THE BRENDAN INGLE FOUNDATION
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
The Brendan Ingle Foundation was established as charity to continue and develop boxing trainer Brendan Ingle's community work. Since the establishment of St Thomas' Boys and Girls Club in 1963 Brendan Ingle worked tirelessly on a voluntary basis with socially excluded young people and has been instrumental in turning their lives around. This includes keeping them out of prison, being a key part of their rehabilitation post prison and coaching them in life skills to help them become better citizens. He was awarded the MBE in 1999 in recognition of his community work. In the process he produced 17 World, Commonwealth and British boxing champions. The Gym currently has 150 members with 85% from an ethnic minority background.
The aim of The Brendan Ingle Foundation is to address the needs of socially excluded individuals or those at risk of becoming socially excluded, by pursuing the following objectives 1) promoting social inclusion; 2) realising the needs of the socially excluded and 3) helping the socially excluded reintegrate into society using a combination of sport, mentoring, education and training.
From a more formal perspective the charity's purposes as set out in the company's objects contained in the company's memorandum of association are:
To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing people from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society, in particular but not exclusively by:
-
Providing facilities for sport and physical education with a particular emphasis on boxing and other active sports, and
-
Mentoring and education and training.
For the purposes of this clause "socially excluded" means being excluded from society, or parts of society, as a result of one or more of the following factors: unemployment; financial hardship; youth or old age; ill health (physical or mental); substance abuse or dependency including alcohol and drugs; discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, disability, ethnic origin, religion, belief, creed, sexual orientation or gender re-assignment; poor educational or skills attainment; relationship and family breakdown; poor housing (that is housing that does not meet basic habitable standards); crime (either as a victim of crime or as an offender rehabilitating into society).
On Sunday 21st March 2021 Alma Ingle a trustee of The Brendan Ingle Foundation and the widow of Brendan Ingle died after a short illness.
Alma was a person who helped transform the life of her husband. Her impact on Brendan cannot be underestimated. Brendan, who suffered from dyslexia, left school being barely able to read. He had not enjoyed the majority of his time at school and left with very little confidence in his abilities. He moved to Sheffield in 1958 from Dublin for work and met Alma at a jazz club on London Road Sheffield. On many occasions he would recount how he fell in love with Alma on that first meeting and set his heart on marrying her. To him, meeting Alma was the most significant moment in his life. At the time Brendan met Alma, he was an amateur boxer whilst at the same time worked in a Sheffield steelworks. Prior to meeting Brendan, Alma knew nothing about boxing but soon fell in love with the kind-hearted Brendan. She helped Brendan improve his reading and gain confidence in his abilities. Reading and education became his hobby and passion alongside boxing. She also enabled him realise his potential to succeed in life and apply his compassion and commitment to help others.
Alma also became involved in the sport of boxing. She became one of the first female amateur boxing judges and in later years one of the first female to be elected to a British Boxing Board of Control divisional committee . She was highly respected within both amateur and professional boxing and made a positive impact in what was at the time a male dominated sport.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2021
Her work and commitment to The Brendan Ingle Foundation was significant and she provided us, the trustees, with wise guidance and was totally committed to the charity's work. Both Alma and Brendan continue to provide inspiration for the trustees of the Foundation.
Set out below is an extract from an article which appeared in The Sheffield Star on Tuesday 23rd March 2021 and which provides more insight into the person that Alma was and the difference she made.
"Alma was also a major part of the success of Ingle Gym, which she worked in partnership with Brendan. The gym gained a reputation for not only producing champion boxers such as Johnny Nelson, Naseem "Prince" Hamed, Junior Witter and Kell Brook, but also taking as much care and time in turning around the lives of troubled young people.
They both created a family-like atmosphere and inclusive environment that continues until today and she did it all whilst raising five children.
Her eldest daughter, Dr Bridget Ingle has paid a moving tribute to the loved Alma.
She said: "We are devastated by the death of our mother Alma Ingle. In an era where women lost their jobs when they had children, she carved a place for herself in the boxing world alongside our father Brendan. Alma was a scientist with a brilliant mind. She worked as a metallurgist in Hadfields steel works before having five children. We were brought up to stand on our own two feet, make the best of what we'd got and get on with it. That is how she lived her life."
"Her cancer was rare and aggressive. She had the best cancer care through the Sheffield Teaching hospitals and in particular Weston Park. St Luke's hospice made it possible for her to have a good death. For that we will be eternally grateful.
