In the period 2020/2021 the hospital admitted 294 hedgehogs. We are proud to report the following data despite the disruption caused during the Covid pandemic. The success of this reporting period is credit to the staffing team and volunteers who continued to work hard during this time to ensure that high standards of welfare were maintained throughout the year.

In an unprecedented year, and with solo working in the Hospital due to strict Covid working restrictions, 294 hedgehogs have been cared for. A seamless transition to homecare for those well enough to be moved has been instrumental in achieving this admission count whilst adhering to a maximum Hospital capacity of 30.
What If?
If all the hedgehogs currently recorded as ‘Homecare’ and ‘In Care’ are released the total release percentage will increase from 42% to 56%.

42 out of the 60 ‘Not Sexed’ hedgehogs are still ‘In Care’. As the Hedgehog’s journey ends with us the gender can be updated and reflected in the totals above.

This is purely based on the approximate age upon arrival category. The above shows the release count and % of survival depending on the age category only.

This view does not consider the reason for admittance. Urchins have the greatest chance of survival, the same as last year. 42 files are still to be recorded and that will further define this picture.

By breaking the BCS totals for death (excluding euthanasia), down a step further and considering the admittance category shows:
Hedgehogs that are ‘Out During the Day’ (ODD), for BCS 1-4 are less likely to survive. This is the same view as year 19 to 20.
Work will continue this year to introduce the age upon arrival into this matrix.
From this view, standard treatment plans upon admission may improve the chance of survival i.e. always give a certain % deficit of s/c fluids suitable to the BCS. Suggestions can be put forward to the HH Vet for consideration.

Report of the Trustees (continued)
3.1 Staffing
SWCC employs a Hospital Manager and two part-time Welfare Assistants. Volunteers are continually recruited and trained to maintain the hospital on a seven-day/week basis, with an out of hours phone service available to the public.
3.2 Release Programme
At the time of reporting, 123 hedgehogs were successfully released back to the wild.
3.3 Hedgehog Scientific Advisory Board (HSAB - Research)
The SWCC Hedgehog Hospital has continued to support student research projects by offering our data for desk studies.
Research in the reporting period includes:
- Georgina Hopkins:
The aim of this research is to find out what the main clinical reasons are for hedgehogs being presented to veterinary practices and rescue centres in England and if there is a relationship between these clinical reasons and the hedgehog being able to be released following treatment.
- Lydia Michaelides:
The aim of this research is to survey and record the endoparasite species present in British hedgehogs entering wildlife hospitals. To ascertain the prevalence and burden of infection of these parasite species in these hedgehogs. To assess effects of habitat at rescue and previous antiparasitic treatment (and if available sex, weight at rescue, and time in captivity) on prevalence and burden of infection of each endoparasite species.
- Luke Yates:
The aim of this reasearch is to pinpoint exactly what parameters make a hedgehog likely to survive a rehabilitation attempt, and which specifically are the most important influences. Using records of 500 hedgehogs admitted to SWCC Hedgehog Hospital between the 1[st] January and 31st December 2016, the impact of several variables, including body condition score, weight, and burden by both ectoparasites and endoparasites, will be investigated on the outcome of rehabilitation attempts of admitted hedgehogs, be it death, euthanasia, or successful release.
All SWCC Hospital data, dating back to 2012 was sorted and filed in the Hospital Loft.
3.4 Hedgehog Helpline
SWCC staff man a hedgehog helpline.
4. Website
The SWCC website (www.swccharity.org) was updated in 2020 during the Covid lockdown to incorporate an educational area for children and schools (EDUCATION CORNER), and an information area for rescue and general hedgehog care (ADVICE).
5. Fundraising
5.1 Grants and funding
The committee continued to meet virtually during the pandemic to discuss grant applications and possible fundraising events. Regular fundraising event days were postponed for the year in line with government guidelines.
Grants were applied and received from:
-
Animal Friends Insurance
-
Dead Happy Insurance
-
Jean Sainsburys Animal Welfare Trust
-
MS Rickard Animals Charity
-
Zoological Society of Hertfordshire (Paradise Wildlife Park)
And after the year end:
- The Jack Patston Charitable Trust
Funding was also received from:
-
South Cambridgeshire District Council
-
CAF
-
Marshalls
-
Gift Aid
-
Via private donors on Virgin Media and JustGiving
-
Via private donors on Amazon, PayPal
5.2 Hedgehog Ambulance
Buckingham & Stanley Group – MG and Subaru Cambridge, have continued to donate, tax and service the use of a vehicle to be used as an ambulance for collecting and releasing hedgehogs.
6. Media
The SWCC Hedgehog Hospital continues to receive good media coverage, and SWCC staff and volunteers maintain a successful social media presence.
7. Education
An educational section was added to the website: http://www.swccharity.org
8. Community
Community plays a large part of what we do, with training volunteers and students to help with the hedgehog programme and advising people on making gardens wildlife-friendly.
This work was restricted in 2020 in line with government covid guidelines. However, the programme was able to deliver some virtual tours of the projects, in addition to virtual talks given to groups.
The Trustees and staffing team also facilitated a local group in initiating the start of a hedgehog friendly community group.
*COVID-19
The Hedgehog Hospital closed to the public on 21[st] March 2020 on government advice in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic. The programme was moved to off-site satellite carers and staff. The three members of staff remained employed during this period. When restrictions were lifted the programme moved back into the hospital and lone working resumed with a limit on admission capacity to safeguard the welfare of staff and hedgehogs.
