Chairman’s Report on 2023

2023 was an eventful year for Central Church with different events taking place and some regular activities starting or re-commencing for the first time in a long while.

In March we hosted the Launceston Male Voice Choir and they gave a concert on the Saturday evening which was enjoyable and raised funds for the Church. This concert spilled over into the refreshments time at the end where a sing-song was appreciated by everyone. Many members of the Choir also joined us for Worship on the Sunday morning.

In April, we resurrected the Spring Fayre. We used to have a Christmas Fayre in December every year but have not had one since before Covid. They were a useful source of income for Central as well as being an event that everyone of whatever age or capability can take part in. The Trustees felt that Spring would be a good time to hold it as members were less busy. The Fayre was a success financially as well as bringing the Church together.

During the Spring and early Summer, Central prepared for an “Away Day”. One of the Trustees was given a vision that the Church should meet away from the premises and have a frank discussion about our vision for the future and what we thought God wanted for his Church at Central. April, May and June were set aside for themed preaching around the Bible Book of Nehemiah and what we could learn from his experiences of getting a message from God and carrying it through to completion when rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. Every day in June we all prayed the same prayer for guidance for Central in order to surround the Away Day in prayer.

The Away Day itself happened on the 1[st] July in a local hotel. Many members worked hard to rearrange their schedules to clear the majority of the day in order to attend such was the buzz and excitement that had been created in the lead-up. The day was in the most part a positive event filled with excitement at what God had achieved through us since Covid and what his plans were for us in the future. Much of the cost of the event was covered by a District Grant leaving only a small amount for members to pay.

At that Away Day, members were asked to give ideas, suggestions, dreams and visions as to what could be done in the future and a few of those ideas were realised before the end of the year. Some are still a work in progress such as the Solar Panels which many people suggested for our south facing flat roofed building.

One of the requests was the building should have a spring clean and paint. During two weekends, once at the beginning of August and the other in the Autumn half term, we cleared out a lot of rubbish that had been accumulated over the years and also Rooms 1 and 2 were decorated.

Other ideas from the Away Day that have come to fruition are:

Having pre-worship prayer each week. Room 2 has now been set aside for that function and worshippers are encouraged to have private prayer as they feel led.
Having a dedicated and comfortable Children’s Area which is open each week so that children attending our Worship feel included and part of the Central Family.

In September we also hosted the Callington Gospel Choir which was a lovely evening of praise.

In December, our Minister and three of our Supernumerary Ministers launched a monthly social event involving hymn singing, bible teaching, fun and games and of course food. The first one was

entitled “Festive Food and Fun”. This proved a success and these monthly afternoons are continuing into 2024.

Unfortunately, Central lost 7 longstanding members in 2023 and we mourned their loss. However, several new members have joined and Central as a congregation of worshippers has become more diverse during this time.
