TRUSTEES' REPORT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2025
The trustees present their annual report and financial statements for the year ended 31 July 2025.
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the financial statements and comply with the charity's governing document, the Charities Act 2011 and "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (effective 1 January 2019).
Objectives and activities
The charity’s annual principal objective continues to be to promote community participation in healthy recreation by the provision of facilities for amateur boxing. The charity continues to have the general aim of contributing to external partners by providing access to the use of the facilities.
The objective of St Mary’s Amateur Boxing Club is to promote community participation in healthy recreation through the provision of facilities for amateur boxing.
Our committee treasurer and funding officer Gillian Bowen retired during this period but the Charity has retained her services as an AAT qualified Bookkeeper to ensure independent collation and oversight of the Charity’s finances.
Trustee and Vice Chair Craig Simmons has taken on the role of treasurer.
One of our boxing coaches Phil Butters has resigned from the club due to a change of personal address which means he is no longer able to travel to the club. Phil has joined a further England Boxing affiliated club; we wish him all the best and look forward to seeing him at future competitions.
The club still maintains nine Boxing coaches which is more than sufficient to meet the demands of the club. In addition to the above for the year 2025/2026 we have a volunteer who is undergoing initial training to become an England Boxing affiliated boxing coach and a further person who has volunteered to attend the relevant courses to become our new safeguarding and child officer.
All policies and procedures have been reviewed and remain current.
A new Financial Reserves Policy was introduced, which is detailed below.
Achievements and performance
St Marys Amateur Boxing Club works with children, young adults and seniors to provide a safe and friendly environment for them to participate in physical activity and learn core values to develop into kind and considerate members of the local community.
We cater for keep fitters, recreational boxers and those that wish to progress into competitive boxing. We continue to host community sessions for those who suffer from Parkinson’s and offer free curriculum vitae and interview preparation for our boxers and their guardians.
Our commitment is to eliminate discrimination by reason of gender, sexual orientation, race, nationality, ethnic origin, religion or belief, ability or disability and to encourage equal opportunities.

TRUSTEES' REPORT (CONTINUED)
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2025
It’s been a productive year with the club securing a new five-year lease for the use of the premises and maintaining England Boxing affiliation accreditation.
Significant work with the installation of a new heating /air conditioning unit and associated loft insulating has contributed to a more comfortable training environment for our boxers.
No further significant repairs were carried out, and it is not anticipated that further work will need to be completed during the year 2025/2026.
The surprise opening of a new boxing club within our catchment area was a concern, however, Income from subs and 1-2-1 contributions has remained consistent.
Progress during this period has been made with the aspiration of building a new club premises within Shipswright Avenue, Chatham.
An architect has been commissioned to update plans for a steel structure building which will be more affordable and realistic to finance. The architect will also assist in planning permission. Once we are aware of the cost implications, we will be in a stronger position to apply for funding.
To ensure there are sufficient trained staff to manage the club, all coaches are individually qualified to deliver England Boxing Affiliated activities and continue to complete mandatory development training including Boxing Courses, First Aid and DBS checks. All the coaches at St Marys Amateur Boxing Club are appropriately qualified.
On Friday 16th August 2024 we held our Annual Awards night which was well attended by boxers and their guardians. This provided an opportunity to reward all members of the club in a social environment with a disco. All the children were presented with a medal, and individual awards were awarded by the coaches for both children and senior boxers for the following:
Most Dedicated Best Prospect Best newcomer Loyalty award
The awards ceremony also provided an opportunity for the boxers to vote for their ‘Boxers Boxer’ recipient, and a further boxer received the prestigious ‘Fred Ludlow Shield’ which is awarded to the Boxer who has achieved the best results across the boxing season.
A new award introduced this year titled ‘The Social Growth Award’ in recognition of outstanding personal development in social skills, confidence and positive interaction with others was well received and will remain as a category moving forward.
On Friday 15th November 2024 and Saturday 15th February 2025 St Marys Amateur Boxing Club hosted its home shows at Lordswood Leisure Centre which saw boxers from clubs across the Country compete in England Boxing Affiliated competition. Both shows were well attended and afforded both our newer and seasoned boxers the opportunity to partake in a ring walk complete with their chosen ring entrance song and showcase their development under the lights in front of friends and family.

