## **British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging/British Society of Cardiovascular CT Trustee BSCI/BSCCT Trustee Annual Report 2021-22**
**The objectives of the society are to:**
- Promote the highest standards of practice of cardiac imaging in the British Isles
- Promote education, training and the dissemination of scientific evidence in all aspects of cardiac imaging
- Advise the Royal College of Radiologists and the British Cardiovascular Society on cardiac imaging
- Nurture and evolve the links between the cardiology and radiology communities and the patients we serve.
The Society has shown continued growth, reflecting the hard work of its trustees and many of its members. In addition to our annual scientific meeting held in Bath, we co-sponsored a State of the Art meeting with the international Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography, and an additional meeting dedicated to the field of congenital imaging. The BSCI/BSCCT has continued to grow its repository of online educational content for members of the Society, and provides access for our trainee members to a repository of cases that allow them to easier meet the training requirements set out in the Royal College of Radiologists and Royal College of Physicians curricula. The BSCI/BSCCT has also contributed speakers to a number of other conferences this year. The main achievements of the Society are as follows:
## **Guidelines, Standards & Research**
- We have worked in collaboration with the British Cardiovascular Society, British Society of Cardiovascualar Magnetic Resonance, British Society of Echocardiography, and British Nuclear Cardiology Society to produce the “'United Kingdom standards for non-invasive cardiac imaging: recommendations from the Imaging Council of the British Cardiovascular Society' setting out best practices and training standards in cardiovascular imaging, published in the journal Heart in 2022.
- The BSCI sits on the British Heart Foundations Clinical Research Collaboration ensuring representation of cardiovascualr imaging on the nationwide research agenda. Our Research leads have been involved as grant reviewers for the pump priming grants sponsored via the BHF which aim to fund the earliest stages of research where larger projects are being planned but require pilot studies or priority setting exercises within the UK community to better design the study and position them for greater likelihood of success in future grant applications.
## **Education**
- The annual scientific meeting was held in Bath, attracting over 300 attendees. The meeting was preceded by dedicated course for Level I cardiac CT training, and a dedicated course for Radiographers.
- In collaboration with SCCT, the BSCI held a ‘state of the art’ meeting in Edinburgh in January 2023. This was attended by delegates and speakers from every continent bringing cutting edge knowledge transfer and education to our members.
- The Society arranged a day of lectures and cases in May 2022 dedicated to congenital imaging – typically under-represented in most major meetings.
- BSCI continues to host and record monthly webinars on a variety of imaging topics, presented by a range of excellent speakers (https://bsci.org.uk/webinars/), with these available on our moodle platform for those unable to attend at the time of the meeting itself.
- The RCR Travelling Professor in Cardiovascular Imaging programme has travelled to multiple sites in the UK, taking great efforts to include Cardiology and Radiology trainees at all sites.
- The Society has extended its partnership with the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography to subsidise and deliver online Level 1 Cardiac CT training to UK cardiology and radiology trainees.
## **Accreditation**
- The accreditation application process is now entirely electronic and has been running successfully for two years now. It replaces the previous application process which involved emailing the required documents to the secretariat.
- The application criteria and instructions with the required links are comprehensively provided on the website.
- The online process allows the applicant to log in to application portal where they can upload the documents into each domain. Further instructions are provided in the portal for the applicant's viewing. This has allowed the process to become more streamlined. Review of applications by the accreditation team is also more efficient through the online process.
- The numbers accrediting has risen reflecting the growing use of cardiovascualr CT in clinical care, with 95 members accrediting in 2022, compared to 73 in 2021 and 71 and 82 in 2019 and 2018 respectively.
## **Trainee Committee**
- Cardiology and Radiology trainee representatives continue to sit on the Executive Committee, representing the interests of Imaging trainees to the Society.
- Trainee Committee meetings have continued electronically.
- The Trainee Committee also provides ongoing contributions to educational content for the BSCI website (Image of the Month, Podcast interviews) and public engagement with the society via social media.
BSCI/BSCCT has stable membership over the last year. In 2022, the Society comprises 694 members; whilst 64 members chose not to renew their membership in 2022, 154 new members joined the Society in 2022.
The Society has incurred some losses as a hangover from the Pandemic due to the Society freezing sponsorship fees but rising costs due to a combination of inflation and increasing membership meaning larger venues are now required for the annual meetings. We are redressing these issues in 2023. Nonetheless, the Society remains in a financially robust position to deliver the societies aims.
