## **Kakatua Bulu Cockatoo Sanctuary**

## **Registered in England and Wales Charity Number 1146051**

## **Annual Report 2022 - 2023**

## **Objectives**

The charity’s objectives as set out below are:

a). To o er life time Sanctuary to all unwanted, neglected, abused, disabled, or ill cockatoos of all Species.

b). To raise funds to enable the charity to carry out this work by encouraging donations from the public and request sponsorships from families (where applicable) who leave their cockatoos at the Sanctuary.

## **Sanctuary Expansion**

In this period the country was still recovering from the e ects of the Covid pandemic and the charity accepted many cockatoos to live under its care.

Either families had su ered a bereavement or financially they were no longer able to cover the expenses of keeping their cockatoo. In some cases people gave up their cockatoos as they were working from home whereas previously they had been o ffi ce based.

## **Work Carried Out**

During this period the charity constructed a new building to house these cockatoos. Which is an insulated building with light and heat as many of those cockatoos are either old, feather-plucked or disabled and these birds are not able to live in an aviary.

This building was funded by donations from the public to the charity,

## **How We Raise Funds**

The charity solely relies on donations from the public. As an animal charity we are not eligible for lottery or government funding.

Being a specific charity for Cockatoos this is not easy, as the general public mainly associate animal charities with dogs and cats. Not exotics such as Cockatoos. Which is why it is imperative to the survival of the charity that families can sponsor their cockatoo when it is left here if possible.

We have a web site from where people can donate to the charity and/or sponsor a cockatoo.

This web site includes many photographs of the resident cockatoos and means of sponsoring whether or not a family who has left their cockatoo.

## **Social Media**

The charity has a Facebook page and an Instagram page.

Reaching out to the public via social media is vitally important to the charity and Facebook brings along many new supporters and donators, even when they are not cockatoo owners.

## **Social Events**

Prior to 2020 the charity attended the annual Think Parrots show which is a Trade Show for parrot related businesses and for parrot lovers to attend,

The charity raised funds by selling various items both parrot and non parrot related items donated to the charity. However this show has ceased to take place since 2020 when the Covid pandemic came about.

Therefore currently the charity does not raise funds externally from events or shows.

## **Guidance & Education**

We o er support and advice to members of the public on our Facebook page and via the many telephone enquiries and emails we receive.

Education concerning prospective and current ownership of a cockatoo is vital as this may prevent the ill health or worse of a cockatoo after purchase and in turn may prevent those cockatoos from being surrendered to the charity.

Our web site o ers lots of advice concerning diet, health and general care and people may contact the charity via the web site for advice.

## **Volunteers**

The charity is run solely by volunteers. No trustee or volunteer takes any salary.

## **Financial Statement**

The charity had an increase in funding this financial year of approx £5,000 and this was solely via a one o ff personal donation to cover an external expense incurred by the charity.

Otherwise our finances since charity registration in 2011 have increased, albeit slightly until this last year when it has levelled o ff .

Some people have cancelled sponsorships and donations and whilst the charity has received some new ones, the funding remains largely the same, although the intake of cockatoos has vastly expanded.

100% of funds is spent on caring for the cockatoos.

Spending consists of the purchase of aluminium aviaries, cages, toys, perches, food and health related products from various suppliers and vet bills. During this financial year a large portion of funding went towards buying materials to construct the new building.

The charity does not have any investments or restricted funds nor does it pay any salaries or expenses.

All donations are generated from the public via the web site or social media or general enquiries.

The charity has not received any monetary donations from any other external source.

The charity does however receive a generous donation in the way of seed being supplied Free of Charge by an external pet related company.

Income for the financial year 2022 - 2023 £29,544 Expenditure for the financial year 2022 - 2023 £26,066