TRUSTEES' REPORT (CONTINUED)
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JULY 2025
During this period, we established a good relationship with the Royal Engineers Army Barracks at Chatham, Kent which has provided both our and the Army boxers with further training opportunities including sparring at our club and the Army facilities. The St Mary’s Amateur Boxing Club home shows included bouts involving Army boxers which provided them with valuable experience in competition as they seek to develop their skills to represent their individual Regiments within military boxing competitions.
At a national level our boxers achieved the following:
Final- Home Counties boxing competition Semifinal- National School boys boxing competition Final -Juniors boxing competition
Financial review
Total income for the year decreased to £29,802 compared to £30,938 in 2024, this is due to decreases in memberships and private hire.
Total expenditure has remained consistent this year, £28,450 compared to £26,582 in 2024.
Overall, this has resulted in a surplus for the year of £1,352 with funds increasing from £95,971 to £97,323 at the year end.
Reserves policy
It is the policy of the charity that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should be maintained at a level equivalent to six months expenditure equating to £13,000. The trustees consider that reserves at this level will ensure that, in the event of a significant drop in funding, they will be able to continue the charity’s current activities while consideration is given to ways in which additional funds may be raised. This level of reserves has been maintained throughout the year.
Structure, governance and management
The governing document of the Charity is dated 1st September 2011. The Charity is incorporated as a charitable incorporated organisation.
The trustees who served during the year and up to the date of signature of the financial statements were: Mr C Simmons Mr R Cane Mr A Devell Mrs R Simmonds

The Committee consists of the following:
Chair – Jerome Xavier Vice Chair & Treasurer – Craig Simmons Club Secretary – Richard Cane Competition Secretary – Aaron Devell Safeguarding and child officer – Jerome Xavier

Plans for the future
For the year 2025/2026 it is the intention of the Charity to continue with our core annual principal objective to work with children, young adults and seniors to provide a safe and friendly environment for them to participate in physical activity and learn core values to develop into kind and considerate members of the local community.

Statement of trustees' responsibilities
The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees' Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice).
The law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the incoming resources and application of resources of the charity for that year.
In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:
-
select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently;
-
observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP;
-
make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
-
state whether applicable accounting standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and

prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charity will continue in operation.
The trustees are responsible for keeping sufficient accounting records that disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Charity (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 and the provisions of the trust deed. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
1 Accounting policies
Charity information
St. Mary's ABC is a charitable incorporated organisation, incorporated in England and Wales. The registered office is 1 Street End Road, Chatham, Kent, ME5 0BS.
1.1 Accounting convention
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the charity's governing document, the Charities Act 2011, FRS 102 “The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland” (“FRS 102”) and the Charities SORP "Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)" (effective 1 January 2019). The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.
The charity has taken advantage of the provisions in the SORP for charities not to prepare a Statement of Cash Flows.
The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, modified to include the revaluation of freehold properties at fair value. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.
1.2 Going concern
At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus the trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.
1.3 Charitable funds
Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of their charitable objectives.
Restricted funds are subject to specific conditions by donors or grantors as to how they may be used. The purposes and uses of the restricted funds are set out in the notes to the financial statements.
1.4 Income
Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received.
Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation.
Legacies are recognised on receipt or otherwise if the charity has been notified of an impending distribution, the amount is known, and receipt is expected. If the amount is not known, the legacy is treated as a contingent asset.

(Continued)
1.5 Expenditure
Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement, and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.
Expenditure is classified by activity. The costs of each activity are made up of the total of direct costs and shared costs, including support costs involved in undertaking each activity. Direct costs attributable to a single activity are allocated directly to that activity. Shared costs which contribute to more than one activity and support costs which are not attributable to a single activity are apportioned between those activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources. Central staff costs are allocated on the basis of time spent, and depreciation charges are allocated on the portion of the asset’s use.
1.6 Tangible fixed assets
Tangible fixed assets are initially measured at cost and subsequently measured at cost or valuation, net of depreciation and any impairment losses.
Depreciation is recognised so as to write off the cost or valuation of assets less their residual values over their useful lives on the following bases:
Freehold land and buildings Nil% Plant and equipment 25% reducing balance Motor vehicles 25% reducing balance
Freehold land and assets in the course of construction are not depreciated.
The gain or loss arising on the disposal of an asset is determined as the difference between the sale proceeds and the carrying value of the asset, and is recognised in the statement of financial activities.
1.7 Financial instruments
The charity has elected to apply the provisions of Section 11 ‘Basic Financial Instruments’ and Section 12 ‘Other Financial Instruments Issues’ of FRS 102 to all of its financial instruments.
Financial instruments are recognised in the charity's balance sheet when the charity becomes party to the contractual provisions of the instrument.
Financial assets and liabilities are offset, with the net amounts presented in the financial statements, when there is a legally enforceable right to set off the recognised amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.
Basic financial assets
Basic financial assets, which include debtors and cash and bank balances, are initially measured at transaction price including transaction costs and are subsequently carried at amortised cost using the effective interest method unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the transaction is measured at the present value of the future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial assets classified as receivable within one year are not amortised.

Basic financial liabilities
Basic financial liabilities, including creditors and bank loans are initially recognised at transaction price unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest. Financial liabilities classified as payable within one year are not amortised.
Debt instruments are subsequently carried at amortised cost, using the effective interest rate method.
Trade creditors are obligations to pay for goods or services that have been acquired in the ordinary course of operations from suppliers. Amounts payable are classified as current liabilities if payment is due within one year or less. If not, they are presented as non-current liabilities. Trade creditors are recognised initially at transaction price and subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.
Derecognition of financial liabilities
Financial liabilities are derecognised when the charity’s contractual obligations expire or are discharged or cancelled.
