The Dowlais Community Centre is a vital hub at the heart
of its community, based in 3 Acres of land and 3 buildings:
The Ticket Office, Community Centre and Boxing Gym,
offering a wide variety of classes, expert tutors, and
partnerships with local agencies throughout the week.
More than just a service provider, it operates as a
cornerstone for community building, fostering strength,
resilience, encouraging collaboration, and nurturing
meaningful connections.
The transformation of these underutilised spaces into
vibrant community assets, the Centre fosters a future
rooted in integrated services and community-driven
regeneration. This lasting support lays the foundation for a
resilient legacy, empowering the community to thrive,
evolve, and meet the needs of generations to come.

Merthyr Tydfil Shotokan Karate
We have seen contlnued growth and commitment from the
Merthyr Tydfll Shotokan Karate Academy, proudly based at
Dowlais Cornmunity Centre. The academy provides children,
young people. and adults wlth the opportunlty to learn and
practlse tradltlonal Shotokan Karate, promotin8 fltne55,
dlsclpline, respect. and personal development.
Regular twice-weekly classes cater for both beglnners and
advanced grades, ensurlng a strurtured and welcomlng
envSronment where new members feel supported and
exlstin8 Students can pro8ress steadlly through thelr
gradings. Under the guidance of experlenced Instructors, the
club nurtures confidence, achievement, and a strong sense of
communlty spirlt.
Carl Betty Martlal ArtsTaekwondo
The Trust 15 deli8hted to continue Its support of Carl Betty
Martial Arts Taekwondo, a club that plays a vital role in bulldlng
confidence, re511ience, and community spirit among young
people in Merthyr Tydfil.
Founded and led by Carl Betty, the club offers much more than
martial arts tralnlng. Through the discipline of Taekwondo,
chlldren and young people learn respect, perseverance, and self-
belief
5ki115 that help them succeed not only In sport, but also
In education and everyday life.
This year, the club has seen strong growth in partlclpatlon, with
many students achievin8 new belts and some cornpetin8
successfully at regional and national levels. Just as importantly.
the sessions provide a safe and supportive environment where
young people can develop frlendships, Improve their wellbeing,
and gain positive role models.

Dowlais TableTennis
This year has been an excitin8 and produrtlve one for
Dowlais Table Tennis, Participation ha5 grown steadily,
with both seasoned players and new member5 taking
advantage of regular practice sessions, coaching
opportunities, and competitive play.
Beyond competition, Dowlais Table Tennls has
continued to foster community splrlt. Weekly sessions
have brought together players of all ages and skill
levels, creatln8 a welcomSng environment that
balances friendly rivalry with camaraderle.
Shappelle's Dance
This year has been one of growth, creativity, and
communlty for Shappelle's Dance
From the youngest beginners to our m05t
advanced perforrner5, every student has shown
dedication. re5illence. and pa55ion. Weekly classes
were f Illed with energy and progress.
Behind every leap and turn Is the hard work of the
teachin8 staff. whose creatlvlty and guidance
continue to nurture a love of dance in everv
student.
We also run an array of classes. such as dog-
walking, tot-fit dances and gym related
classes.
CommunltyCentreGym
The Community Gym at Dowla5s Community
Centre has welcomed over 400 members this
year. offerlng a range of modern equipment.
flexible workout times. and personallsed workout
plans.
Staffed by two qualified gym Instructors, the
facility provides professional support to help
members achieve thelr fitness goals. The gym
continues to be a key part of the community,
promoting health and wellbeing for all.

