Central Church Torquay – Chairman’s Report – 2021
2021 started in the same way as much of 2020 - in lockdown. Although this time Places of Worship were legally allowed to remain open, the Trustees took the decision to protect our members and join with the rest of the country in trying to prevent the spread of the virus.
We re-opened in celebratory style on Easter Sunday and it was a joyful occasion in which to not only rejoice in meeting our risen Jesus but also to meet each other again.
The lockdowns have brought our members and friends closer together and filled us with a real joy in being able to Worship our God together that perhaps was taken for granted pre-Covid.
In Spring and Summer, a few groups started to return but it was done in a slow, controlled way.
On the first Sunday in September, which was our Church Anniversary, we held a Songs of Praise because we wanted to praise God for bringing us safely through the pandemic and celebrate being able to sing in Church once again.
Following a successful Harvest Supper which everyone enjoyed so much, we started to introduce regular social activities often involving food of some description plus various activities and these have been popular.
In November, our Secretary, along with representatives from other Methodist Churches in the Circuit met a prospective new Superintendent Minister, Rev Jeff Short and part of the new Superintendent’s role is the oversight of Central. This meeting went very well and, for the Circuit Leadership and for our Secretary, he was number one choice. We have since discovered that the Torbay Circuit was Rev Jeff’s number one choice too. God moves in an amazing way!
In December we returned to all our usual Christmas Services that had been curtailed in 2020 as we welcomed Jesus born as a baby.
