British Society of Cardiovascular Imaging/British Society of Cardiovascular CT Trustee BSCI/BSCCT Trustee Annual Report 2020-21
The objectives of the society are to:
-
Promote the highest standards of practice of cardiac imaging in the British Isles
-
Promote education, training and the dissemination of scientific evidence in all aspects of cardiac imaging
-
Advise the Royal College of Radiologists and the British Cardiovascular Society on cardiac imaging
-
Nurture and evolve the links between the cardiology and radiology communities and the patients we serve.
The Society has had significant constraints over the last 18 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Spring Meeting, planned to be held last year in Keble College, Oxford has been deferred until September 2021. In response to the lack of in-person events, the BSCI/BSCCT has now created a substantial repository of online educational content for members of the Society. The BSCI/BSCCT has contributed speakers to a number of other conferences this year, almost all of which have been conducted virtually. Despite the effects of COVID-19, the Society has had a successful year, with the main achievements being as follows:
Guidelines, Standards & Research
-
The Research Subcommittee audited the membership to identify Research priorities in cardiovascular imaging . This was published in Open Heart in October 2020 (https://openheart.bmj.com/content/7/2/e001389).
-
The BSCI partnered with the British Society of Thoracic Imaging to produce a guideline document on Reporting incidental coronary and cardiac calcification on non-gated thoracic CT . This was published in the British Journal of Radiology online in October 2020 and in print in January 2021 (https://www.birpublications.org/doi/full/10.1259/bjr.20200894).
-
The Standard Committee led a National Audit in invasive downstream testing after CT coronary angiography following NICE CG95 (2016) [registration ref: CA_2017-18-191]. This was published in Open Heart in February 2021 (https://openheart.bmj.com/content/8/1/e001597).
-
The same audit data was also used to explore sex-based inequalities in the management of stable chest pain . This was published in Open Heart in June 2021 (https://openheart.bmj.com/content/8/1/e001672).
Education
-
The Society has partnered with the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography to subsidise and deliver online Level 1 Cardiac CT training to UK cardiology and radiology trainees.
-
In collaboration with SCCT, the BSCI held a virtual BSCI/SCCT ‘state of the art’ meeting in December 2020. This was attended by delegates from every continent and allowed our industry gold sponsors to reach a global audience at a time where vendors and delegates were unable to attend the traditional in-person conferences.
-
The Society arranged a day of lecture filming in May 2021 in the Heartbeat education centre at University Hospital Southampton. This is available online to Society members and covers all
the didactic lecture elements of the level 2 cardiac CT curriculum that would ordinarily have been covered in face-to-face meetings.
-
BSCI continues to host and record monthly webinars on a variety of imaging topics throughout the pandemic, presented by a range of excellent speakers (https://bsci.org.uk/webinars/).
-
The RCR Travelling Professor in Cardiovascular Imaging programme has been reconfigured to deliver online teaching in lieu of in-person visits. It delivered virtual visits to Plymouth (18/5/21), Sheffield (29/6/21), and Southampton (27/7/21) plus the Society of Radiologists in Training Conference (13/7/21).
-
Overall, the BSCI now has a substantial repository of lecture material which will imminently be available to all members on the Moodle platform, allowing members to claim CPD points towards accreditation and re-accreditation requirements.
Accreditation
-
The accreditation application process is now entirely electronic and has been running successfully for over one year now. It replaces the previous application process which involved emailing the required documents to the secretariat.
-
The application criteria and instructions with the required links are comprehensively provided on the website.
-
The online process allows the applicant to log in to application portal where they can upload the documents into each domain. Further instructions are provided in the portal for the applicant's viewing. This has allowed the process to become more streamlined. Review of applications by the accreditation team is also more efficient through the online process.
-
The numbers accrediting has remained stable despite the COVID pandemic, with 79 members accrediting in 2020, compared to 71 and 82 in 2019 and 2018 respectively.
Trainee Committee
-
Cardiology and Radiology trainee representatives continue to sit on the Executive Committee, representing the interests of Imaging trainees to the Society.
-
Trainee Committee meetings have continued electronically.
-
The Trainee Committee also provides ongoing contributions to educational content for the BSCI website (Image of the Month, Podcast interviews) and public engagement with the society via social media.
BSCI/BSCCT has stable membership over the last year. Currently, the Society comprises 568 members; whilst 88 members chose not to renew their membership in 2020, 171 new members joined the Society.
The Society has incurred some losses due to the pandemic, mainly resulting from cancellation of the Annual Meeting in March 2020 and subsequent refunds to delegates. Nonetheless, the Society remains in a financially robust position to deliver the societies aims.
