Friends of Thorngrove
Trustee’s Report 2022-2023
As declared in our Charities Commission status, Friends of Thorngrove Charity is focused on the following :
-
Raising money for the items that can be donated to Thorngrove School for the educational enhancement of the pupils
-
Raising monies for nominated national and local charities
-
Acting as a focal point for social events that will foster a community spirit with parents, teachers and pupils
Financial Donations to Thorngrove
In the financial year, 1[st] April 2022 – 31[st] March 2023, we made a £15000 donation to the school towards the King Studio. This was from funds carried forward from the previous 2 years and in conversation and agreement with the Headteacher at the time, Adam King. The studio has provided a much needed additional room at the school and is used for ballet, Lamda, open mornings and match teas.
Financial Donations to other charities
In consultation with the School Council, we have also made the following donations:
£147 to Guide Dogs
£1781 to I Can and I Am
These charities are chosen by the children, often after visiting speakers have come to present at school.
Fundraising
It has been lovely to be fully up and running after the COVID restrictions of the previous 2 years. Please see below for a summary of this year’s events.
– Summer Extravaganza June 2022
This event was run in conjunction with Adam King’s leaving tea. There was a silent auction, plus the usual tombola stalls, face painting and traditional fair games.
The event raised £2372
– Netball Tournament September 2022
We held the popular netball tournament at the start of term, which was a wonderful opportunity to play some competitive netball and have a catch up after the summer.
Thank you to Mrs Thomas for organising.
The event raised £152
- Pet Care Enrichment December 2022
The enrichment pet care group decided to fund raise to support their charities of choice: Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary £150 and the Cats Protection League £179.
’ – Present Room and Santa s Grotto December 2022
We ran the popular present room and grotto alongside FOT Christmas drinks in the New Hall. Gifts were chosen and wrapped by a wonderful team of helpers and Santa and his elves, greeted our younger children. £665 was raised on the
evening and paid directly to the school’s Just Giving page for the Brain Tumour Charity.
– Ski Sale January 2023
In light of the first school ski trip since 2018, the FOT organised a ski sale which raised £162. In addition, the left over clothes were donated to the Syrian and Turkish Earthquake Disaster Charity.
– Burns Night January 2023
After one of our students was diagnosed with a brain tumour in the summer of 2022, the school community pulled together to raise funds for the Brain Tumour Charity. A magnificent night of food, drinks and dancing was enjoyed by the school community, alongside an auction on the night. An astonishing 20k was raised.
Thank you to the committee and volunteers who put in a huge amount of work to make it the success it was.
Note: this was paid out in the 23/24 financial year to align with the school’s payment
Second Hand Uniform Shop
As always, our very successful uniform shop has raised a wonderful £1925 across the year for the FOT. We thank all of the volunteers who give up their time to make this possible.
Notes from the Treasurer
-
All the leading roles in the committee have changed during this financial year – see below
-
Edel Thomas in the Treasurer role for 1 year after taking over from Sarah Hoare (2020-2022)
-
Previously there had not been a treasurer since 2018
-
Charity Commission return for 21/22 submitted
-
Becoming a signatory on the account was easy as I am an existing Lloyds customer. It took longer to get a debit card which caused a few issues earlier in the year
-
We need to add another Full Access Signatory to the bank account
-
Uniform Shop has a new treasurer, Michelle Slatter and although she is on the finally on the account, she doesn’t have online banking yet
-
There are a few old account holders to be removed once a 2[nd] full signatory is on
-
2 unfullfilled auction prizes to be refunded
-
Grotto £165 and Present Room £500 paid directly to Just Giving
-
A further 20k will be donated later in the year at the same time as the school makes it’s donation
