THE BRENDAN INGLE FOUNDATION

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2022

The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2022. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES Objectives and aims

The Brendan Ingle Foundation was established as charity to continue and develop boxing trainer Brendan Ingle's community work. Since the establishment of St Thomas' Boys and Girls Club in 1963 Brendan Ingle worked tirelessly on a voluntary basis with socially excluded young people and has been instrumental in turning their lives around. This includes keeping them out of prison, being a key part of their rehabilitation post prison and coaching them in life skills to help them become better citizens. He was awarded the MBE in 1999 in recognition of his community work. In the process he produced 17 World, Commonwealth and British boxing champions. The Gym currently has 150 members with 85% from an ethnic minority background.

The aim of The Brendan Ingle Foundation is to address the needs of socially excluded individuals or those at risk of becoming socially excluded, by pursuing the following objectives 1) promoting social inclusion; 2) realising the needs of the socially excluded and 3) helping the socially excluded reintegrate into society using a combination of sport, mentoring, education and training.

From a more formal perspective the charity's purposes as set out in the company's objects contained in the company's memorandum of association are:

To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing people from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society, in particular but not exclusively by:

For the purposes of this clause "socially excluded" means being excluded from society, or parts of society, as a result of one or more of the following factors: unemployment; financial hardship; youth or old age; ill health (physical or mental); substance abuse or dependency including alcohol and drugs; discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, disability, ethnic origin, religion, belief, creed, sexual orientation or gender re-assignment; poor educational or skills attainment; relationship and family breakdown; poor housing (that is housing that does not meet basic habitable standards); crime (either as a victim of crime or as an offender rehabilitating into society).

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE

During the year the charity undertook the following projects.

  1. Holiday Activity Fund ("HAF") Healthy Holiday activities - it delivered a successful Healthy Holidays programme during the Summer 2021, February Half term 2022 and Easter 2022 school holidays. This was targeted at school children who receive means tested Free School Meals ("FSM"). This was funded by Holiday Activity Fund which was funded by Sheffield City Council. The programme consisted of a combination of non-contact boxing, dance and outside games including football and dodge ball. All delivered by qualified coaches and teaching assistants from the local primary schools. The teaching assistants also had a role in promoting the programme within the schools. For The Easter 2022 a day trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park was organised. For each Healthy snacks were provided to the children taking part and packed lunches for the day trip. The Foundation received excellent feedback from the children and their parents and carers.

  2. Partnership programme with Empire Fighting Chance - Through a successful application to England Boxing , the Foundation was given the opportunity to partner with Empire Fighting Chance. Empire is one of the most successful boxing charities in the country. Trustees and employees of the Foundation travelled to Bristol for a free, two-day training course in June 2022. After learning about Empire's successful schools programme on the training days, the Foundation wanted to explore how they could replicate this approach in the school work they were undertaking in Sheffield. The project has now started.

  3. During the year, the Foundation continued to deliver and develop it current boxing programme in schools.

  4. In June March 2022 the Foundation was awarded a grant a Awards for All grant of £10,000 to help explore activities young people want delivered in the local area.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

During the year the charity received income of £28,997 (2021 - £51,241) and had outgoings of £43,948 (2021 - £53,967). At the end of the year the charity had funds of £75,358 (2021 - £90,309).

FUTURE PLANS

Since partnering with Empire Fighting Chance, the Foundation has started to develop a unique programme which they can deliver in schools. Taking inspiration from the Empire Fighting Chance Box Champions programme, the Foundation has now developed a similar programme tailored to their approach. The psychologically informed programme, delivered by coaches, runs for 25 weeks, and covers three half terms.

The Foundation has run a successful eight-week pilot of the of the new programme with a local secondary school. This is part of a multi-academy trust (MAT) that consists of two secondary schools, two primary schools and a sixth form college. It covers a large area of Sheffield which has a strong community, but which contains some of the most deprived parts of the city.

For the future the trustees would like to concentrate their efforts on the development and delivery of the programme to schools. The focus will be on the local MAT where the pilot was run and other local schools. A grant for £5,000 was won from the Sport England Together Fund and this has been used to deliver and develop the programme.

For a number of years the majority of the Foundation's activities were delivered at St Thomas'/Ingle Gym. The trustees have taken a decision to no longer base their activities at this location. There was a designated fund of £50,000 that had been set aside to help develop the Gym and pay for essential repairs. That fund will now be re-allocated to general funds.
