Originally founded from an NHS outline that highlighted limited grassroots services that young people could access independently. The charity has evolved to become a youth focused charity dedicated to supporting young people and their families to enable them to overcome challenges and build towards their best possible futures. We operate from a main centre in Harwich and complement our delivery with a range of outreach programmes across Tendring, delivering a range of practical and emotional problem prevention strategies through a support service. As a community-based organisation, we provide a range of projects on behalf of young people within their community, offering 1-1 support, mentoring, youth led groups, after school programs and recreational programs. This three-year plan sets out how we intend to develop the mission of our charity. We aim to develop and grow our programs linking service delivery with income; recognising that we need to be realistic about the challenging funding environment and restrictions that the pandemic may place on our current and future operations. We have already adapted to an increasingly constrained funding environment through updating systems and implementing new technology to make a more efficient working environment. The historical lock downs and restrictions of the past two years has hastened this implementation, and we intend to continue to build on these foundations over the next three years of this plan. We have learnt to create programmes that adapt to the local demographics of the area and help to provide resources to those who are isolated by the rural location and seaside cultures that can influence local economies and limits opportunities for youth. We have always sought to respond to the immediate and underlying problems faced by young people in need in a timely and relevant manner, by developing programs that target early intervention. This key focus has proven to impact change, and by listening to young people at the first sign of their struggle, ensures their viewpoints are listened to building in help and opportunities at this stage has proven to lead to more resilient young people. We know that some problems our young people are facing have got significantly worse over the last two years. While new challenges are emerging, we recognise the added strain this is putting on families resilience. A future focus will be looking into this type of support either from linking with other agencies or building in a new program to address this gap. Again, most agencies provide higher tier interventions and we aim to remain a service that is involved at the early intervention stage. We don’t tell young people what do or change, often they recognise things need to change but do not know how to make this happen. By providing a space for them to talk freely and building their confidence into finding resolutions, we can help them to achieve their end goals. This then creates a picture of change that focuses on empowering the young person to make their own decisions which creates future resilience to problems solving in the future. 2 Annual Report 2020-21 ## **The Needs we are addressing** Evidence from Teen Talk services, government sources, and university and charity research indicate that poverty and poor mental health are becoming the two major factors which are having a devastating impact on the way young people manage their lives, and can affect their health and well-being. Poverty and deprivation - Tendring is ranked as the most deprived of all Essex districts, ranked 103[rd] of 354 authorities. 23 of Tendring’s 90 LSOA areas are in the 10% most deprived in Essex. (www.tendringdc.gov.uk) Mental Health - Rate of probable mental disorders have increased since 2017 in 2020, 1 in 6 children aged 5-16 were identified has having a mental probable disorder, increasing from 1 in 9 in 2017. The increase was evident in both boys and girls (Mental Health of Children and - Young People in England, 2020: Wave 1 follow up to the 2017 survey NHS Digital) We began to recognise the growing gaps where services in the area were targeted at crisis point and we started to recognise that by reacting promptly to young people facing difficulties early avoided crisis point and started to evidence a brighter future. Our uniqueness is addressing the needs of young people aged 11-25 in a personalised program so each is treated as an individual and their needs addressed in this way has evidence significant change. By providing a place, when a young person is facing a rough time, where they will be listened to and helped to find solutions so they can feel confident to express the way they feel in a safe environment is one of the important factors of our success. We consider the 3 main stages - Picking up transition from primary into secondary years - Supporting all through adolescent - Providing further support as they transition into young adults and services. As part of the Charity sector is seen as an increasingly important part of society in the delivery of services, grass root projects are far more reaching and effective due to the general local knowledge and expertise. Teen Talk is working to be reactive to address local needs as they arise. Covid-19 has enabled us to evidence this further by continually working in keeping young people connected to services during the pandemic. ## **Objectives** We continually see a significant increase in the numbers asking for help. We are always sensitive to the different needs of young people and focus our project in developing on what they tell us needs to be addressed or the type of help they need. Over the years we have learnt that the main priority is to create an informal space where young people can get the help they need and provide opportunities to further their ambitions. A range of youth led programs has been achieved by putting the focus on celebrating youth achievements, ranging from festival, campaigns, mentoring and community led projects that provide a youth voice. In the future we want to continue to build on this focus with our aim to introduce a better presence of youth representation on our board. 3 Annual Report 2020-21 We are now facing an ever-changing environment since the pandemic that has intensified existing issues and created new. Predominately loss of developmental skills of transition as young people have lost 2 years of social experiences that they would have had. This has led to the creation of higher tiers of anxiety and concerns for their future impacting their emotional stabilities. ## **Drawing from past experiences** Getting to know young people is important, offering services that are forward thinking in relating to young people by making it clear that we might not always get it right and they can lead and help us achieve a better way of working. Keeping our service individual to the young person will continue to be our main focus. We don’t want to fit them into a box, but ensure we treat them as an individual in turn, this helps them to feel comfortable in engaging in our services. Our priority of making sure we really listen to their concerns and help them lead the way in finding solutions. We know, youth work struggles to attract young people, especially those aged 15 to 19 years. We attract those that do not normally engage in the generalised provision and mostly relates to not feeling they fit in. At Teen Talk we help to find where they do fit in, by making them feel valued and what they have to say is important. Drawing from what we have learnt over the years to explore young people’s perspectives on participation into youth services. We know that certain activities attract young people into youth services, what maintains their participation is the sense of belonging they experience and the opportunity to participate meaningfully in decision making either in activities and developing a programme or to have a say in their own emotional health and be involved in the they ways