Radlcal Am•rlca
Radical America was a product of the ¢ampus-based New Left ol the late 1960s. specffic31ty the Students for
a Demo¢yali¢ Society ISDSI, but the magazine long outlived its seedbed. Its trajectory shows somèthing
about the effort to place an Intello¢tual stsmp on the radical impulses of thè late twentieth century. The SDS-
tonnected Radical Education Project, formed In 1*6. encouraged SDS members to start long-distance
study groups that would èxplore topics relevant to the new radicAlism. Th8 issues housed at MDR offer
miscellany of articles and documents having to do with the history of American radicalism. Frequent themes
were the histones and stiategi¢s of New Left organlling efforts.
Her• and Now
"Here and Nobv, was a Biits'SP￿baSed situationist magazine published btheen 1985 and 1994. Here & Ni)w
originated in Glasgow as the successor joumal to °Clyde3ide Anarchisl.. The first issue appeared in the
spring of 1985 after il was agreed to set up the new journal in Decembei 1984. At the start most of its
members were Involve(I wth the Clydeside Anarchists group, as the intri)ductson to the first issue states. By
issue 5. a joint production schedule with a collective in West Yorkshire had Cornmen￿d, and many of the
West Yorkshire gr￿p came from "The Pl8asure Tendenw..
Anarcho- Punk archlve
Since the beginning ol the year. in co118boration with researcher Seth ￿eeler, WÈ started a project that aims
to archiv¢ and tell the histories ol British anarch&punk and explore how Music cultures could produce direct
acts'on, coordinate, and sustsin political movements. MayDay Rooms has acquired a significant donation
Iiom tre members ofchurnbawamba and aims to expand the collection to indude documents and ephemera
from other anarchtrpunk bands actwe In the last decades.

Since its inception. MayDay Rooms has been tr￿1￿ on the prinryple of archiving from below, challenging thè
conventional insts"tu*onal methods of gathenng, shaping, and disseminèb.ng the history of struggles. In the
year ending October 2025, we conts.nued to host regular events and discussion groups to addrèss the
practices of archivirKJ from below and strategies of ac*'vth"ng the histori85 of resistance. The group is open lo
archivists. researchers, historians invdved in boih past and present organising, and anyone interested in
radical archives. Our aim hAS been to share our own approach. learn from each other. and Collaboratively
develop counler4rchival practices that oxlend btryond mere crrtique.

Concluding our Joseph Rowntree Charitakle Trust lundod pro1￿ whi¢h cornrnenced in 2023. we developed
a successful working relationship wttt the Glasgow Women's Library IGWLI. which resylled in a significant
collaboration.. a fft-an&a-ttall-month 8xhibilion on their premi5e5, together with a series of public èvènts.
GWL contribul&d significant in-kind value to the For Peacel project and inwted access lo their audiences and
stakeholders. Our collaboration the Spirit Of Rev(Jl Archive (Glasgowl buttressed this work and enabled
us to m&kè the exhibition of great local relevan￿. We also built on the ex15ting relationship with Four
Corners (London) to mount a thrde-week exhibthon there. Lastty. we decided to re-present the matonal from
thesé exhibitions in an online legacy exhibition. pemianenly aecessible on the MayDay Rooms website".

Youth Progrnmmo
In F$bruary 2025. we launched a youth-created oral history archbvè on thè Student Movernent ueated as
part ol the Arts Ctyjnul funded 'Unctsvering the A¥¢hive' Youth Programme in collaboration wth On the
Rocord. This archive wll be a resour￿ for past and prèsent student activists and researchers ol student
rnovements.
Koy athievemenfs ol the 'Uncovering the Archive, progfamme indijde intre88ed youth engagement wth our
archive, the creation ol a significant new C(￿leCtIon of YOuth￿enerated uealive work, and the development of
aceès$ible, atternative ways to eX￿Ore the histories reflected in our collections. We built trust with
partiapants and the communibes Invofved, and successfvlly implemente(J a youth engagement strategy th8t
can be adapted by sister archives. The pamphlets. posteis. zines, filrns and oral histories prodU￿d by 20fv
participants have been crucial In actw*ing and reinterprets'ng material related lo Black Asian. queer aTrY
working-class histories in innovative ways. These matèria15 Mll be attessi￿ed into our permanent
collections lor use by future researcher$. activists. and archive-enthusiasts.
The projecl a150 had a major impact on our internal culiurè. For the first time. we are embedding an outreath
development strategy ai*oss our public prograrnming. Staff came into contact with collaborator5 and
participants who have deepened our understanding of archival practice and content, and we are commrtted
to continuing this model of collaborative learning to improve sector accessibility. Several proi6ct partrers are
now approaching us for adwce on youth outreach, publi¢ engagement and future collaborations.

