The 2020 maize| |the circumstances|||of its||harvest was over 1,000,000tonnes short| |beneficiaries
and|||any wider||ofthe accepted minimum

Many Zimbabweans
were| |whole.|||||therefore
in a crisis situation
without| ||||||sufficient food to meet their daily needs.| ||||||The situation
was exacerbated
by the
Covid-19 pandemic
which hit people| ||||||living
in urban areas particularly| ||||||severely as it deprived
them of| ||||||opportunities
to participate
in the cash| ||||||economy. There was little evidence of| ||||||the major relief agencies working
in| ||||||Matabeleland
and the privations
ofthe| ||||||region were intensified
by the| ||||||corruption
which is endemic
within the| ||||||Zimbabwean
economy. The| ||||||Zimbabwean
dollar continued to lose| ||||||value against the American
dollar and| ||||||maize stocks within Zimbabwe
were| ||||||exhausted
by the end ofthe year. This| ||||||necessitated
the import ofmaize from| ||||||South Africa at considerably
inflated| ||||||prices.| ||||||A nearly new pick up truck had to be| ||||||purchased
in November
2020so that the| ||||||mealie meal distribution
programme| ||||||could be sustained.
We were also asked| ||||||to support the emergency
feeding of| ||||||very young children
by importing
a| ||||||product called ePap from South Africa.| ||||||Otherwise,
we remitted sufficient funds| ||||||to the team in Bulawayo to purchase 406| ||||||tonnes ofmealie meal —46%more than| ||||||in 2019,which was already a record| ||||||year. Pastor Albert Chatindo
is| ||||||responsible
for the vast bulk ofthe food| ||||||distributed,
supplying
10kg offood per| ||||||family per month to people in Gwanda,| ||||||Plumtree
South, Beitarid
e, Masvin
o| |Mazwi, Killarney,
Spring Farm and|| |---|---| |Heaney Junction. We also supplied|| |primary schools
in Lupane with mealie|| |meal when they were not closed|| |because ofCovid. As in previous
years,|| |20tonnes went to Hillside Methodist|| |Church for onward
