East End Church
Annual Report
Note from the Chair of The Trustees
Hello East End Church!
It is that time of year where I get to sit down, to stop and reflect on the year that has been. The faces, the stories, the community we call East End Church, and I cannot help but thank the One who has put each of us here for such a time as this, the One who East End Church is built on, and everything we do orbits around – Jesus.
It is such a privilege to lead and be a part of what Jesus is doing here in the heart of East London. To see new faces and old faces, to join you each Sunday in worship, to watch and encourage each of you stepping out and using the gifts He’s given you, and through all of this to see lives being changed & transformed in the middle of a broken, fallen and messed up world.
First things first, a massive high-five to every single one of you who served with a selflessness that left us speechless. You guys are the real deal! I'm talking about those countless hours you poured into East End Church & each other – both seen and unseen.
The time and money you sacrificially gave, prayers prayed, the things which may not make the headlines but are seen by the Audience of One.
During 2022 it was humbling seeing God open doors into different communities. To baptise 5 people. To see life and growth in the generation we want to see run further and faster than we have. To hear of healing on the streets, of teenagers punching bags not each other. To see the Academy class of 2022 grow. To pray together. Meet with God together. Have a pint together. Come Dine With Me together. Have a feast after Church on a Sunday together. To turn up on a Sunday with everything already set up, to a coffee waiting right after. And I hope as you read this Annual Report, and some of the stories within – it will encourage you, it will stir you, it will raise your faith, it will make you proud & excited to be part of what’s happened and but more important what is happening and the part you have to play in it …
In the Annual Report you’ll also find details of our finances for the past year, money we received in, as well as where that money was spent, together with details on a number of the people and organisations we were able to financially support thanks to your generosity. An impact locally, nationally and globally.
A big thanks to the other trustees – Ros and Shaun for continuing to navigate things so graciously, so wisely and so faithfully. To the staff team Tom and Jenny – for everything they do both seen and unseen.
Let’s continue on this mission together, playing a part in God’s Big Story, shining bright in a dark world, and growing, learning and building together.
Many blessings, Steve

Preaches
East End Church is a Church which loves the Word, is hungry for the Spirit and
during 2022 we had the privilege to teach and apply God’s word to our lives in the
middle of East London in the 21st century. It says in Isaiah 55:11 that God’s word
does not return empty, and throughout the year we saw this with many stories of
people encountering Jesus & having lives changed.

EAST END CHURCH
We started off the year doing a series on God’s Great Big Beautiful Plan - going through the bible from cover to cover looking at what does it mean to be created in the image of God, how should we as a Church address and respond to questions of diversity in East London in the 21st century and what is our part in this great big plan. We finished off in traditional East End Church style with an International Feast and it has been encouraging seeing the ongoing fruit from this series as we continue to reach others & reflect Jesus!
We then started going through the book of Philippians with a series called ‘Finding Joy in Humble Circumstances’, looking at what Paul teaches us about joy when times are tough as he spread the Gospel in the early Church. We covered a number of passages looking at what joy is, and what joy isn’t, what it means to be a Citizen of Heaven and looking to Jesus as the ultimate example.
Over summer we had a break from meeting together, but had weekly stories & testimonies shared through the Summer Stories series with over 600 people viewing this across the month of August.
Finally we finished the year doing a series on The Kingdom of Heaven - going through the book of Matthew and seeing the Kingdom of God, is anywhere God is King. That as a Church we want to live out in real and relevant ways the words of Jesus - Your Kingdom come, your will be done on EARTH as it is in Heaven.

Prayer on The Streets
This last year we’ve continued to go out to Roman Road and Chrisp St markets seeking to love and share Jesus with those communities and to pray for people, if they’re up for that. Although, if we’re honest we often don’t feel like going out before we go, we usually come back so thankful to Jesus for the privilege of partnering with Him, and having seen Him do some amazing things. We’ve run training before we go out, and have continued to have people join us from other churches which has been great.
We’ve got to meet with, share Jesus with and pray for so many different individuals over the year, here are a few stories:
One of the team popped into the hairdressers on Roman Road to see if anyone wanted prayer – a lady in there wanted prayer for pain in her back and also for her spelling to improve. After prayer, the pain in her back had reduced significantly from 10/10 to 3/10 and she started writing and said her spelling seemed better!
One time when we were praying before we went out, a couple of people had a picture of a Muslim lady with a purple dress and a black headscarf and some-one else had the word arthritis. A couple of the team saw a lady who met that description in the queue for the cash point. She had limited English but had arthritis in her hand and said she was up for the guys praying. After prayer, she was moving her hand much more and the pain was 90% better. The team got to explain that it was Jesus that had healed her and that He loved her and had died for her.