In Novernber 2024. we began an ongoing ¢ollaboration with DOPE, 8 Quarterly magazine about politrs. art
and culture distributèd by street vendors free of charge and who keep 100¥0 ol the profil frorn sales. We will
run a regular feature to showcase our cdlection and emphasise the importance ol learning from history for
today's polrtical struggles. The first artide was about the Claimant's Union. and subsequ8nt artides include
Troops Out Movement (Feb 20251, History from 8elow and punk (May 20251. Disarming the War Stale
(Octobèr 20251 and Global Ecology not Global Economy (November 20251. This regular feature in
magazine with a distribtrtion ol over 40,0(KJ per issue is an exc4tsng an(J vital new avenuo for MayDay Rooms
to lulfil one of rt$ core purposes.. to treat our archival holdings not as static rep051tories of the past, but as live
documents to leam from tod#y, 8nd to make these histories availalAe to as broad an audience 8$ P0$5ible.
Podcastlng Studlo
In the last financi81 year we compleleol the in5tallatton of a sound recording studio in the MayDay Rooms
archive, funded by the Lipman Miliband trust. In the 18St financial year. this was used by a number tsf
unfun¢led groups to make their own audio outputs, including programmes on 98rning. housing, political
organising and more.

Empalhebc EX¢hange ISPACEXI initiats've. SPACEX is a transdi5uplinary research a¢tion that fosters
cdlabtsTalions beNveen academic instrtutions and Ihird.sector organisatsons Ihr¢)ugh secondments. Wlttiin
this project, we ale focused on the archive stream which explores various methods for activating and
accesgng digital archives, as well as doeumenb'ng grassroots movements.
Two secondments took place in April 2025- the first to Athens. where our researcher co-hosted a radio show
th Music Society web radio eXplor￿ng the history of rave curture, music. housing. work. unemployment and
class. The second was to Hdsinki, where our researchèr workecj on a translation of 8erta Lask's 1925 play
on the German Peasants, War. for publication by Rab Rab Press We cornpleled another secondmenl in
June with tho University of Modena, and vi$￿ted aichives in Emilia Romagna and further afield induding
Archivio Marco Pezzi. Archivio Via Ave8ella. Archivio G. Pinelli, Cèntro sludi e documentazione Sh¢rwot)d
and more.

