Chairperson's Statement
One of the privileges of being Chalr of this Trust Is that I might obseThe the children and VOLrth of Merthyr and have
feedback from staff and volunteers.
All of the wonderful events that are held in our Communlty Centre and what we Introduce into our local schools are
enhancing young people's lives and Merthyr.
The chess, the ￿adIng1 the wlldlffe, the garden, the theatre, the rnuslc. All of these are enthuslastically attended.
As an "observerf, I feel that many chlldren and their parents have a strong sense of prlde In thelr Community and
Herltoge, yet do not know the full extent of Merthyr's contrlbutlon to the Industrlal Age In the Unlted Kingdom and
Indeed the world.
From Canals to Steam (thanks Mr Trevithickl from Iron and coal.
Many fortunes were made from the hard work of the people of Merthyr and many Ilves lost.
Unfortunately, some young people feel dlsenga8ed, havlng no prlde In themselve5 and their homes and Communltv.
I belleve ihat If young people felt more pride and enga8ement w￿h thelr community and herlta8e, they might want
to learn more and strive to achleve, rather than settllng for an Inferlor educatlon wlth no ambition for their adult
lives.
My directlon and therefore the Charity's focus has become one of Instllllng more of our local heritage, and of our
beautiful surroundings, as local hlstory Is not taught in Welsh schools anymore, and to try and brlng back some of
the"Hwyl" for what was achleved and "Hiraeth" for what we have lost. To glve back the Prlde to the Community.
with my heartfelt thanks to our loyal staff and all of our volunteers.
Vaness8 Jones, Chair.