it can be resolved. In this regard we need to continue to recognise and promote the value of their contribution. Although needs change and gaps appear in service provision, we recognise that the 3 challenges we will face in the near future and will continue to address: - Increase in disadvantage financial and demographical growing wider - Increase in mental health - Lack of opportunities especially within the lower income – keeping resources free and assessable ## **Service development over the next year** Teen Talk has started to rebuild on the core practice model since the pandemic, where we diversified services to address the need throughout. One main feature was introducing telephone support which we aim to consider formalising into future practise. Mainly as this improves the element for young people to engage from the rural aspects Tendring presents. Face to face support will continue as our main focus in reacting to the growing needs with an added element of providing a choice between these options or both. We feel we have successfully kept young people connected throughout the last 2 years and this achievement we aim to continue to develop and build on. Covid-19 has provided a learning and important message that we need to consider how we will evolve to ensure the focus meets the needs of young people and families in the changing future. ## **April 2020 to March 2021** 4 Annual Report 2020-21 ## **Statistics and what we achieved through remote working –** _further evaluation for the future is needed as this created a very different base line for work provided over the last 2 year during covid and will be part, we recognise that we will need to review the baseline measurements for future reference as services return to normal operations._ ## **Support** For this period, we worked directly with 157 young people providing weekly support sessions and one-off consultations through telephone support. Additionally, we also supported a further 178 young people relating to information of services, providing further knowledge of resources which we achieved indirectly through parents and other agencies. New to service increase by nearly 50% through this time which evidencing the local knowledge base of our services and awareness of the general public. We provided 693 Telephone support session with 84% engagement rate. The percentages are active and include the progress of closed and young people we are still working with and the current picture of achievement at year end. From building this base line in 2018 we are able to measure the impact made and the benefits to our services user's. For example, those that have achieved level at the start of their journey and level 5 at the end. This format also enables us to monitor each person progress and additional record the statements from the young person to create a case story for a more detailed report. Which we will continue to develop. Compared to previous year we are still seeing a growth in 11-13 age range by a further 25% and are starting to see more engagement in the 18+ age range. We consider that our charity name could impact this “teen” over this year we have continued to build stronger links with this age range and built on more target programmes that us help us improve our message to these service users and have achieved a 50% increase. We also hope that as we rebrand next year, we can focus on this further to improve knowledge to the upper age range of service users. 6 Annual Report 2020-21 A large proportion of referrals to our service are from schools. We are currently improving this area which will be achieve through our website next year to monitor self-referral and young people have a more direct access point which has change over the last year as the drop-in proportion of our service could not be offered during Covid-19. This is confirmed by the above where statistics are recorded from the young people evidences a high percentage of agencies highlight our service to young people and their families. 7 Annual Report 2020-21 The above issues represent the needs we are addressing in some cases young people will have multiple needs. Having someone to talk too and Anxiety has been the largest request for help, anxiety can destroy self-confidence and affects behaviour. It is common to avoid people and situations because of anxiety and the belief that you are not good enough. By breaking the cycle of anxiety through our support we have rebuilt lost confidence and improved their self-worth. Families and young people have been provided with a network of agencies and signed post to organisation who can provide these resources. However, during Covid we learnt to support parents as resources and delivery changed and continue to adapt over this period as different government restriction were in place. This also helped us to identify gaps for example coping with Covid and – isolation/ going out. We introduced a weekly postal activity that supported healthy wellbeing and kept young people connected. Which we can continue to monitor. 8 Annual Report 2020-21 ## **Activity Programmes** Not only did we have great success with our remote programmes we diversified to open up to the whole community through postal packs and the positive project to help people keep connected and provide provision. We felt it was important to extend the impact of our age group as many services were reduced leaving young people feeling venerable and isolated. Remote working enabled us to impact a wider audience mainly through promotions on social media, this statistic has led us to establish this more as a priority role for the future. During this period, we were able to diversify roles from other programmes which as normal services return will limit this but evidence the importance of the presence of social media. 9 Annual Report 2020-21 This year we included under 11 within our delivery as a one off, mostly this was to address where older siblings were engaged and postal kits were included to younger children. Our outcomes changed for this year for our activity programs and achievement we recorded on the purposes of engagement Level 1 = Engaged with online and postal programmes Level 2-3 = Engage in multiple online/ postal programmes and community projects as restriction eased Level 4-5 = Forming youth consultation panel Consultations including - _Youth Violence and Vulnerability- “Youth voices project” - Council for Voluntary Youth services (ECVYS)_ - _Lessons from Lockdown Community Asset Members’ experiences during the COVID19 Pandemic- North east Essex Health & Wellbeing Alliance – Active Essex Local Delivery pilot_ 10 Annual Report 2020-21 For this period, we introduced a wider measure of impact within soft outcomes and community Outcomes. Improving knowledge of service across Tendring. Receiving Postal positive packs or the unsung hero postcards were two of the projects we offered and helped to develop further programmes such as detached street-based work where we could measure (YP) Young people feeling safe, positive and healthy by gaining information and resources. In this way we were ensuring that activities were open to all and assessable even through lock down. One important message and the above outcomes demonstrates how we kept in contact with a significant number of young people during Covid-19 we were working directly or indirectly with parents. As our outcomes evidence we strived to keep young people connected. Through these programmes we were able to establish 7 soft outcomes to measure the quality of behaviours and demonstrate the success of the project and impact. ## **Summary** The Board of Trustees and the Staff at Teen Talk will continue to work tirelessly to secure the resources needed to maintain the organisation. Our focus on our young people, who are facing unprecedented challenges. We want to be able to help them on their journey through adolescence, so that they can gain the skills and confidence to become successful adults.