Box up Crime
Things at Box Up started slow this year, but as we met continually on a Friday evening, the regulars have not only grown in friendship, but have progressed in fitness levels and skill. One or two have even stepped in to help coach newcomers which is very encouraging. We are looking to see other regular trainers added to the team, which will mean that we can start to advertise beyond word of mouth and see the sessions grow. We pray for all the boxers at the end of each session, and it is a real joy to see people from all manner of backgrounds acknowledging that Jesus is the reason we do what we do. Another source of encouragement is the way in which there has been a growing and natural crossover between the Boxing and our regular youth work. The young men who train before youth, are fairly obvious, as they tend to bring with them the mixed blessing of an overwhelming smell of Lynx Africa!

The ALPHA Course
After an enforced break due to Covid restrictions, it almost felt naughty, meeting with a group in an enclosed space for Alpha. We had about 10 people complete the whole course, with many others attending for one or two evenings. Nick and Jude’s hosting was, as usual, fantastic. The atmosphere created was more akin to datenight than evangelistic presentation! Several people are now regulars on a Sunday morning and are serving across church life as a result - including a spin-off young peoples’ Alpha. Looking forward to more next year…

Young Adults
"We were all eager to hear what the bible says about relationships, money, diversity plus many more"
Sarah Wallace, Young Adults, Leader
Young Adults started 2022 as a modest group of half a dozen young people meeting together, and finished it as a thriving, regular feature to church life thanks to God’s provision. As a group we aim to build each other up in faith, while welcoming everyone regardless of where they’re at with Jesus.
In January, we kicked off our meetings with a ‘Real’ series – which included discussions on faith and growth. We traded our own ideas and learnt what the Bible had to say on the topics, whilst eating everyone’s favourite sweets - Squashies. Plus, we had plenty of chances for some laidback socialising – gathering for lunches together post-church and the odd pub trip. The highlight of the social calendar for the group came in June, and everyone put on their dancing shoes and finest clothes for Prom. With summer, things heated up in Young Adults as we tackled Hot Topics.
We were all eager to hear what the Bible had to say about relationships, money diversity plus many more. We had a chance to delve deep into what may be the forefront issue of our generation, Mental Health, over a weekend away in the countryside. Teaching was the heart of our time away, though there was plenty of time to cement our connections as a group with games in the fields and meaningful chats over cups of tea. After a summer break, Thursday evenings in autumn were spent looking at Righteous Rebels
– figures from the Old Testament who stepped out for God. This series saw some members of the group leading for the first time. It’s been inspiring to see members gaining in confidence and skills as leaders. As a whole, we were encouraged by Andrea and Heather coming to chat about prophecy and teach us how we each could cultivate the gift of prophecy.

EEC women have had another brilliant year – gathering women of all ages from across the church once a month for breakfast. We’ve been blessed again this year with the space at Old Ford Rd Methodist church to host a buffet breakfast every other month. With fellowship, food, testimonies and teaching, together we lifted our eyes to Jesus.
Highlights included a morning of breakfast and worship, studying truth about women of the bible, being blessed by the EEC ‘Young Adults’ leading us in teaching and testimonies too as well as our very own Christmas mini market which was a great opportunity to celebrate the talents of several women within EEC & invite friends. We’ve had opportunities to pray for one another, seek God for one another and build true friendships all over coffee, croissants, that amazing fruit platter and sometimes even cake! It’s been a really encouraging time to see women stepping out in using their gifts each month in so many different ways.
On alternate months we’ve still enjoyed meeting together in local cafes which has been a great way of welcoming new women to EEC & getting to know one another.
We are expectant for more great times over breakfast in the coming year as we look forward to continuing to build His church in East London!

