Annual Report of the Trust Fund of the Holy Trinity Armenian Church Manchester for the year 2020

History

The Armenian Church of the Holy Trinity was opened on Easter Sunday 1870 by the relatively small but prosperous Armenian community in Manchester. The church is thought to be the first purpose built Armenian Church in Western Europe. A trust was set up in 1909 to hold the title to the land and buildings and aseparate trust was set up in 1930 to hold and manage financial assets. The two trusts were merged in 2000 and brought up to date with current charity law.

Purpose of the Trust Fund

The purpose of the Trust Fund as currently constituted is to

  1. Hold in trust the land and church buildings at 229 Upper Brook Street, Manchester.

  2. Hold and manage donated funds to produce an income for the management of the church and community in Manchester.

  3. Use the income from invested funds to support the expenses of maintaining the church property in a good state of repair, pay the salaries of church officials and the expenses of maintaining divine service in the church.

  4. Where needed to effect major repairs or extension to the church premises.

Activities in 2018

The Trust Fund continued to pay the utility bills and salary of the Deacon. A number of safety improvements have been made at the request of our

insurers and safety policies introduced.

We have continued to use the services of CCLA for the management of our investments. The income generated from the investments has remained stable. The value of the Trust Fund remained above £1m in spite a modest fall in stock market values. The rise in subscribing members was sustained.

The income from the Trust Fund supports more than 80% of the operating costs of the church. There was a small financial surplus this year .

Residual minor works required for the completion of refurbishment of the basement were completed.

Diocesan Affairs

Due to the corona virus restrictions there were no meetings held.

150th Anniversary of the opening of the church.

In order to plan a programme of events to celebrate the 150 years of continuous operation of the church a subcommittee was set up with volunteers from the trustees and church wardens.

Most activities planned did not take place due to corona virus restrictions. The principal events agreed upon were

  1. A special church service on the 3rd May. A marquee had been arranged to take the expected overspill from the church and the service will be relayed there. This did not take place

The celebratory dinner at the Ramada hotel with invited guests from Manchester religious communities did not take place. It was postponed to May 2021 and again postponed to May 2022. Over 120 members of the community paid to attend the dinner and only a few have asked for refunds.

  1. Digitisation of the church records of baptisms, marriages and funerals with arrangements for a copy to be lodged in a Manchester archive. This was done.

  2. A concert of Armenian music and dance to be held at the Royal Northern college of music featuring the Akhtamar dance company from London. This was postponed to a date to be agreed.

  3. An Armenian food festival to be held at the Didsbury Library. Also postponed.

  4. Refurbishment of gravestones in the Manchester Southern Cemetary. The ChurchTrustees have agreed to fund the cost of the clergy gravestones. This project was completed.

  5. The production of a book on the history of the church in Manchester.

Divine worship.

There were no public services held from March 2020 to Easter 2021 when an Easter service was held with a limited number of participants compatible with government guidelines. Our Deacon Artur conducted online services each Sunday during the closure.
