Our new Transitsonal Minister, Revd Jonathan Edwards, stsrted his ministry wlh us on Easter Sunday. The first time hg was a￿e to personally condLKt a Servre was on 6 June. Wg hdd a Welcome seNic for him on 22 September. This was attended by representatives of all the denominations comprising our LEP. h)cal dergy, and members of thurch85 in the town centre. It was a joylul oCcaS￿n marking the start of a new thapter in Genlral Church's life. Jonathan quicly bègan meeting individuals in the congie9alion to fin(1 out %¥hat they fell aljoul the future of the church. He also started rneeling wrth other thTgy in th8 town and charitios who we r(￿ght be able lo work with in order to fulfil our charitable objectives wnore ￿lly. Our regular organist, CY Themi5 ToumpoLlidis. left to tske up a te%hiig post in Storohouse in Ihe summer of 2021. Fortunalety we found a new organist, Mrs Hannah Brooke, vho plays mo81 Sundays. We ar8 also gr8lefiJl to th8 following organists.. Ca￿1Yn Wallbank and Jgnny Pow1ey, who suppcrt us on occasional Sundays thfoughout thè yèar. Our Membèrship xl 31st D￿mber 2021 stood at 59. We also have a wmber of adherenl5 who are faithful attendees bul are not lull Members. Our aver8ga weekly attendance is 29 aduts. Unlorbjnately, whilst we a￿ in touch with numtrer of families, the children and teenagers have Lgrgèty ceased to attend. Ther¢ are a number of reasons for this but we are aware that many olher adivilies take pl8c£ on Sunday momings. Sadly. there have been three fvnera1s durirrfJ 20218nd a thurch member lthgd in India. Unfortunatèly, il was not possible lo hold som8 of our SFrfial services in 2021 such a5 Qur Church Anniversary and EasiÈr but wè were glad to be able lo start WOT8hipping together again at P•nt8cost. We were able to ce￿brate HaNe8t in Seplernber a lovely $eMce, when the was beaulifuly decorated by some of our rnemb8rs for the occasion. The chur( continuéd to be open so we were able lo worshii in person during the Advent Season, w? were able lo decorate the church with tra￿￿.￿n01 trimmings such as Ihe Advenl Wreath and Christmas Tree We were also able lo use our lovely, lull-srLed Nativity 8c•n• - which was w￿l￿alty made gèvèral years ago by members ol the congregation. and is ahyays much appreaated ty everyone. The fif$l s￿dBY in Advent saw the lightiw of the first eAndle and each successive Sunday anoth&r candle is l(t. Thts ojlnmnates on Chrislmas Day when Ihe Christ Candle bs lil. The Service of Lessons and Caiols is another much kved ser¥irE. and wè ware so pleased thal we were able lo hold this service and it was a joy to be able to sing carols this lime. Christingles wer9111 and each family h8d one to lake away th thèm. This service was followed by a bring and share meal. OLkr Christmas Appeal this year was for t￿ homeless. was donate(l thr￿gh Big Breakfast Plus. a charity vtho provid8 hol meals for those ￿eepIng mugh in Swindon a￿1 others in need. We had al￿aty started discussions Vlith them wrth a view to Ihern usiro our café fa¢ilii*s for this purpose. The Christmas Day collection w8s givèn lo Christian Aid. Christmas Presents for the Housebound and Ihosg m￿berS who have been bereaved during the past year.. Central Church always buys a present for Iho$o Members of our congregation who arv htsuseboLbnd and are no longer able to get lo church 8s they once did. Unfortunaloly, once again due the Covid restr￿tIOns, we we￿n't 8bl8 to hold some of our usual fundraising everrts throughout the year- such 8$ Christian Aid Big B￿akfast in May, of our twstee5 held 8 Macmillan Cancer Coffee Moming in her garden in September. Due to Corona Vifus restrictions in rotstion these did not lake place. In January 2021 we went into OUT third locktlowr and onc8 again Ihe ¢haplain$ had lo stop wsfong. Sheila and Marion continued working from home, popping into the offic• from time to time where rwssary. The chaplains havè bÈ keeping in touch wth their p&)ple as much as possib￿ by phone and email, and by sending the 0￿S￿nal card. We rx)ntinuÈd wth regu18r'Chaplains Chay se8sitins by Zoom so that wè could 811 see and talk lo eath other. We also had the occasional manager5, meeting by Zoom. Sheila continued 8ttending Zoom meetings with Work￿a￿ Chaplaincy Mission UK IWCMUKI. This ch8wity keeps a wealher eye on chaplainiie$ aixoss the courity. They also supply our d)8plains' insurance. Thar meétings havè bèen exploring various topics Induding th8 theology of djaplaincy and how to exeoJt• chaplairLy in a post covid world. Th8 m8etiThJs have been very h8lpthA. Sheila has featured on Wittshire Radio's Sunday morning programme. This helps lo raise profile wthin thè town. Sh also gives out Ihe cha￿aIn¢Y telephone number for anyone to conlact if ￿Y need to speak to someone in 1h8s8 diffi￿lt lines. Thi5 message is also on our social m&Jia pages and website. During th& 18St year, the ￿tall $e¢tor ha$ Suffered greatly. Many of the sho)$ were alrtsady faoxng difficulties, and covid W8s the fin81 nail in ihe coffin. Desprte evèrything we remain Op￿MISt1¢. We believe there has n¢v¢r been a greater need for the chaplaincy sewvir¢. Many membgrs of staff iri local shops are overwhelmed and in need of our support. The chaplains have been back out Ihere post lockdowm as much as they are able. SCC has also been exploring ways of reaching out lo non retail businesses in the bjiure. They have also been liaising With the Forgin9 Connections Group to explore ways of helping people in nee(1 in Sw'n¢Jon, or those who just need someone to talk to, via cafe hubs.
