MINUTES

• 1) Welcome. Apologies: Geraint Harris, David Greensmith, Sam Sutcliffe. Present: Jon Sayer (District Commissioner), Keith Rawnsley, Kath Ball, Scott Trickett, Sophie Foster, Julie Harris, Eleanor Dale, David McMurdo, Andy Warren, Phil Grice, Alix Bullock, Andy Rainforth, Oscar Chatwin, Sheena Campbell, son + husband.

• 2) Minutes: The minutes of the 2023 AGM have been made available via email and to save time will be taken as read and approved unless any objection is raised. Approved

Chairman’s report (Scott Trickett) I would like to thank all for coming today to the AGM of Mytholmroyd Scout Group.

I would also like to thank and formally welcome our District Commissioner, Jon Sayer. It is very important to emphasise the commitment of our Leaders and Volunteers who help our young people. On behalf of all parents and carers I would like to convey my personal thanks to the unbelievable team of dedicated leaders and parent helpers who consistently give up their time and money to help Mytholmroyd Scouts. I have been involved with this group for over 18 years now and it never ceases to amaze me the long-term commitment of our leaders, some have dedicated 10, 20, 30 or even 40+ years to supporting the young people of our area. They have enriched literally thousands of lives over the years. To say I am proud is an understatement. It is a real honour to do my part alongside them all. Please remember our leaders are all volunteers and I cannot express enough my gratitude of their dedication to ensure our Scouts have continued experiences in a safe environment.

We are actively seeking new leaders and volunteers this year again so please get in touch with any one of us if you are interested in helping. Our relationship with the community centre continues to be very strong. It is very important we maintain good relations with them and have active participation in decisions they make which ultimately affect us. There are many developments going on in the centre, both internally and with the car park. We work very closely with them to ensure the best for the centre and Scouts.

We raised over £20,000 this year, a massive thank you to all involved. Events included: Mytholmroyd tidy up, £600. Fell Race and Duck race nearly £1000. Christmas tree collection nearly £1000. We received a large donation from the recently disbanded Masonic Lodge, Hebden Bridge. This demonstrates how highly we are thought of in the community and I am proud that people support the advancement of our young people. We have bought many new items of equipment to help the running of our group.

Our activities include; Brow Hike, Patrol Camp, Scouts and Dads and Summer Camp happening in mid-July

All Scouts / Explorers / Beavers and Cubs have progressed well and are to be congratulated on moving upwards in Scouting – this is great for our young people’s development. I would like to call out one special award; Thomas Backhouse, saved a life in Hebden Bridge using lifesaving skills learned about 2 weeks before the incident. He was in Hebden Bridge when a man collapsed following a recent heart operation. Tom conducted lifesaving CPR on this person and undoubtedly saved this man’s life. Tom should be immensely proud, we certainly are.

Thank you again to parents, volunteers and Leaders who have helped deliver Scouting experience for the young people in our area.

• 3) Group Report (Keith Rawnsley): The Group is still feeling the impact of the disruption caused by the Covid epidemic, particularly a “gap” in practical and social skills. Most sections are full now, we have no plans to expand. Initial and Refresher Leader Training is ongoing, The Group wish to formally thank the former Hebden Bridge Masonic Lodge for their generous donation. Our main fundraiser is the Christmas tree collection, hard work but worthwhile. An international trip to Slovenia is planned for 2025; this requires a great deal of administration, particularly risk assessments.

• 4) Section Reports: Beavers (Sophie Foster): Currently 17 Beavers, 15 invested. Badgework includes Communications, Fitness, Money Skills and Challenge badges. One overnight stay at Hebden Hey and a Halloween party at Blake Dean

Cubs (Julie Harris): 21 Cubs, 2 moving to Scouts at end of term. Life has been made much easier by the arrival of 2 uniformed assistant leaders (Team members), George Kidd and Phil Grice. They are working through their training, and we share the planning. Oscar Chatwin attends every week to run games and activities. Jacob and Gabriel have also helped. Cubs will need another Explorer volunteer next term to replace those going to university. Our ‘occasional helpers’ – Alan, Scott, Sandrine, Eleanor and Lorraine continue to be brilliant, each helping out once every 5 weeks. Having that extra pair of eyes and hands means that we can see and sort any inappropriate behaviour more easily. We have worked towards various activity badges and all the challenge badges. We have awarded 2 Chief Scout Silver Awards. Our program is planned to help the older cubs work towards getting the silver award but they do need to show a level of commitment. If a few pack nights are missed or a camp not attended it is difficult to achieve all that is needed. We have had 2 camps; in February most Cubs attended Hebden Hey Scout Hostel for a weekend and were joined on the 2[nd] night by the Beavers. In June (21st-23rd) 13 Cubs were ‘under canvas’ in our pop-up tents at Whitley Beaumont Scout Camp, Huddersfield. Thanks to Phil, Oscar, Sam S, Gabriel, Ryan and Alan who helped for the whole weekend and to Sandrine and Lorraine on Sunday. We are planning another camp at Blake Dean in the Autumn. Next year I hope to be able to share more of the administration with others after more training in OSM and the Scout Associations new digital platform.

Scouts (Keith Rawnsley): 30 Scouts, 8 moving to Explorers. 3 Scouts have achieved the Chief Scout Gold Award. Some Scouts have found the awards challenging. Have held Patrol Leaders camp at Blake Dean. Participated in Brow Hike, one Scout won the “most helpful Scout” award. Our team won the Nighthawk challenge. The whole troop has gained the Swimmers badge, this allows more participation in activities.

Explorers (Keith Rawnsley): Started with a small number, has improved over the year. The Explorers lack a permanent leader, no one can commit to every week. Christmas party at Blake Dean. The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Gold award expeditions are in September and end of August.

• 5) Treasurer’s Report (David Mc Murdo): Paper copies of the accounts were distributed at the meeting; a digital copy is available. Scott Trickett proposed that the accounts be approved, Keith Rawnsley seconded, all attendees in favour.

• 6) Appointment of Officers (proposer and seconder). Chairman: Scott Trickett (D McM + ED). Treasurer: David McMurdo (ST + KB). Secretary: Eleanor Dale (ST + JH). Subscription Secretary: Kath Ball (ST + SF).

• Representatives for each section: Beavers, Cubs: Alix Bullock, Scouts, Explorers Fundraising representative, Quartermaster, Safety Representative Committee Members: Andy Rainforth

• 7) Any other Business: The Trustees would like to appoint an Assistant Subscription Secretary to assist Kath Ball – no volunteer so far. Alix Bullock raised a query regarding safeguarding risks from the use of “smartphones”. The Group needs a written policy - will add to the agenda of September’s Trustee meeting. Keith Rawnsley outlined the Photography policy. The Group prefer that phones are not brought to camp as (i) to avoid homesickness (ii) they are difficult to charge (iii) reduces unsupervised photography. Andy Rainforth discussed creating a phone and data policy. The District Commissioner, Jon Sayer addressed the meeting and thanked all the leaders and volunteers.

The Chairman (ST) closed the meeting at 7.45pm.
