The method of appointment of Trustees is set out in the Trust’s Arcles of Associaon.
Trustees meet on six occasions throughout the year. The year has been considered as another stepping stone in the objecves to coordinate a centre of excellence for all those making use of the programme.
Objecves and acvies
Medway Watersports Trust’s objecves are to provide opportunies for the youth and young adults of Medway, especially but not exclusively, the disadvantaged. The Trust also offers Watersport acvies to the wider populaon and encourages the people of Medway to take full advantage of the River Medway and other facilies on their doorstep. The Trust raises income by offering tuion and training as a Royal Yachng Associaon and a Brish Canoeing Training Centre along with grants and donaons.
Achievements and performance
2023/24 has been a very successful year for bookings as we saw a total of 786 children and adults through the doors (under 18’s 585, over 18’s 201). This is an increase on totals of 571 in 2021 and 448 in 2022. We connue to improve our offering to encourage more children onto the water on a regular basis, with award based acvies in both paddle and sailing.
Aer some protracted negoaons we eventually agreed a new 5 year lease with Medway Council, although this has seen an increase of £6,900 over the term of the lease, taking it to £11,500 (£2,300 p.a.). This is a huge increase for us and we have been working hard to obtain sufficient grant funding to cover core costs so that we have sufficient to pay the monthly runnings costs alongside the increased lease costs. Our core running costs are circa
£1,000 p.m. but unfortunately we rarely have monthly income to match this. Grant funding is, therefore, extremely important to us. However, these are becoming harder to obtain as the focus of the grant givers have changed considerably since COVID, Brexit and wars in various parts of the World.
During 2023/24 we had the following funding successes:-
| Boost | £650.00 |
|---|---|
| MagicLittle | £500.00 |
| Sport England | £3,500.00 |
| Barretts | £2,000.00 |
| Shipwrights | £1,500.00 |
| Tesco Groundworks | £1,000.00 |
| Colyer Fergusson | £4,100.00 |
| VanquisviaKCF | £3,600.00 |
| AndyThomson | £899.00 |
| ColeTrust | £1,200.00 |
| LaurencePlummer | £500.00 |
| Morrisons | £6,100.00 |
| MedwayLottery | £500.00 |
| £26,049.00 |
Financial review
The charitable company has a reserve fund which has been set aside as a conngency fund and to ensure that the lease costs for the next 5 years are met.
Plans for future periods
with a more structured approach to the sessions we offer to enable both children and adults to go away with some form of qualificaon if they wish. We are also going to trial Sunday Family Sailing Sessions as there has been some interest expressed in this. We have also spent Winter 2023/24 refubishing the communal changing rooms to improve our offering. The site connues to be developed and refurbished by a team of dedicated and experienced volunteers.
