Trustees' Annual Report for the year ended 31 March 2022

Bumba Foundation

The Trustees present their annual report together with the charity's financial statements for the year ended 31 March 2022. Legal and administrative information set out on page 2 forms part of this report. The financial statements comply with the charity's constitution and the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities 2005.

Structure, governance and management

The Bumba Foundation was established for education/training and the prevention or relief of poverty for charitable purposes by a Deed of Settlement dated 24 January 2012 and supported be a constitution which was adopted on the 04 October 2011 and amended on 24 January 2012. It is governed by a board of trustees who are each appointed for an indefinite period. Routine administration is carried out by the Secretary and Chairman, who informs and consults the other trustees regularly by email, letter and telephone. The board meets three times a year to review strategy, operational issues and financial performance.

If a board vacancy arises, it would be filled from a wide circle of active charity officers and trustees known to the existing trustees. New trustees are inducted into the organisation and its activities, policies and responsibilities, charity law and the organisation’s charity purposes.

Objectives and activities

The Trustees raise funds, hold the Trust Fund and the income therefrom on trust to apply them, at their absolute discretion, for the advancement of education, the promotion of good citizenship and civic responsibility and the advancement in life of young people so as to develop their full capacities and enable them to become responsible members of society and so that their conditions of life may be improved in Uganda and the North West of England with the aim to improve and increase community cohesion for the Public Benefit. They have power to retain the capital of the Trust and reasonable amounts of cash balances. They achieve their objectives by making grants to partner charitable organisations in Uganda and the North West of England (however currently this is only to organisations the Trustees have worked with in the past in Uganda).

Challenges

The past year has been a challenging period for the charity with the covid pandemic increasing the needs in Uganda but also reducing some of the traditional fundraising methods we have used in the past. We have adapted well to these changes, and with lockdown restrictions easing in Uganda and the UK, we were able to implement our annual fundraising dinner and re-establish our schools’ operations in Uganda in the second half of the year.

The communities we work with in Uganda were already ranked as one of the poorest districts in Uganda with some of the highest levels of poverty, unemployment, low education quality and high levels of illiteracy (23.8% of children aged 10-17 years are illiterate), however the covid pandemic has increased these needs further with reduced family income. This has resulted in 40% of the population in the district not having the funds for food, medical support, soap, clothing or any other necessities of life and more than 19% of the whole population survive on just one meal a day.

Charity Focus:

With so many unmet needs in Uganda, we are continuously working with the local community to develop new projects that will utilise education to reduce poverty and increase community engagement. Any projects we undertake have to be cost effective, have maximum impact and have long-term sustainability. The focus has been on developing the infrastructure and conditions for the community to address needs, which has resulted in the creation and development of two community primary schools, two vocational skills centres and community WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) programmes

Achievements:

This year we have achieved a number of important milestones, which has included the charity celebrating its 10-year anniversary, raising over half a million pounds for projects in Uganda and educating over 10,000 young people and community members since we were established. To support the evaluation of our projects, we created a short documentary which explored the impact of the work and how the projects are meeting the charities objectives and increasing community sustainability.

With the lockdown restrictions in place at the beginning of the year, we focussed our work on expanding our agricultural training centre and implementing a community education program. The project built on the learning from previous pilots and the investment in the demonstration garden infrastructures, which enable us to upscale the community education. The community educators developed community gardens and over the year, delivered 143 workshops which educated 1,624 young people and community members. The peer education methodology has increased the community’s knowledge and value of home farming and the effective use of simple irrigation initiatives, which has increased crop yields and increased self-sustainability.

With the covid restrictions easing in the second half of the year, we reopened our community schools with additional investment to ensure the schools were covid secure and also invested in new washing and sanitation facilities at our community schools under our WASH programme.

Trustees' Annual Report for the year ended 31 March 2022

The Statement of Financial Activities is set out on page 6. The Trustees' policy is to raise funds to enable them to carry out their charitable programme and continue to support the schools in the future. Funds raised totalled £56,098 and resources expended totalled £54,165 resulting in net incoming resources of £1,933. There remains a cash balance of £13,530 at the end of the financial year. The trustees consider that it is prudent to retain a cash balance of no less than £2,000 so that they are always in a position to pay modest grants and to cover any unexpected expenses that might arise.

This report was approved by the Trustees on 29th June 2022 and signed on their behalf by:
