## _**MISSION**_

## _We seek to see young people’s lives transformed by Jesus._ _**ABOUT US**_

Newham Youth for Christ has been working in the borough since 2012. Our charity aims to positively impact the lives of young people, churches, the community, and schools. We work with approximately 1000 young people every year, helping them to encounter Jesus and grow in their Christian faith. We also provide young people with the support they need for their personal development. In addition to this, we empower churches to deliver youth work and assist schools in ensuring safety through our anti-knife crime prevention programs.

_**But seek ye first the Kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be added**_ . _**unto you. Matt 6:33**_

God’s faithfulness to us is, and has been, a great source of blessing as we have faced the challenges of 2022; not least in having had to say goodbye to Simeon B our Centre Director for his tenacity and creativity through a very difficult period for youth work. Also, to long standing and very valued administrator of 6 years, Keith D toward the end of 2022. Kwaku terrific youth worker had left Nov 2021. Their departure and the ever-increasing number of funders no longer able to offer grant support had indeed left a formidable challenge to the future work of Newham Youth for Christ (NYFC).

Lana R, NYFC Centre Director since April 2022, has done a fine job of facing this challenge. Pulling together some 17 volunteers by the end of the year, she managed to support and develop the youthwork of two Newham churches whilst developing NYFC workshops and, also organizing borough wide events for Newham’s youth population. A Barbeque was held with 27 church leaders and youth workers in attendance to explore future vision and working. For the second year now NYFC has also worked with other Christian faith charities to deliver a project to local primary/secondary schools aimed at tackling knife crime and its effects; this being completed with positive feedback from all the schools taking part.

Although NYFC was blessed with another substantial grant in 2022, the year proved increasingly difficult to secure such support; we look to God always as our true Provider for His work in the coming years.

I would like to thank Simeon, Kwaku, Keith and Lana for all their efforts under such trying circumstances. Also, I would like to thank all the volunteers working with NYFC at various times throughout the year for their faithful support. I give thanks with much gratitude to the trustees for their unwavering dedication to this charity and its work. Their experience and sound advice have in no small measure contributed to the future work of NYFC. **Nigel Weekes,Chair**

_**Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning, great is Your faithfulness.’ Lamentations 3:23**_

Many things have changed in the past year; we have journeyed through the worst of COVID (which remains with us), we have said goodbye to our longstanding administrator, we have appointed a new Director and at the time of writing, we are settling into new premises. In all this upheaval, one could easily be consumed by the challenges. However, we continue to move forward with great anticipation about what the Lord is doing in Newham, knowing that he remains faithful. As God is faithful, we are also called to be thankful for the faithfulness and generosity of those who support Newham YFC financially. As in previous years, we rely heavily on grants, which make up 60% of our income, with donations from churches and individuals providing most of the remainder. It is hoped, going forward, that the split of income will be skewed further towards individuals and churches, to form more of a consistent foundation for the invaluable work with do with young people in Newham.

I want to extend my personal thanks to the efforts of Lana Reid, our Director, who has journeyed through the challenges of this year through hard work and dedication, particularly taking up additional administrative and financial responsibilities. Thanks also to the Trustees, particularly our chair Nigel, who has taken a more active role through the challenges of 2022.

_**Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21**_

I was thrilled to become the Centre Director in April 2022. The wise Chandu Christian once told me, "Don't worry, out of fragility comes resurrection!" This phrase has been a source of strength for me. Before I started, the two frontline workers had left the charity, and on my first day, my remaining colleague indicated that he had other plans. I'm grateful to my former colleagues who worked hard and left a solid foundation. I would especially like to thank Simeon and Keith for their outstanding contributions to Newham Youth for Christ and the guidance and support they provided.

Newham has many Christians who are eager to help young people and work hard to achieve that goal. Our Christian community is passionate about sharing the gospel through words and deeds. This year, Newham Youth for Christ received a lot of local support when we needed it, and I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for their support. Unfortunately, there are too many wonderful people to mention here. In short, I'd like to thank my Trustees, Nigel, Dave, and Jeremy, for their leadership; Mope, our sessional youth worker, and all the faithful volunteers for their valuable contributions; British Youth for Christ, my Counsel of Reference, as well as the Newham churches, our prayer warriors, and our strategic partners, including Faith in Schools. Our work is only possible because of our funders and donors, and I thank them for their generosity in keeping NYFC afloat during the financial crisis.