Dowlais ABC Boxing
This year. Dowlais ABC Boxing has
celebrated growth. achiv4ement, and
community spirit. The athletes excelled
in local and regional competitions,
earning medals and recognltlon that
reflect their dedication and hard work.
Beyond the rlng, we contlnue to provide
an inclusive, supportive space for all
ages. promoting fitne55, discipllne, and
confidence. Investments In coachlng and
facllltles ensure the members have the
best envlronment to thrlve.
DOWIAIS ABC
The Railway Café
The Railway Café is nestled In a beautlful
locatlon wlth stunnlng scenic views,
making It a favourite spot for both the
local
communlty
and
nearby
organlsations.
We proudly h05t a weekly carers group,
which provides a vital space for carers to
connect wlth each other and wlth local
support or8anlsations.
Durlng the colder months, we operated
warm hub, offering not only a heated
space but also much-needed soclal
nteractlon-particularly important for
those living alone.
The café is also regularly used by a
variety of local or8ani5atlons for
meetings and gatherings. whether for
patrons, staff, or collaborative events.

This year, demand has increased, reflecting wider
economic challenges. Thanks to the dedication of
volunteers, staff, and 5UPPOrters, the Dowlais
Community Centre Food Pantry continues to rneet
the growing needs of the community, reinforcing
its role as a cornerstone of local support and
resilience.

Alternative Education Programme
This year, the Trust stren8thened its commitment to alternative
educatlon. supportlng chlldren and young people who face
barriers in mainstream 5choolin8. Our focus has been on flexible.
learner-centred programmes, holistic wellbeing support, and
vocatlonal pathways that prepare learners for further study or
employment.

The Stephens and George Charltable Trust actively en8a8es the community through its
volunteer programme, offerln8 diverse opportunities such as readlng support, café asslstance,
counselling placements. 8ardenlng, and event support. Volunteers, includlng students and
Duke of Edlnburgh participants, galn valuable skllls whlle maklng a tarbglble Impact.
Comprehensive training ensures they are well-equipped, and their dedlcation was recognized
wlth the Queen's Award forvoluntaryservice In 2021.
The Trust also partners wlth local businesses through Its corporate volunteer programme,
enablin8 employees to contribute to meanlngful communlty projects whlle fosterin8
teamwork and social responsibllltv.

The Stephens and George Charitable Trust continues its commltment to promotlng Ilteracy
and supporting educatlonal initlatlves through Its Book Donatlon Scheme and Book Shop. Both
programs serve as key avenues for fosterln8 learnlng, provldlng resources to underprlvlleged
communltles, and promoting sustainable access to books.
Book Donalion Scheme
The Book Donatlon Scheme ha5 been a cornerstone of the Trust's educatlonal outreach.
Throughout the year, the program facilitated the collection and dlstrlbutlon of books to
schools, Ilbraries, and community centres, prloritlzlng areas where access to reading materlal
Is Ilmited. Oonated books ranged from children's Ilterature and educational textbooks to
reference materlals, ensuring a broad spectrum of age groups.
Bookshop
The Trust's Book Shop complements the donatlon scheme by providing a sustainable
platform for book accesslbility. It offers a carefully curated selection of books, includlnE
educational resources. general literature, and rare collections. Proceeds from the Book Shop
are reinvested into the Trust's charitable initiatives. including funding further book donations
and literacy programs.

connections. and ralsSn8 awareness oftheTrust's broader mission. Through innovative events.
promotions, and partner5hlps wlth local organizatlons. the Book Shop has expanded Its reach,

Chess Initiative
The Chess in Schools initiative is currently belng dellvered across 17 schools in Merthyr Tydfil,
en8a85n8 more than 580 young people. Thls flagshlp programme Is designed to enhance
learnln8. soclal Interaction. and personal development through the game of chess.
The project Is led by two qualifled Chess tutors, who provide structured guldance and support
to puplls. ensuring both skill development and enjoyrnent.

