SUNDON PARK BAPTIST CHURCH ANNUAL REPORT 2020

At the beginning of the year 2020, the Church continued to host a range of community events such as indoor bowls and Keep Fit, Tots and Mums, Rhyme Time and Singing Café which all took place until March 2020.

In March 2020, the church began to make regular adaptations to respond to the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

On 27[th] March 2020, a letter was sent to all church members and friends informing them of the suspension of public worship and access to the church until the Covid-19 restrictions were lifted. Sunday Podcast was prepared and sent out by Pastor Charmaine to all church members and friends.

In April 2020, Sunday services started to be held virtually via Zoom. Weekly Sundays podcast was sent to members and friends who were not able to access Zoom.

On 23[rd] April 2020, a letter was sent to all church members stating that our church meetings have been postponed until further notice due to Covid-19, and that members will be notified of any important decision that may require their approval. The church leadership began to meet remotely via Zoom and make decisions in the best interest of the church and community. Church meetings restarted in September 2020.

In June 2020, the church was opened for Private Prayer time for individuals and households.

The church services restarted in the Newns Building on 23[rd] August 2020. It was later suspended again in November 2020 and reopened finally in December 2020.

Beacon Groups

Beacon Groups met on the phone and via Zoom. Beacons of prayer group which started on 24 April 2020 met via Zoom every Friday to seek God together as well as praying for our community, country, congregation and wider issues. The Beacons of Prayer initially began in the period of Lent 2020 and continued for the rest of the year.

2020 Events

The events that were held during the year included a Harvest Quiz evening, Harvest Gift Day and Outdoor Carol singing/handing out gifts to the community held outside the church. Our Carol by Candlelight was held virtually via Zoom streaming to Facebook and YouTube.

Breakfast Battery Boxes

In December 2020, the church began an outreach programme called Breakfast Battery Boxes in association with Friends of Leagrave Park to provide Breakfast Battery Boxes for families in need of healthy breakfast options over the holidays. The Breakfast Battery Boxes took place on 21[st ] to 24[th] December 2020 and 29[th] to 31[st] of December 2020. We supported 35 households equating to 125 people.

Church Membership

On 18[th] October 2020, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Banson-Idun were welcomed into church membership.

Bereavement

On 11[th] March 2020, one of our church members, Betty Fraser sadly passed away. Betty’s funeral service held in the church took place on 25[th ] March 2020. Betty was a blessing to the church and her death was a great loss.

Leaders of God

Leaders of God which became fully operational in June 2018 continued to increase in number. However, classes were unable to take place after the month of March 2020 owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Pastoral Care Groups

The Pastoral Care Groups have continued to function by staying in touch with regular attendees by telephone as well as giving prayer support. This work has been especially important during the year 2020 because most of our members were experiencing isolation.

In March 2020, each deacon was assigned a group of people to keep in touch with and support with help from the Pastoral Team.

Calling a Minister

On 27[th] September 2020, the church members unanimously voted to call Pastor Charmaine Mhlanga as our Church Minister.

Christmas

During the Christmas period, the church supported Keech Hospice by having some of its members purchase a Christmas table arrangement made by Lesley Sturdy. The proceeds from the sale were given to Keech Hospice. We also delivered Christmas cards to the whole estate inviting people to our Christmas services. For the first time our Carols By Candlelight service was held virtually via Zoom.

Church Services

In 2020, we had more new people who visited the church over the year and others who regularly joined our services via Zoom. Some of whom continued to regularly attend our Sunday worship.

The services that were held in the church in 2020 had been subject to all the government guidance on the necessary health and safety precautions.

Through the year 2020, we were always finding ways to put our love into action by adapting to different ways to positively impact our community and by learning

new things we can take forward with us in our shared mission as a church to be a beacon of hope.