Crucially, I'd like to thank the young people. It has been a pleasure and a blessing for NYFC to journey with you this year. We've read the Bible together, prayed, worshiped, ate, played, and worked together. It's been incredible to see many of you grow in faith and develop your gifts. I'm particularly proud of the 50 peer influencers who were trained through the What's The Point program, who are striving to tackle knife crime in their community. It's my pleasure to update everyone on our progress, as follows:

## **STREET WORK**

We conducted ten outreach street work sessions this year, meeting approximately 300 young people. Through street outreach, we raised the profile of the Gospel with young people, promoted Newham Youth for Christ’s projects, sign-posted young people, and gained valuable information through our survey. Workers from Ridley Christian Centre, Woodgrange Baptist and Memorial Community church worked alongside Newham Youth for Christ workers and volunteers. Below is a small Team leaving for outreach in Forest Gate, from right to left, our NYFC volunteer Sharon, Centre Director Lana with Annmarie and her husband Pastor Tim from Woodgrange Baptist Church

Over the course of three months, NYFC supported Memorial Community Church in conducting a summer program for seventeen young people between the ages of 13 and 23. The program included various activities such as drumming lessons, badminton, table tennis, and chess. Following the program, the participants gathered at the Welcome Centre to share barbecues and testimonies about Jesus with prayers.

_**‘This is amazing opportunity to learn about God and have so much fun.’**_ **Young person, aged 18**

## **WOODGRANGE DROP- INS**

NYFC developed the Woodgrange drop-ins in partnership with Woodgrange Baptist. The age range attending was 8-12. Twenty children attended, and the vast majority were new to the church. Although the age range was lower than expected, we received the children gladly in line with the scriptures. The age range was particularly apt as the new pastor was a former primary school teacher. The club grew weekly. At the time of writing, the majority are now 11 plus and continue to grow with NewhamYouth for Christ and Woogrange Baptist Church.

**WHAT’S THE POINT** _**‘I Learnt peace and not revenge.’ Learner.**_

The ten-week anti-knife crime program, which has won awards, aims to educate, and empower young people to change the culture of youth violence. The program was developed by Oxygen and coordinated by Faith in Schools in Newham. The program includes various interactive activities and guest speakers, such as victims of knife crime, ex-gang members, Street Doctors, Police, and a trip to the Ben Kinsella Museum. Last year, Newham Youth for Christ facilitated this program in five primary and secondary schools. Ten peer influencers were trained, who gave assemblies to 550 young people. The assemblies ended with their year.

**CHURCH SUPPORT AND NETWORKING** Newham Youth for Christ organised a summer barbecue this year at Memorial Community Church to show their gratitude to church youth workers in the borough and to foster future partnership working. The event was attended by 27 church leaders and youth workers, all of whom had a great time. Additionally, Newham Youth for Christ provided support to church youth work by supplying camping equipment for residentials, youth club equipment, and offering consultancy support and advice. **ACCESS**

Access is our flagship youth worship event for young people up to the age of 18 years. Young Christians and their friends come together at this event to enjoy fellowship, fun, and food. A central part of Access is the live worship music by the Access Youth Choir. Also, there are guest speakers and games, including sumo wrestling. We also provide free refreshments. Over a year, approximately 17 volunteers supported the NEWHAM YOUTH FOR CHRIST program.

TRUSTEES REPORT For the year ended 31 December 2022

The Trustees present their report and accounts for the year ended 31st December 2022

The accounts have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in the notes to the accounts and comply with the Charities Act 2011 and the SORP (FRS102) "Accounting and Reporting by Charities" effective from 1st January 2019.

## DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY

Our vision and values shapes all the work we do as Newham Youth for Christ. They help evaluate our work and enable us to think through how we can develop and grow new areas of our ministry.

## STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT

Newham Youth for Christ is a charitable organisation established in 2012. The charity is organised and governed under its constitution dated 1st November 2011 which sets out the objects and powers of the charity. The charity is managed by its trustees, who in partnership with the Centre Director are responsible for the overall vision, finance and running of the charity.

## RECRUITMENT AND APPOINTMENT OF TRUSTEES

The trustees of Newham Youth for Christ are responsible for the strategic direction and policy of the charity. The trustees give their time freely and receive no remuneration or other financial benefits. The trustees seek to ensure that the needs of work are appropriately reflected through the diversity of the trustee body and seek to identify potential new trustees through the work they are doing.

## INDUCTION OF TRUSTEES

Potential new trustees meet with the Newham Youth for Christ Centre Director and/or the Chair of Trustees. An overview of the charities work and the rights and responsibilities of being a trustee are provided at this meeting. The potential trustee is then invited to attend a number of Trustees meetings as an observer. After this, the existing trustees formally vote on the suitability of each candidate as a trustee and once accepted can thereafter function on the committee as trustees.