"There's no point in crying about it now, she said when she found out it spread. So, we will celebrate her life by holding her values close and be treating everyone we meet as we would expect to be treated ourselves".

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
During the year the charity undertook the following projects:
During the year the charity undertook the following projects.
- Delivered a grant of £16,404 from the Sheffield Community Safety Partnership Fund. The project is called Fighting Back 2 and the grant was used to provide activities and support the victims or potential victims of hate crime and those suffering from poor mental health and was completed in March 2021. We focused on key groups such as ethnic minority women, and the Roma community. Programmes included
a. Getting more ethnic minority women to join the Ingle Runners women's running group and giving them individual coaching.
b. The Ingle Runners provided on line support for those experiencing poor mental health during the lock down.
c. Delivered women only boxing classes.
d. Delivered classes boxing classes at a Pupil Referral Unit.
e. Delivered lunchtime and after school boxing classes to a local primary school.
The project was impacted by the shutdown in November 2020 which meant we underspent on the original grant of £24,483 that had been awarded.
-
On 11 September 2020 the charity was awarded a grant of £1,600 from England Boxing's Tackling Inequalities Fund. This is to enable the Ingle Boxing Academy to buy equipment to enable it to put on boxing classes on the outside playground. This will enable the boxing club to continue to work with more young people whilst making sure the boxing classes comply with COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.
-
On 21 September 2020 the charity was awarded a grant of £5,000 from Yorkshire Sport Foundation's Tackling Inequalities Fund. This was for the Ingle Runners to adapt and expand its provision of classes to enable members of the running group to continue to train whilst complying with COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. The funding was spent on putting on more sessions and training up more run leaders.
-
On 10th December 2020 the charity was awarded a grant of £9,820 from Sport England. The project name is COVID-19 Return to Play and provided funds for the charity to restart its activities after COVID-19 lockdown. This project started to be implemented in March 2021. This work initially involved the delivery of additional outdoor boxing classes and as indoor classes were allowed additional boxing classes were put enable training to take place whilst maintaining social distance.
-
We received funding from the Violence Reduction Unit to deliver face to face and on line boxing and dance classes to young people who were at risk of getting involved in gang related activities.
-
The Ingle Runners continued to develop. We received grants of his year of £2,380 to train up more run leaders and to develop and deliver an injury prevention programme which included sessions led by a physio therapist and strength and conditioning coach. They also have an experienced triathlon coach who delivers a run improvement programme which includes interval sessions and running technique sessions.
-
for part of the year, the charity's employees were placed on the government's Job Retention Scheme ("JRS"). The charity was unable to deliver some of it's charitable projects and also had to protect the on-going financial stability of the charity. During the year the charity received JRS grant funding of £14,279. If the grant had not been received the charity would have had to fund the employees pay out of reserves or consider redundancies. The reserves that were protected will contribute to the delivery of future charitable activities.
-
We kept people involved and in contact through social media. This helped combat social isolation and loneliness. As restrictions were lifted they were able to implement their programmes in a COVID safe way.

FINANCIAL REVIEW
During the year the charity received income of £51,241 (2020 - £56,344) and had outgoings of £53,967 (2020 - £66,926). At the end of the year the charity had funds of £90,834 (2020 - £92,771).
FUTURE PLANS
The activities of The Brendan Ingle Foundation focus on 4 main areas:
Education - delivering The Brendan Ingle Scholars programme to local schools. Students take part in a boxing programme that delivers life skills and where they are mentored and supported to achieve improvements in behaviour and academic attainment.
Community Well Being - this includes activities to improve physical and mental well-being of members of the community. A significant part of this is the work of the Ingle Runners who combine running/walking programmes with peer mentoring and support. The trustees feel this is great example of "primary health care" that is led and delivered by a self-supporting group of volunteers, the majority of which are members of the local community. Members of the Ingle Runners also include a local GP who is the GP for the Sheffield Move More project and teachers and teaching assistants.
The trustees plan to send both our boxing coaches working in schools and run leaders on a mental health first aiders course.
Boxing - we support the Ingle Boxing Academy which is the Amateur Boxing Club that delivers boxing classes every day of the week and at all levels from beginner to competitive amateur.
Buildings and infrastructure - the trustees have set up a designated fund for the future development of St Thomas'/Ingle Gym at Wincobank Sheffield. This is the location of most of the charity's activities.