The Baby Bookworm proJect is a Ilteracy programme run by the Stephens and George
Charltable Trust, deslgned to encourage early Ilteracy and Inspire a lifelon8 love of words
amon8 pre-school children.
Early literacy focuses on speak5ng and11stenln8 skllls. such as:

These 5kllls are most effectlvely developed in a soclal environment, where pre-school

Ambassador Support
The project is proudly sUPPOrted by Lucy Owen. BBC presenter and newsreader, who
serves as the Arnbassador of the Stephens and George Trust Programme. She champions
the campaign that:
"Everychild should be read to, or read a book. before bed."
This campalgn highlights the Importance of bedtime readlng In supporting language
development, nurturin8 a love of stories, and building a stron8 foundation for lifelong
learnlng.
The Baby Bookworm initiative plays a vital role in promotlng early lan8ua8e development,
confldence. and social interaction, ensuring that young children begin their educatlonal
Journey with the skills they need to thrive.

MerthyrTydfil Children's
Literature Festival
The Stephens and George Charltable Trust is delighted to announce that the Merthyr TydfS1
Chlldren's Festlval 2025 wlll take place on Thursday, 1st May 2025. Th15 flagshlp event will
once again transform 28 venues across Merthyr Tydfll town centre into a vibrant
celebratlon of Ilteracy. creatlvity. and communlty spirlt.
Adding to the excitement, children from local schools will take centre stage with
performances in sln8ln8, dancing, and drummin8-skllls they've been rehearsln8 In
antlcipation of the big day. These showcases will celebrate the talent. creatlvlty, and hard
work of Merthyrfs youn8 people. maklng them the heart ofthe festlval.
Now In Its latest edltlon, the festlval Is the result of two years of dedlcated plannin8 and
preparatlon, Involvlng schools, community groups, volunteers, and partner organisatlons. It
stands as a testament to the Trust's commitment to lon8-term, impactful cultural
pro8rammln8.
Thls year, the festival is expected to welcome over 6,000 chlldren and young people from
across Merthyr Tydfll. offerlng a day filled wlth interactlve activities. storytelling, and artistic
expression.
A major highllght of the 2025 programme will be the appearance of renowned children's
author MC Grammer. whose energetlc and engagin8 performances are sure to Inspire
youn8 audiences and i8nite a love of readlng.
The Merthyr Tydfll Chlldren's Festlval contlnues to be a cornerstone of the town's cultural
calendar, reinforclng the importance of literacy. imaglnatlon, and communSty telebrat5on
and proudly placlng Merthyr Tydfll on the national map.

Thls year, our after-school clubs and hollday camp at Dowlals Community Centre have
contlnued to 8row as a safe, nurturlng, and creatlve space for chlldren and families In our
community. With a focus on wellbeing, hands-on learning, and soclal connection, we've
welcomed over50chlldren across our weekly sesslons.
In response to growing concerns around screen time and dlgltal fatlgue, we introduced
a"No Phones or Computers" policydurlng club hours. This declslon was made In
consultation wlth parents, staff, and wellbeing professionals, and has been met wlth
overwhelmlns Support. Chlldren are now encouraged to engage fully in actlvlties such as:

people aged 8-24 years acros5 Merthyr Tydfil. Each year, the servlce supports around 280
young people, wlth referrals made dlrectly from local GP practices.
Over the past year, we have further strengthened our reputatlon and deepened our
partnershlp with the MerthyrTydfil Prlmary Care Cluster, ensurln8 that young people have
timely access to mental health support wlthin thelr communlty.

BursaryAward Scheme
The Stephens and George Charitable Trust Bursary Scheme provides financial support to
youn8 people who requlre assistance to pro8ress in their educatlon, or pursue further
education opportunities, or develop their talents within local small arts organisations.
This year, the Trust was proud to award a bursary to Libby Morgan, who has successfully
completed her first year at the Northern Ballet School, where she is training to become a
professional dancer.
Llbby ha5 already taken part in three professional shows and is focuslng on Jazz to
5tren8then hertechnique, performance Skills, and confidence. We are dellghted to 5UPPOrt
her journey and wish her every success as She enters her second year of training and
contlnues to worktowards herfuture Career In dance.
