Note from the Chair of the Trustees

One of the highlights of my year, is writing these letters.

2021 started off with the legacy of Covid and continuing to meet online, after which we were able to meet in the Sports Hall at Raines. During this time it made us all appreciate what is ‘Church’. It isn’t a building, it isn’t Raines, it is us. And that is why it was so hard not meeting face to face, and why it was so good when we were able to meet up in person again.

It was exciting to see all that God was doing - a lot of which is captured in stories within this report from Alpha, Youth, Kids Work, Prayer on the Streets, Men and Womens Groups - as well as seeing relationships among people organically grow and flourish. We were grateful for a number of things starting up again such as the New Ground Academy which were were able to send the next intake of EEC’ers to! I’d like to say a big thanks to Frazer who at the end of 2021 stepped down from working for East End Church to return to his role at the Civil Service. In the time Frazer worked for East End Church, he brought a determination and organisation driven from his love for Jesus, and in this time had such a servant heart to East End Church and all those who are part of it.

Would also like to say a huge thank you to Lindsey - the glue and engine room of East End Church! After several years working for East End Church, Lindsey decided to go back to teaching - and talk about a big hole left. Lindsey is who makes the rest of us look good, and I can’t say thank you enough for going above and beyond in everything you did, for your patience, being so dependable, and being an absolute super star. We are grateful for Jenny who has stepped up into this role and looking forward to having her on team!

Also to the Trustees, Ros, Shaun, Elaine and Frazer for all the work put in behind the scenes. Collectively they provide such a confidence, healthy balance and challenge to the Governance and Oversight of East End Church.

Thanks for all the volunteers, people who gave their time and money to East End Church - there are far too many people to thank. In the middle of East London, it was such an encouragement and great to see the Body Of Christ, working together to reach a diverse community in which we are based!

Thanks to Shaun for being Treasurer again during 2021 - our finances are in safe hands! Once again we were grateful that God provided everything we needed, to do all He has called us to do.

As we look forward to 2022 (as usual I am writing this half-way through 2022 so am cheating slightly) we are looking forward to doing nothing other than continuing to partner with our amazing King, to join Him on His mission here in East London, and to be eternally grateful that He chooses a ragtag bunch like us to be part of His Great Big Story.

East End Church

Preaches

East End Church is a church built on Jesus. We love the Word and are hungry for the Spirit. During 2021 we loved seeing what God revealed to us as we preached His word on Sundays.

We started off in January doing a series called ‘Foundations’. We had done a similar series around 12 years ago when East End Church started, but we recognised a lot of people (well most people!) have joined us since, and it was timely to go back to basics, remembering that Jesus really is our unmovable Cornerstone; and teach into who we are and why we are here.

After that we moved on to a series looking at the life of Elijah, a man who knew God and seeing how this played out across his life.

And finally, we recognised that people have a lot of questions, and in fact Jesus did too! So we finished the year off going through the book of Luke, looking at some of the questions Jesus asked, and through this being reminded that Jesus sees you, Jesus knows you, Jesus meets you, and Jesus loves you.

EEC MEN'S GROUP

"The challenge was: 'Are we getting too angry about some things and not angry enough about the things close to Gods heart, such as injustice.'

Dan Owen

EEC Men’s group is about creating opportunities for men in the church to build friendships, invite men, not part of EEC, along to activities and inspire one another in our walk with God. Men’s Breakfast and ‘Pints of View’ are monthly opportunities to do this. In the last year we’ve also held several one-off events such as bike rides and cards nights.

The highlight of the men’s events calendar is the annual Mentathlon when the majority of men in the church, plus guests, head out of London for a weekend of fun, competition, worship and seeking God’s plan for our lives. This year we headed to a farm in Essex. In between times of worship, feasting, water sports and smashing nails into wood, we spoke about emotions. The challenge was "'are we getting too angry about some things and not angry enough about the things close to Gods heart such as injustice." White team won this year but the blues will be keen to reclaim victory in 2023!

STREET PRAYER

"We’ve had several people come along to join us from other churches to see what we’re doing, which has been great,"

Benita Morrissey

We’ve loved going out as a team to Chrisp Street and Roman Road markets, seeking to join in with what God our Father is doing, sharing Jesus, praying for people and seeking to demonstrate His love and goodness. It’s been so exciting as we’ve seen Him move again and again, and people encounter Him, being encouraged, and taking steps towards Him. We’ve had several people come along to join us from other churches to see what we’re doing, which has been great, and also been running some short training before we got out each time in a variety of cafes and outdoor spaces.