EEC Men’s Ministry is about helping men young and old get more connected with other blokes in church, at the same time creating opportunities for men not used to church to easily get involved and explore a faith of their own.
This year we’ve been on tours around London looking at the lives and times of well known men of faith. We hold regular men’s breakfasts enjoying food, company and conversations and get together for pub nights, cards nights and worship nights. These all build up to our annual event, the Mentathlon. Once a year we make a special effort to gather together for two days of fun, competition, worship and testimonies. The most recent Mentathlon was focused on the theme of prayer. Over two days and locations - a park in Bow and a farm in Kent, 30 men battled it out taking on various challenges including clay pigeon shooting, rugby volleyball, tug of war and in the evening a quiz that included rolling a tractor tyre through a forest. It was great to hear testimonies after the event of friendships being strengthened, news ones being formed and men stepping out in prayer

Asylum seeker/ Refugee outreach /Support
Since early 2021 we have gotten to know lots of families in nearby Home Office accommodation. Through my work as a support assessor for a local charity supporting pregnant women I was able to meet and visit lots of families in their homes and meet weekly for a walk. Many of these families have fled violence and persecution. Their experiences and perilous journeys have often left them disorientated & traumatised .
Through my charity we’ve supported about 100 pregnant / women and gotten to know and support lots of families. As a church we’ve been able to show them the love of Jesus and invite them along. Lots of them have attended church and many kids come to our kids club, and some are now junior leaders. Many also attend the football club each week too. At our recent International Lunch there were 53 people from Seth court and they brought along amazing food from their home countries.
Meeting each week with the ladies was a way to help them, not only feel less isolated; but it also allowed them to navigate the area and find places they could take their children - along with promoting mental well-being, developing friendships and engaging in some exercise. We also practise conversational English as many speak very little English. Farsi, Kurdish Sorani, Spanish, Albanian and Eritrean are just some of the few languages we encounter, so it’s been a challenge, but we often see funny scenarios - we laugh a lot!
We have started a bible study with lunch at Lindsey’s each week for those that have questions, and want to find out more - and that has started growing!
It is sad when you make new lovely friends and they suddenly are transferred elsewhere. I felt God say ‘ nothing is wasted .. that these seeds ofMentathlon - June the gospel sown will spring up and bear fruit in other places.'
We also started new groups in 2 other accommodations with Heather EEC & Selam LCM .
Please do pray that God saves many, and that they will know the life changing truth of the Gospel.
God has brought the nations to us ...and many right on our doorstep.

At RenewEL we continue to employ a team of landscapers installing gardens and community spaces in London. The year has definitely had its ups and downs with changes of staff and the impact that has on the business; compounded with the cost of living crisis affecting clients' income available to spend on garden upkeep.
I remember one morning literally with no work planned for the next day we prayed over a list of quotes of potential work for the team and amazingly by 11.00am a client had returned an email to say they would like to proceed with two of the quotes! It really has been a season of trusting the Lord to provide.
It has been a pleasure to bring real unity and family to the RenewEL team, we had the opportunity to attend Encounter Camp in July where a number of the team had a deeper encounter with Jesus and His heart for them.

In the summer term we encouraged the kids to look upwards and glimpse a big, awesome, loving, Father God. We wanted to equip kids to become worshippers of the only one worth worshipping...Jesus. In the autumn term we invited the kids to team up with the holy spirit and join Jesus on his mission as we looked at the Great Commission. We have been really encouraged to see the kids reading their bibles, hearing from God and telling their friends about Jesus this year and are excited to see what God will do with his young disciples in the coming year.
Every Wednesday we take a group of these kids to football training run by ambassadors. In May some of them took part in a football tournament. It was a real highlight for them and was much talked about.
We were also involved in a summer camp held in Weavers Field. It was run by people from different churches in Tower Hamlets and was aimed at asylum seeking families. We had 50 children attending. They had lots of fun and each day heard how Jesus wants to be their friend. Many of these kids are only with us for a short while but it is a privilege to be able to share Jesus with them and know they go to their next place with the knowledge of how much God loves them and wants to have a relationship with them.
As well as Sunday mornings EEK have been involved in many activities in the local community. During 2022 we went regularly into a local hostel where asylum seekers are living. We played games, did some craft activities and invited them to kids club. Many of the children now regularly come to kids club and some are apprentice leaders.

