Reading of Policy Statement on Children, Young People and the Church ## **Grimsby Baptist Church** ## **Minutes of Annual Church meeting** ## **28th April 2021** ## Present Melvin Cockerill (chairman) with 37 members in the building and 31 members via Zoom. Non-members numbered 6 in the building and 10 via Zoom. There was 1 apology for absence. Due to the on-going global pandemic of Covid 19, the meeting was held in hybrid format in order to comply with government restrictions on social distancing. Face coverings were worn by those in the building. ## **1. Opening Devotions** Stephen Jerrard led in word and prayer. ## **2. Minutes** The minutes of the annual church meeting 2020 were made available in both electronic and printed formats before the meeting commenced. Sandra Haigh proposed and Margaret Deller seconded that they be accepted as an accurate record. This was confirmed by show of hands and the minutes were signed by the chairman. **Reports.** A booklet containing some of the reports was distributed amongst those in the building along with copies of the balance sheets. Electronic copies of the minutes, accounts and independent examiners reports were also sent by e-mail prior to the meeting. ## **3. Secretary’s Report** The secretary read the report which was also in the printed booklet. 4 ## **4. Membership Report** - The secretary declared a membership of 123. A net decrease of 2 (by death) has been recorded during 2020.. There have been no additions due to the restrictions on baptism and contact during the pandemic. **5. Presentation of Accounts** Charles Hazle has resigned as treasurer therefore the financial report was given by the chairman. Charles is continuing in the role of financial support until a new treasurer is appointed. Attention was drawn to the negative impact the pandemic has had on income. It was acknowledged that expenditure has also been less because of restrictions on inperson meetings. The chairman read a statement from Charles Hazle in this respect. **6. The Independent Examiners Report** This has been imported into the report booklet. The report confirms all figures as accurate. Lynn Moore proposed the acceptance of the accounts and report and this was seconded by John Wilson. The meeting accepted the proposition. ## **7. Organisation Reports** - The reports were presented orally, in person, in order to limit the use of technology required in the hybrid format meeting. Officers** The list of officers in the printed booklet was reviewed, highlighting the new appointments and where there are opportunities to serve. ## **9. Safeguarding.** Stephen Jerrard read the Policy Statement on Children, Young People and the Church The meeting was closed with prayer. 6 ## **Trustees Report 2021** by Rachel Cook (secretary). We have sought to serve the Lord and to minister to our members, congregation and the community, and there has been continuity of programme and purpose from previous years. We have operated in accordance with the government guidelines during another year of the Sars-Cov-2 pandemic. Some activities had to pause because of restrictions but we have tried wherever possible to maintain contact with all those connected with or church in any way. ## *Regular public worship, prayer, Bible study, preaching and teaching; Our core activities have been public worship, preaching, teaching and Bible study in our services, Junior Church, youth groups and Home Fellowship Groups. Some of these have been both in person, or via Zoom or our You Tube channel due to government restrictions and the requirement for social distancing. We have facilitated attendance for worship at the building throughout the year, continuing to comply with Covid secure guidelines. Our leadership have continued consecutive preaching from the Gospel of John, as well as an advent series. House groups have featured teaching on the book of Exodus using a study by Tim Chester *Baptism, as defned in the Union’s Declaration of Principle; This has been limited due to the pandemic but during a period of relaxation of restrictions we have witnessed 2 baptisms. There are more candidates prepared for baptism. ## *The Communion of the Lord’s Supper which shall normally be observed at least once a month; We have held monthly shared communion services throughout the year. Members of the leadership team have conducted communion services in homes for those of our 7 congregation who are housebound, only when possible within the guidelines. ## *Evangelism and mission, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally; We have tried to serve the community by providing in person and online resources in the form of lessons and assemblies for local schools. Our puppet team have visited care homes and schools when able. Our music team provided carol singing in the area at during Christmas. We have commenced Fun Family Friday every fortnight, which provides a free hot meal, teaching and socialisation for families with children. Our involvement in the local community centre has been limited during the pandemic but we have remained in contact with them, offering support as able. There has been no direct spending as our contribution has been from the youth budget. ## *The teaching, encouragement, welcome and inclusion of young people _._ We include and involve young people in our services by having a 10-15-minute slot in the morning services particularly applicable to young people and this also forms part of our You Tube services. Junior church has also been facilitated each week at the building. A staffed creche runs during the 11am morning service. The Puppet team have recommenced regular meetings. On week days there are 3 organisations catering for young people “Ignite” (years 1116); NUTS (Years 7-11) and Fun Family Friday for families with children of any age. We have adopted and regularly commit to our Safeguarding Policy. Youth activities are funded by the church and have used £1233 of our budget. ## *Nurture and growth of Christian disciples We have endeavoured to nurture young Christians with 1-to1 nurturing. We also run Baptismal classes and House Groups to encourage the nurturing and growth of Christian disciples. House groups have met regularly either in person 8 or via Zoom. We offer a 6 week Christianity Explored course for those seeking to know more about the Christian faith ## *Education and training for Christian and community service We encourage Christian and community service and