## **Directors Report for Year Ended 5 April 2021**

The directors present their report, together with the financial statements of the company, for the year ended 5 April 2021.

## **Principal activities**

The principal activity of the company in the period under review continued to be the advancement of the arts by the promotion in particular, but not exclusively, of the art of drama.

Box of Tricks 2020-21 activities were predominantly digital due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

In May, we shared a digital companion piece to our curtailed tour of The Last Quiz Night on Earth _Kathy in Lockdown_ to connect with our audiences and community of artists at the height of the first national lockdown.

Later that month, we launched our PlayMakers Network for Northern playwrights and theatremakers to connect, collaborate and create. Now with 550+ members, the network goes from strength to strength with a range of talent development opportunities and events for playwrights at all stages of their career – all completely free to access.

Covid-19 has highlighted the many injustices and inequalities in our society and accelerated urgent social change. In June, we shared our Positive Action Plan and commitments to positive change now and in the future. We continue to work with the support of consultant Sara Rasul to develop and implement the policies outlined in the plan.

In July, we launched our PlayMakers Fund to raise much-needed creative funding for Northern talent during this crisis and beyond. We’ve already raised nearly £2500 that has been paid forward and invested in professional development, creative projects and artistic opportunities for Northern playwrights and theatremakers.

In summer, we committed to supporting PlayMakers through our brand new Pen Pals exchange programme. Matching pairs of playwrights to connect, share

2

ideas and develop their craft, our first cohort of 12 Pen Pals began in September and, overwhelmed with talent, we launched a second dozen in November. Cohort 3 will begin their exchange in summer 2021 and we envisage the scheme continuing to run beyond that.

October saw us commission 12 mini digital plays in response to Manchester moving into Tier 3. Take Back Manchester, in collaboration with Take Back Theatre, gave Mancunian playwright performers 48 hours to raise their voice and respond artistically whilst theatres remained dark. The rapid responses were seen by over 21,000 people and had over 2500+ complete views. We closed the submission window for our inaugural Screen/Play Award in partnership with Sky Studios in November. At a time when our industry faces the greatest crisis of a generation and stands to lose a wealth of talent, **Screen/Play** shines a light on voices that need to be heard and stories that need to be told. We received **341 submissions** and unveiled the Longlist of 64 writers and Shortlist of 15 in December 2020. The two winning writers – Sarah Tarbit and Conway McDermott – were announced in January and will have their plays showcased at HOME in early 2022. Alongside the development of the two winning writers, we have also planned and delivered a series of online masterclasses with industry professionals for the 15 finalists.

Following the Covid-curtailed _The Last Quiz Night on Earth_ , we reunited the original cast to livestream _Last Quizmas_ by Alison Carr – a speciallycommissioned piece of digital quizzical theatre – which zoomed directly into over 130+ living rooms across the country during two performances in December. We are still planning to remount the original show in 2022.

In January 2021 we announced the writers for our fourth cycle of PlayBox – our early career writer on attachment programme. This year we will be working with four writers, rather than the usual three. The writers are: Daneka Etchells, Adam Fenton, Stef Reynolds and Mitesh Soni. All writers will have their plays showcased at HOME in early 2022.

We would like to thank the Arts Council for its continued support as well as the individual donors and trusts and foundations who continue to support our work, including: Garrick Charitable Trust; Unity Theatre Trust; Granada Foundation; Manchester Neighbourhood Investment Fund; Salford City Council.
