Aiming Higher for the Disabled Community Trustee Report April 2020 to March 2021
The year 2020 to 2021, has been an extremely challenging year for Aiming Higher. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on every part of society.
As a charity, supporting extremely vulnerable families caring for disabled children, our staff team have been outstanding, creatively finding solutions to enable Aiming Higher to continue delivering services and activities to the Disabled Community of Blackpool and the Fylde Coast. Our soft play and sensory centre on the ground floor of our building in central Blackpool, became a distribution hub for resources that were distributed to families, (following COVID strict regulations), to enable them to join in virtual activities. This made a huge difference to the mental health, social isolation and many other negative issues that have surfaced as a result of COVID.
Our Board of Trustees, consisting of local business leaders and parent/carers, continued to support our staff team, enabling them to provide quality services, offering strong governance, bringing their business expertise to the board as well as the lived experience of the challenges and problems around raising a disabled child.
During this time, we were able to continue supporting our families through our Transformation Project, funded by The Big Lottery Community Foundation Grant and our Early years Children in Need Grant.
Families requesting help with housing, benefits, health, education and social care were supported, both virtually and, where absolutely necessary, face to face, allowed, as our staff are classed as frontline workers. Once again, all our support was carried out following COVID regulations. Blackpool is recognised as an area where social and financial deprivation are prevalent, and COVID has increased the issues many of our

families experienced and continue to do so. Through all this, our staff team have offered vital support that families have come to rely on, and our waiting list has increased significantly, an indicator of how much help is needed.
During this year, our fundraising abilities have been curtailed. However, we have been fortunate to have received funds from various sources, some targeted at supporting families during this time of crisis.
To name a few, Beaverbrooks, Slater Gordon, Glasdon and Asda all gave us donations. Bauer Radio, Vera Wolstencroft, The Respite Association. Lancashire Community Foundation, NHS Community Gift and TEMAX all helped to fund the extra support needed to help families and support the work of Aiming Higher.
In addition, Children in Need and The Big Lottery awarded us additional funding, specifically recognizing the additional needs of so many during these unusual circumstances. We were also awarded grants from the Rank Covid Recovery and Time to Shine funding.
Lancashire Magazine continues to support us. In addition to regular financial donations, the magazine publishes a monthly feature, keeping the readership updated with our activities and our gratitude goes to Natalie Christopher for facilitating this and continuing to support us in her role as Patron.
Our thanks go to everyone who has given us the support needed, that has enabled us to provide the much-needed services and activities that our families have relied on, even more than during “normal times”. In addition, we acknowledge that without all who give their time by providing maintenance to our building, volunteering their time freely and supporting us in a variety of other ways, Aiming Higher would struggle to deliver the vital services and help to families in Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre.

At the end of this financial year, we are still facing the uncertainties and impact that COVID-19 will bring in the coming year.
However, our dedicated staff team and volunteers will continue to assist the families that rely on our charity, delivering on the outcomes that we are committed to. With on-going support from our Trustee Board and local businesses and organisations, with funding from grants, sponsorship, donations and fundraising, Aiming Higher will provide the services that families so desperately need to help them face their challenges, no matter what the future holds.
On behalf of our families, our staff team, volunteers and Board of Trustees, thank you to all who help us make such a difference to the lives of families caring for disabled children and young people in the local area.