offer education and training via other organisations. We support one of our members who works as a Primary Schools Worker. Due to the on-going pandemic, no ‘in person’ training has been attended during the year and therefore no expenditure. *Giving and encouraging pastoral care; We have sought to give and to encourage pastoral care for all those who attend the church and those who are not members. Deacons are elected as people with, amongst other things, “a pastoral heart” but this responsibility is shared across the church and House Groups play a key role in pastoral care. ## *Supporting and encouraging charitable social action in the United Kingdom and abroad We have supported and encouraged charitable action in the United Kingdom; and some members of the church are involved in, Grimsby Shoeboxes as well as Good News for Everyone, LIVES and other charitable work. Around 15 of our members have signed up and trained with Safe families for Children who support families at points of crisis in their lives both practically and emotionally in the local area and Safe Families report that 20 families in the area have been supported by these people. One of our church members is now employed by Safe Families. We run a weekly parent & child lunchtime gathering for fellowship called TOTS GB. Weekly attendance at this group is growing. 9 We run a group called CAMEO, aimed at senior citizens, which promotes fellowship and freedom from loneliness. ## *Encouraging relationships with and supporting Baptists and other Christians. We have supported Baptists and other Christians in a variety of ways. We have a link with the Baptist Missionary Society and have supported members of the New Tribes Mission in several countries. £25,851 of our income was given to The Baptist Home Mission Fund, The Baptist Missionary Society and to Christian workers in Grimsby. Secretary’s Report 2021 Well 2021 has been another significant year in the history of GBC. We have spent another year gripped in the global pandemic of Covid-19 (Sars-cov-2) but once again we give thanks to God that although many of our fellowship have contracted the virus, all have recovered. We give thanks and praise too that, although we have had to re-visit face coverings and other restrictions, we have been able to worship together albeit it in lower temperatures than usual! Our services have been recorded live and uploaded to You Tube each Sunday, enabling those who have had to isolate to be able to worship too. This has also been a blessing to those who are ill, those who work shifts and to some who watch from other parts of the country or indeed, the world. 10 We are grateful to the team who facilitate this, it’s not just a quick job! Our service structure has been reviewed and some changes made and we pray that God will guide us as we continue to consider the way forward. The opportunity of sharing in communion as God’s people together has been a blessing and serving coffee,(when restrictions allowed), between the two morning services has encouraged shared fellowship although there is still room to develop this further. Sunday evenings have also taken a different format and our first car park based praise and testimony evening was well attended and a time of great blessing. We were able to move these inside until, once again Covid infection rates forced these to pause. Attendance at the ‘in person’ prayer meeting has fluctuated due to the pandemic but I’m sure those who have been able to attend will agree we have known God’s presence among us in a special way. The on-line prayer meeting continues to be well attended and provides an opportunity for those who can’t usually attend to join with the fellowship in prayer. Once again, regardless of the Zoom hiccups, we have known the Lord’s presence as we have met together in this way. We have been blessed by witnessing some declare their faith in baptism and we have been able to welcome new church members to our family. We extend our gratitude to Liam, our temporary youth worker, who finished his time of employment with us in 2021 to return to NTM but we are grateful that he and Ellen continue to serve the church in youth ministry on a voluntary basis. Of course, we must bring our thanks and praise to God that He has, in His time, led us to appoint Jason Griffiths as our new pastor. This has been a time of gradual realisation, through prayer and discussion, that this is God’s will for both Jason and this church and I know I can speak for all the 11 leadership as I thank you for upholding us in prayer throughout this time. It may seem like a long time until September right now, but let’s keep that sense of excitement that God has so many things in store for us. We shouldn’t just regard the next few months as a waiting period. Let’s spend this time continuing to serve God and one another, praying that our faith will grow stronger and that God will give us His vision so that when Jason begins his ministry we will be ready: spiritually, physically and mentally prepared to move into the next chapter of GBC together. A copy will be attached to the reports booklet for storage. 13 ## Policy Statement, Children and Young People and the Church _“This statement was agreed at the Church meeting held June 27[th] 1996. It will be read annually at the church meeting held in the month of September where progress in carrying it out will be monitored.”_ 14 - As members of this church, we commit ourselves to the nurturing, protection and safekeeping of all, especially children and young people. - It is the responsibility of each one of us to prevent the physical, sexual and emotional abuse of children and young people and to report any abuse discovered or suspected. - We recognise that our work with children and young people is the responsibility of the whole church. - The church seeks to be committed to supporting, resourcing and training those who work with children and young people and to providing supervision. - The church is committed to following the Home Office Code of Practice “Safe from Harm” and adopts the guidelines and procedures published by the Baptist Union of Great Britain in its booklet “Safe to Grow” - Each worker with children and young people must know the recommendations and undertake to observe them. Each shall be given a copy of the church’s agreed Procedures and Good Practice Guidelines by the leader of that organisation. _**Children and young people are part of our church today.