Here is one story from last year [names all changed]

Greg – sadly recently lost two of his children, and described his heart as being really broke. Greg wanted prayer for peace and also for his drug and alcohol addiction. He said as he was being prayed for, he felt real comfort, like a ‘cushion around his head.’ We’ve met him subsequently, and he wanted more prayer, and has also come along on a Sunday to church.

EAST END CHURCH

At RenewEL we’ve enjoying a season of blessing alongside growth and transition. In the past 12 to 18 months we’ve continued to carry out landscape work in private gardens and had an ongoing work stream all through the winter of 2021. The maintenance has continued on our current projects including John F establishing a fruit and vegetable garden and carrying out training at George Green School on the Isle of Dogs.

Our site manager Dan left the team in May to pursue a career in the Fire Service and so we appointed a site manager and operations manager to replace him, both Darren and Liam are both a blessing to the team and have settled in to their roles well.

We are so thankful to the Lord for allowing us to continue and thrive after the pandemic, which for many was very difficult. As unemployment rises, now more than ever we recognise employment for the disadvantaged is vital and therefore feel blessed to be able to continue to provide this.

"In total, 33 men and women were hosted, with 19 securing more permanent accommodation"

During the winter of 2020/21, GrowTH responded to the pandemic by switching models and using a local hotel to shelter the rough sleepers of the borough. EEC and all the other partner churches adapted by providing volunteer teams to serve the guests, and by delivering a hot meal to be served, plus breakfast packs.

Due to the country being in lockdown, the guests were able to stay in the shelter well beyond the typical 28 night stay. In total, 33 men and women were hosted, with 19 securing more permanent accommodation, thanks to the resettlement casework of the GrowTH advocate workers. Not one guest tested positive for COVID during their stay. GrowTH is thankful to EEC for responding so flexibly and keeping the guests safe! Many heard the gospel thanks to online Zoom testimonies shared. Let us pray that seeds sown will start to bear much fruit for His Kingdom.

"Events this year have included picnics, worship, bike ride, tea party, and Christmas market"

Karen Coster

As restrictions around meeting together began to lift in the Spring of 2021, the Women’s planning committee came together to pray, plan and seek God for inspiration in organising events for the coming year. Events this year have included picnics, worship, bike ride, tea party, Christmas market and our infamous monthly breakfast with teaching and testimony from the women of East End Church. The Women’s events are such a precious time to come together; they are filled with Fun, Food and Fellowship but at the heart of what we do is the desire to encourage one another, pray for each other, and to seek God for his will for our lives individually, and as a body of women who wish to serve him here in East London. We encourage each other to reach out and invite women of any age to come and meet with Jesus. We have seen that Gods' love transcends all barriers; we have regular attendees aged between 12 and 80+ Thanks to all the women that attended, helped, prayed and continue to do so. These events would not be possible without the support of so many talented, generous and Christ-flled women. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Old Ford Methodist Church for trusting us with their space and believing in our vision to see Jesus reach the hearts of the women of East London.

ROUGH EDGES

"Peter Buckley who was ‘Arrested for an Attempted Murder’ shared a memorable testimony of how the power of Jesus began to turn his life around for the better. "

Elijah Marshal

Rough Edges is a Christian podcast that began in Lockdown 2020, hosted by our youth leaders Ruby and Elijah . The incentive was to share and spread the gospel through streaming mediums, such as Spotify and YouTube. Both had the pleasure of interviewing many Christians from different walks of life, for example Peter Buckley who was ‘Arrested for an Attempted Murder’ shared a memorable testimony of how the power of Jesus began to turn his life around for the better. The Single Mums episode was another successful testimony of the life of Elijah’s Mum Michelle and Ruby’s sister Betty. They gave the viewers an insight to how they are raising and shaping young boys into young men, by themselves, in the East End of London. This segment stands as Rough Edges most listened Spotify episode to date. Most recently, Assistant Vicar of St Parsons Green Will van Der Haart came on the podcast sharing valuable tips and strategies for the church on how to deal with the ever-growing challenges of Mental Health amongst young people. Rough Edges will be continuing in 2022 with more challenging topics and amazing testimonies proclaiming our saviour, The Lord Jesus Christ.

