## **Report from Chair of Building Malawi for 2023**

As always, our focus is on providing the infrastructure to enable the education of children and communities in Malawi (building libraries, community halls and school buildings).

Our current project is the development of an area of land on which we have built a secondary school, library, police post and a community hall. The funding provision for the secondary school had the proviso that we remain involved in the funding of the running of the school for 2 years which has now elapsed, but we have continued to support it financially while it becomes more independent.

The following activities took place at the Lingadzi Academy Site near Lilongwe, Malawi in 2023.

- There was the continuing work on the registration of the charity in Malawi.

- February 2023 - there was a snail infestation on the site, with trees and shrubs around the school buildings being destroyed, so funding was provided to eradicate the snails with salt.

- In February 2023 a memorial site (in memory of a recent loss of a family member) was set up on the site which was funded by a private donor. This included the planting of many trees and shrubs including roses.

- In February 2023 the roof blew off one of the buildings and funding was provided to provide a replacement.

- In April 2023 a contribution to the salaries of staff and running costs at the secondary school on site was made.

- In April 2023 the site was connected to the electricity grid, enabling power to be provided in the secondary school. This was partially funded by the Centurion Rotary Club of Colchester.

- In July 2023 a contribution to the staff salaries and running costs at the secondary school was made.

- ● In August 2023 a sum of money was contributed by Ascent Soccer to build a primary school facility and hall on the Lingadzi Academy Site. Work started on building the primary school classrooms and toilets and showers. This was to consist of 4 large classrooms which were constructed with earthbags with tin roofs, and the toilets and showers were traditionally built with thatched roofs. The planting of trees and shrubs were to be integral to the design of the school.

- In August 2023 a further payment was made to the secondary school to pay the pension fund for the teachers.

- In September funds were sent to fund the continuing build of the primary school.

- In October funds were sent to fund the continuing build of the primary school.

- In October funds were sent to supply the secondary school with extra desks which were required for the number of pupil admissions.

- In November further funds were sent for the build of the primary school.

- In late November a further payment was received for the second phase of the build of the primary school facility, and phase 2 was commenced.

- In December the building inspector inspected and passed the build.

- In December more tree planting took place over the whole site to maintain greenery and shade.