In OctobÈr 2024. MayDay Rooms hosted thè launch ol Dabath's. second publi¢atTon "Languages and
Peoples" which explored an￿"_nationall$t strategies thitsu9h rnullilingual essays and collective responses. As
part ol our monthly Archiving from Below IAfBI sèiies, we discussed Sven LindqvisYs"Dig Wnere You Stand"
workers. history manu81, connecting DIY history with community-led archiving practices.
In November 2024. we $C￿ened.￿l Work and No Pay" 119761 alongside videos from the National Congress
of Neighborhood Women. examining the 1970s Wages ftsr Housework carnpaigns in London and New York.
Wè then held a second AfB event on "Archive Stories" wth Sara Salem and M81 Taha. exploring Cfeabve
and non-traditsonal arehiving approaches. In Deeembtrr 2024. we concluded the year with another AfB event
exploring the history of the 1970s-80$ Claimants Union movement through an oral history project Ir¢Jn
MayDay Rasjio.
In January 2025. MayDay Roorns screened Johan Grimonprez's'dial H.kS-T-O-R-Y' alongside videos from
the Activist Media Project archive. We facilirated discussions on critical video
archiving wactices and how moving images Can Serve as resources for eng89ing wth historical fragments.
In February 2025, wè cfrlaunched Mad Kin zine at Queercircle wrth an aftemoon featuring poetry readings.
talks on rnigration and policing. and workshops on abolitionist organising and safe housing ne￿OrkS. part
of a regular Archival Film night. we screened "The Archivette5" a docurnentary about the Lesbian Herstory
Archives, followed by collective discussion On docurnenting LGBTQ+ histories and the challenges laced by
grassroots arehtvtr$.
In March 2025, hAayDay Roorns co-organised a screening of 'Ultravbolence" with Statowatth and People's
Tribunal oll Poli￿ Killings, examining struggles f(Y jUStiTr by famil￿$ affed&d by deaths in p)Irce custoty.
We then held an evening with ex-8ig Flamers Max Farrar and Kevin McDonnell to discuss their book Big
Flarne". Building the Movements. New Politics" For the archival film night. we sryeened Cheryl Dunye's 'The
Watermelon Woman" 119961, exploring theme5 of Blad( lesbian lilrnmaking and hidden Hollywood histories.
The AfB event for this month was in ¢dlab(x8b'on with Agit Press. examining how archives can ￿nc#0￿ as
an inventory, or as lodboxes lor contemporary movernents.
We cdlabor*ed wth Pelican House and Revdutionary Papers on an exhibition and pand dkscussion about
antpwlonial periodicals and 8rchiv81 materials. We celebrated the 30th anniversary ol 'The Association ol
Autonomous Astronauts, which Included exhibrtions, screenings, and discussions on space rnilrtafisation and
tourism. We then hekl an AIB session exploring how worktsrs iwuiry" methods could be applied lo archNal
eontexts and labour.
In M8y 2025 we tteld another AIB èvent with June Givanni, foundei of the June Givanni Pan-Alrican Cinoma
Arch1ve and iecenl BAFTA winner, alongside artist and writer Onyeka Igwe. The ovent explored their
experiences building archive cdlects'ons that loregroun¢J marginalised histories and develop radul
approaches to 8r¢hiving itself.

In June 2025, MayD8y Rooms screened "Rebel Dykes.. a docurnentary about the 1980s post%Junk Lcndon
lesbian aclwi51 comrnunity that combined archival footage, animation, and tèsb"fflonigs. We a150 held an
'Archival Imagin8ries" workshop al Peli¢an Hou58 on how print ephemera and visual cutture of past
movements can inform contemporary resistanco infrastructure. We hosted Minh Nguyen fTOrn the Dogma
Collection to examine Vietnamese revolutionary visual culture and its parallels grassroots movem¢nts
worldwide, featuring original Vietnamese revolutionary rnaterials alongside ple￿5 from MayDay Rooms.
In Juty 2025, Chris Jones from 56a Infoshop archNe pr8sgntsd on three decades ol counter-cultural
archiving Practi￿8. The tdk examined how materials are presented and used. exploring the sensuous
nature of counter-cuttural producbon and why dift8renl version$ of texts are preserved in the archve. We
also held a bookstsll at Brainchild Festival in London showcasing archival materkql and publi¢th'on8. Thi5
was ttte final evènt b8fore annual August cbsure.
In September 2025, wè knck8d off our programrne a se3siry7 titled"Global Ecology not Global Economy,.
examining lessons from the history ol the 19￿S ecological dI￿¢t action movemènt. This event was led by an
AHRC PhD placementee who catalogued this collection over a 6 month period. In October 2025 we were
also awardecl a Wyear grant trom The NatR)nal Lottèry Hentage Fund t¢ develop our collections. catalogue
and programming for a project of the same ti￿e.
In October 2025, PhD researcher ￿lelIe Lawson led a workshop on 1970s London grassroots and actNist
newspaper print cutture, sharing ideas lor pot¢nlial London-focused arc*wal efforts. As part ol the AIB
series, we screened 'The Ban" 120241, which examined British govemment censorship of IRA-associated
voices during the conflid In the North of Ireland whid) was at￿Mpanied by a practs'cal guide to working wth
film archives and copyright law from director Roisin Agnew. Foi a Ihir¢ts year running, Moushumi Bhowmik
held a o)ncert and listening event sharing her recent work Rehearsals for Revolution. on Bengali songs and
diaspora sounds. The month conclijded with a workshop wrth Lola Olufemi activating a Gollaboratsve digital
assemblage of over 300 archival documents radical social Fnovements. exploring collective writing
pradices and archival strategies for documenting the present political mrnent.