## RISK MANAGEMENT

The trustees have overseen a review of the major risks to which the charity is exposed. The trustees have assessed the charity’s main risk as a reduction in funding from all sources and a strategic plan has been put into place to deal with this issue. All other risks are reviewed regularly and procedures put in place to mitigate the risk to the charity. In addition to the above all prospective employees and volunteers undertake a DBS check (Disclosure Barring Service check)

## ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE

The trustees meet together 4-6 times a year and are responsible for the strategic direction of Newham Youth for Christ and the activities undertaken by the charity. The day-to-day management of Newham Youth for Christ is delegated to the Centre Director who is also responsible for ensuring that the team continues to develop skills and working practices in line with best practice. This is monitored through regular supervision meetings and annual appraisals which are carried out for staff at every level

in the organisation. The organisation also has a Council of Reference from whom the Centre Director and Trustees seek advice on vision, strategy and day-to-day matters. Newham Youth for Christ is almost completely dependent on our many supporters, partners and partner churches for funding and prayer support. We also rely on our large team of volunteers and associates who work alongside our dedicated staff to help us deliver high quality youth events. We are very thankful to everyone who has contributed time, prayers and money to the work of Newham Youth for Christ over the past year. In doing so you have enabled hundreds of young people the opportunity to respond to the Gospel.

## STATEMENT OF BENEFIT TO THE COMMUNITY

As a registered charity, and in line with the requirements of Section 4 of the Charities Act 2006, the staff and trustees of Newham Youth for Christ acknowledge that:

- ★ These benefits are related to our aims.

- ★ These benefits are clear.

- ★ These benefits are not the cause of any detriment or harm.

- ★ The aims are appropriate to the beneficiaries and vice-versa.

- ★ Our work does have an identifiable benefit to those we work with.

- ★ The opportunity to benefit from our work is not unreasonably restricted to geographical restrictions, or by the ability to pay any fees charged.

- ★ People in poverty are not excluded from benefiting from our work

## FINANCIAL REVIEW 2022

This has been another year of financial change. Our desire and plans to push on in trying for a greater reliance on funding from individual givers and churches, aiming for a more stable financial plan was totally impacted and hindered by COVID 19 in 2021 and the ensuing lockdowns and restrictions. We saw our reliance on funding from grants and trusts rise markedly on the previous year to 59.5%(2021 36.2%) of our total income. Whilst acknowledging our on-going reliance on the generous funding we receive from our various grant and trust partners we aim to continue to strive to work towards a growing support and investment in the work and aims of Newham Youth for Christ from individuals and churches on a local level.

## PRINCIPLE FUNDING SOURCES

Newham Youth for Christ is funded through a combination of both one-off and regular donations from individuals and churches as well as grants from charitable funds. In 2022 we received £17,446 (2021: £22,756) from individuals and churches through donations and regular and/or one-off gifts. We received grant based funding of £10,000 from Joseph Rank Trust in 2021 and 2022, £12,000 from Bill Hill Foundation, £525 from Synergy in 2022 (2021 £400) and £3,890 from Newham Council (2021: 4400) specifically for the “What’s The Point?” project core costs and expenses. We are immensely thankful to all of these partners for their financial support and assistance.

## INVESTMENT POLICY

The charity has no long-term investments. All our money, including any reserves (see below), is kept in our bank accounts held with CAF. RESERVES POLICY

In 2015 Newham Youth for Christ started a reserves account where currently £200 is deposited monthly as we build towards having enough in reserve to cover 3 months basic running costs (currently estimated at approx £15,000). On 31st December 2022,

PAGE 9

Newham Youth for Christ held £15,165 in unrestricted reserves in an account with CAF Bank.

PLANS FOR FUTURE PERIODS

The charity plans to continue the activities outlined in this document in the forthcoming years subject to satisfactory funding arrangements. The trustees intend to continue focussing on developing additional sources of funding and maintaining the charity’s links with its partners and major grant donors, ensuring that the charity’s standard of service is maintained and improved to meet its beneficiaries and its donor’s requirements.

## **Independent Examiner’s Report 2022**

## To the Trustees.

I report on the accounts of Newham Youth for Christ for the year ended 31[st] December 2022 which are set out in the following pages.

## **Respective Responsibilities of Trustee and Examiner**

The Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011, “the 2011 Act”, and that an independent examination is needed.

Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:

- Examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act.

- To follow the procedures laid down in the general directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act: and

- To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner’s report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you the Trustees concerning any such matters.

The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’, and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

- the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