East End Academy / Ambassadors
East End Academy is a football project for children in east London, run jointly by Ambassadors’ football and East End Church. It runs every Wednesday for children in school years 2 - 7 of all backgrounds and abilities. We teach football skills, play fun football related games and learn stories from the Bible. Two of the three age groups entered the London Churches Football Tournament and narrowly missed out on a trophy.
East End Academy ran a 3 day football camp over Half Term running all the activities we usually do on a weekly basis but culminating with competitions and matches. Friends and family came along on the final day to see their child receive certificates, medals and trophies. All the parents got to hear about what we had been teaching the kids and received an invite to church.

Once again, EEC hosted the GrowTH winter night shelter for the homeless of Tower Hamlets. Between October 2022 and April 2023, 133 men and women received a bed in the shelter, with hot meals by volunteers, and support from GrowTH caseworkers. 63 of these guests went on to secure new accommodation, thanks to the support given by GrowTH and partner organisations such as Crisis.
GrowTH opened a daycentre for the first time and some of the EEC family enjoyed attending events such as Gram Seed sharing his testimony. The daycentre provided a warm and welcoming space for shelter guests to spend their day, as well as free lunches and much needed luggage storage solution.
EEC rallied round to serve the guests from January to April and we are grateful to every individual that took part! Whether you set up beds, cooked a meal, slept overnight, shared the gospel, led a bible study or befriended a guest, we want to say a huge thank you.
A guest who stayed in the shelter at Christmas and since moved to rehab was recently baptised. We rejoice together at this news, as it is a fulfilment of GrowTH's vision to see the marginalised of Tower Hamlets be transformed by God for His glory. We look forward to serving next winter!

Rough Edges is a Christian podcast that began in Lockdown 2020, hosted by our youth leaders Ruby and Elijah. The incentive was to share and spread the gospel through streaming mediums such as Spotify and YouTube. Both had the pleasure of interviewing many Christians from different walks of life for example Pastor of Beacon Church Brixton, Owen Hylton shared the importance of embracing Race and Cultural Diversity in the UK Church, Ex Assistant Vicar of St Parsons Green Will van Der Haart shared valuable tips and strategies for the church with how to deal with the ever-growing challenges of Mental Health amongst young people. Our very own Benita shared her testimony about her life as a Pediatrics Doctor and her experiences living in Sierra Leone. Elijah and Ruby gave an insight into their current lives after graduation, most recently Bobbi Kumari spoke to Rough Edges and shared some hard hitting truths about Sex and Sexuality. Rough Edges will be continuing in September 2023 with more challenging topics, amazing testimonies proclaiming our saviour, The Lord Jesus Christ. Thanks for listening!

East End Youth had a fantastic 2022!
----- End of picture text -----
At the start of the year we had 13 regular youth attending, who were mostly from church attending families, and then nearer the end of 2022 we had around 25 young people from all sorts of different backgrounds regularly attending. We have been doing one social and one study a month. For the studies, we have been watching 'The Chosen’ series, which bring to life the New Testament. We had a ‘Hot Topic’ series, where we deep into big questions- such as sex & relationships, ‘Is it a sin?’, etc- often bringing in outside speakers to share their testimonies and their wisdom on how we should deal and approach these topics in a way that will bring all glory to God.
Also, there were 16 young people at Newday, and 10 of those were there for the first time. A highlight from Newday was where a few of our guys were praying for a boy in front in a wheelchair and he got up and was walking! We also saw a guy healed with crutches and he was carrying them on his shoulders.
Furthermore, a girls discipleship group started in the autumn of 2022, where the girls would meet up every other week to catch up and pray- and this group has been handed over to the older youth girls who are now discipling their younger peers.

As Elders and Trustees, we recognise that everything we have is God’s, the one who owns a cattle on a 1000 hills, and that we are simply stewards with what He has blessed us with. And while this is an individual challenge, it is also something we want to model as a Church so we set aside at least 10% of our income to give away to other Charities and Organisations.
During 2022 we gave away £18,000 (including some specific one-off donations). We try balance this across local, national and international causes, as well as one-off’s and ongoing support. This included ongoing support for the work Colin and Pam are doing in South Africa, Heather in Uganda and Charlie at LCM, Ambassadors, New Ground - as well as supporting Eli and Ruby during their various mission work during the year,
We are grateful that we can be generous with what God has blessed us with, and encourage people within Church to continue to pray for all the people and places we support, as well as highlight any needs they come across locally, nationally or internationally.