Arts Council England lor our youth engag&ment programme 'Uncovering the ￿chI¥&,. This was for a total of
£3e,744 frorn September 2023 to February 2025. wth Ihe last instalrnent paid in July 2025. Secondly. the
For Peacel project funded by Ihe Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust erTrded spending with the launch ol
exhibitions in Glasgow and London, and an online exhibition laund)ed shortly after In the next finaneial year.
The total grant W85 £48.000, with an additional £3,500 given by the Bary Arniel and Norman Melburn Trust
in SUPFQrt ol the exhibitsons. MayDay Rotsm8 conty'nues to receive an annual grant for CO￿ costs. as well as
generous (*onations from patrons and supporters to cover bas￿ running costs.
Rèsearch plo¢ements
From May until OCtO￿r. in the frarnework ol the CHASE ￿a¢ement $cheme. we hosted a student from Ihe
University ol Sussex. During this time, they assisted the Archwist and worked dosely Mth them to catalogue
and sort aichival materia15, produTr archive finding aids. and trial-labgl wllectK)ns ar¢)und the direct action
ecological movement. The placement culminated In an artide wrrtten for DOPE magazine and a public event
at the London Anarchist Bookfair organised by the student.
From Marth unbl De￿rntser, in the framework of thè AHRC placement scheme. we hosted a student trts
the Univerw ol Cambridge. During this tme they researched the connections between anarchist thoLJght,
organi5ing. and creative wactice. The pl￿ment culminated In an 3rbcle written for DOPE magazine and 8
Beries ol public events during which the Student explored the theme of anarchist creativrty In conversation
with activist5 donated their collections to the MayDay Rooms Atchive.

Basis of preparalion
The financial statements have been prepared under the historic cost convention and in accordance
with the Finanual Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Ropublic of Ireland IFRS1021. the
Charities SORP IFRS1021 and the Companies Act 2C4)6. A summary ol the more Ilnportanl

MayDay Rooms reported a defiut for the year amounting to £7.358 but has been abl@ to fully meet
Its financial obligations as they fall due. The pnn¢ipal source ol funding continues to be grants and
rent tree accommodatson trom the Glass-House Trust. The ￿nt-free lease has been extended unts'l
August 2033 and it is anticipated that grant funding wll continue at current levels until then.
On this basis the diredors are of the view that th8 tharity is a going concem and the financial
ststements hove beén prepareé on this basis.

Operating leasgs

in which the rentals are payable.
The ch&ity tsperates trom premises owned by the Gl8ss-House Trust for which no monetary rent is
payable. In accordance wrth the Charities SORP IFRS1021 the diredors have estsblished thts fair
V31ue of the rent that would be payable lor similar p￿MIseS in the location and details are provided
at note 13. As the￿ is a formal lÈ&se in plac8 eonfiiming that no lent ￿ payable the Trustees
consider that no disdosures in the Statement ol Financial Activities are requir$d.

The charity is wtsynisod as a t*arity for laxalion purposes. AB such. the charity is exempt from tax
on income and gains lo the extent that these are applied tts charrtable obiectivas. No tax chargés
have 3ri8en in the charty. The tharity is not register&# for Value Added Tax (VAD. Expenditure
indudes any attributable VAT.

Cash at bank and in hand includes cash and short terrn highly liquid Investments wilh a maknrty of

Creditors are recognised where the charity has a present obligation results.ng from 8 past event that

can be measured or estirnaled reliably. Creditors are normally recognised at their settlement amount
after allowing for any discounts due.

The charity only has financial instruments of a kind that qualify as basic finamal instruments. Basic
