserve, protect and improve for the benefit of the public the riverside and its environs at Twickenham in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and such other areas as the Trustees may from time to time decide; to provide charitable facilities there for public recreation and community activities; and to advance the education of the public in the history and environment of the area.

The trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the Trust should undertake.

Achievements and performance

L J Montgomery-Smith resigned as a Trustee on 30 April 2025

M Brownrigg resigned as a Trustee on 17 June 2025

A Donnelly was appointed Chair on 17 June 2025

At the end of last reporting year, in September 2024, the Trust’s demise within the Diamond Jubilee Gardens vested in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, ending the Trust’s lease which had been due to expire in 2139.

The Gardens subsequently closed to the public in Spring 2025, Cafe Sunshine having closed in December 2024, and exploratory construction work commenced soon after.

The Trust’s event delivery equipment had previously been stored in a container alongside Diamond Jubilee Gardens. With the closure of the Gardens, this was no longer available. Richmond Council kindly agreed to store the equipment underneath its Civic Centre in central Twickenham, where it has been readily accessible to the various groups who have made use of it since it was moved there.

TWICKENHAM RIVERSIDE TRUST YEAR ENDED 30 SEPTEMBER 2025

• COMPULSORY PURCHASE ORDER COMPENSATION

The Trust continued to negotiate with the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames regarding

compensation for the loss of its lease. In January 2025, an interim compensation payment was received. Out of these funds, an interim payment (as shown under “Other Income” in the financial statement below) was made to the Trust’s surveyor, who continued to advise trustees regarding compensation. Final agreement was reached soon after the end of this reporting year.

• TWICKENHAM BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT (BID)

The Trust’s event-delivery partnership with the Twickenham BID continued in spite of the Gardens no longer being available for events.

The Trust also continued to lend its gazebos, tables and other event delivery infrastructure to the BID, as well as other local organisations and groups.

• TOTALLY THAMES FESTIVAL 2025

The Trust took part in this month-long, London-wide festival, organised by the Thames Festival Trust, with three days (Friday-Sunday) of boat trips at the end of September, leaving from Twickenham Embankment and doing a roundtrip to Richmond.

Ahead of the event, several trustees and volunteers completed a two-day RYA training course (Powerboat Level 2). The event was also delivered with the supervision of an experienced waterman.

There was very positive feedback from participants, and the Trust will be liaising with various bodies to explore how this activity can be expanded.

• PRESENTATIONS

Just under £400 was raised from delivering Thames-related talks to various local groups, and the Trust is looking to expand this educational activity.

• FINANCIAL REVIEW

The expenses to which the Trust is committed on an annual basis are minimal and so the Board of Trustees are still of the opinion that the financial position of the Trust is secure now and for the foreseeable future.

The Trust does not have a reserves policy, but the Trustees are of the opinion that the current level of reserves are sufficient such that in the event of a significant drop in funding, they will be able to continue the Trust’s current activities while consideration is given to ways in which additional funds may be raised.

The trustees have assessed the major risks to which the Trust is exposed, and are satisfied that systems are in place to mitigate exposure to the major risks.