Total Amount given: £30,000

As Elders and Trustees, we recognise that everything we have is God’s, the one who owns a cattle on a 1000 hills, and that we are simply stewards with what He has blessed us with. And while this is an individual challenge, it is also something we want to model as a Church so we set aside at least 10% of our income to give away to other Charities and Organisations.

During 2021 we gave away £30,000 (including some specific one-off donations). We try balance this across local, national and international causes, as well as one-off’s and ongoing support. This included supporting Welcome Churches (housing refugees), First Love Foundation (local foodbank), Colin and Pam in South Africa, Heather in Uganda, GrowTH, RenewEL, Power the Fight, Jubliee Plus, Newground, Ambassadors, LCM and the work the Good Shepherd Mission is doing with refugees.

We are grateful that we can be generous with what God has blessed us with, and encourage people within Church to continue to pray for all the people and places we support, as well as highlight any needs they come across locally, nationally or internationally.

East End Church is a Company Limited by Guarantee and registered as a Charity. It was incorporate on 8thDecember 2010 and registered as a Charity on 2nd March 2012. The Directors of the charitable company (“the charity”) are its Trustees for the purposes of the Charities Act 1993 and throughout this report are collection referred to as “the Trustees”. They are also the members. The charity is governed by the Memorandum and the Articles of Association. East End Church is a member of the New Ground group of Churches.

The Trustees, who meet around four times a year, are responsible for the ultimate financial and legal governance of the Church, having regard to the adviser and guidance of the Elders team. The power and appointment or removal of Trustees rests with the Trustees. New Trustees are selected from the members of the Church who are well known to the existing Board of Trustees and have demonstrated high levels of dedication and commitment towards the aims of the Church. The Trustees bring experience in business, accounting and finance, law, charity administration and health and safety. All new Trustees are taken through an induction outlining the roles and responsibilities required of them.

Law applicable to charities in England and Wales requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year that give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Chatiy and of the profit and loss of the Charity for that period.

The Trustees are responsible for keeping accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy, the financial position of the charity and which enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006 and all other relevant legislation. They are also responsible for the safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the presentation and detection of fraud and other irregularities. The Trustees confirm that the accounts comply with current statutory requirements and those of the Charity’s trust deed.

East End Church operates with a core Elders team of four who are responsible for setting the overall vision and objectives of the Church: Tom Head, Stephen Coster, Evans Bissessar, and Frazer Macdonald. The Trustees delegate the running of the charity to the Elders of the church, who oversee the achievement of the objectives of the charity, day to day operational decisions and the co-ordination and strategic direction of East End Church’s work. The progress of the Elders team is monitored regularly by the Trustees. The Trustees monitor financial, risk management and internal control, which includes implementing and enforcing relevant policies and procedures.

In order to achieve this, the objectives of East End Church are as follows:

To advance the Christian faith worldwide by proclaiming and furthering the Gospel of God and His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ y preaching and teaching the Christian faith.

· To relieve sickness and financial hardship, and to promote or preserve good health by the provision of funds, goods or services or any kind, including through the provision of counselling and support in such parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees from time to time may think fit.

· To advance education in such ways and in such parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees from time to time may think fit.

As an outworking of these objective, East End Church’s vision is to be a God glorifying large church, known in the local community which supports and is supported by the New Ground group of churches and encourages, drives and supports global mission.

The Church seeks to work for the common good. We believe that the Church should help make the city a better place to live, and as a result we support people and projects that making living here better for everyone and particularly those who are less well off. The Church seeks to work for the spiritual renewal of East London. We believe that there is a great need for the nourishment of the human support and there is no better way to do this than to help those who are seeking faith to connect with their Maker through Jesus Christ.

When planning activities for the year the Trustee and leadership of the charity have considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit:

Charities and Public Benefit (PB1/PB2/PB3)

· The advancement of Religion for the public benefit (December 2011) · The prevention of Relief of Poverty for the public benefit (December 2011) · CC15b – Charity Reporting and Accounting: The Essentials (January 2013).

The vast majority of East End Church’s events and activities can be accessed free of charge. When a charge must be made, every effort is made to ensure that the cost does not exclude those for whom the activity would be especially beneficial for (this includes financial subsidies where appropriate).

The main areas of charitable activity of East End Church are to advance the Christian faith and the provision of relief, education and assistance for persons in conditions of needs, hardship or distress.
