Shops. Town Centr8. Cudworth and Wombwell.
Our shops should rai3e much needed funds that support us lo provide seNices and to lund our Infraslruclure. All
health and safoty requirements within OUT shop premises were maintained and up to dale and continue lo do so,
Age UK Barnslèy ¢xpressed sadness al the clo¥ure of thwr Wombwell shop in January 2024 duè lo seveTal factors
making11 unsustainable. Rising rent and utility costs. coupled with reduced footf811 in the area, mudè11 increasingly
challenging to mainlaln operations. We appre¢ialed the support Irom the communily, volunteers and slaff, offering
alte¥nallve localiolls lo continue wllh their role at Age UK Bamsley.
Access Barnsloy has been open to enable people lo collecl moblllty scooters and whe8l¢halrs.
Our Eldon Stro81 shop has played a cruclal rolg In supporting our ts¥o olher localions, Cudworth and Wornbwell. In
the first two qU8tleTS 012023, we experienced a decline in donallons across all Ihree shops. However, slnce Ihe
hlring of our Income geneialion manager in October 23, we have seen a signifitanl Increase In donations. Thls h38
allowed the Eldon Slreel shop lo dlslfibule exces$ stock lo other lo¢alions. While this offort wasn't enough to
sustain our Wombwell store. il has conlribuled to Ihe Ihriving success of our Cudworth shop.

Information & Advl¢e Servlce
The Inlormalion and Advice Service (I&A} is an accredited seNice holding both Ihe Age UK Information and Advlce
Quality Standard and the Natlonal Advlce Qualily S18ndard. This year, Ihe service conlinued lo encourage
appointments by lelephone or onllno to try and meet the in¢reas8d demand. However, visi15 to people al home have
been provided wherever necessary and Ihe servi¢e has seen an Increase to these home vlsils.
In the lasl year, the Information and Advlce Servlee has bean dellvered by a part-lime Manager, a parl-lime Deputy
Manager was also appointed In March 2023, three part lime Advlce Officers, a part-tim& Iralnee Advisor and two
voluni8ers. This SeNice Is free to those people Ihal use It. dèmand has fluctuated bul there has been a steady
increase lowards the end of the financial year whl¢h Is continulng into 2024 - 2025.
Warm Homes Advl$ors
Durlng 2023-24 we ¢ontinued to dellver our Waim Homes Checks {Sepl 23 - March 24). A total 01259 warm homes
vlslls and equipment were supplied Ifee of charge. lunded thiough ellher the Agè UK Warm Homes programme 165
and a lurth8T 94 were funded through th8 Household Support Grant from BM8C. Thls Is a popular servlce and has
supported the58 households to make beller use ol Iheir heallng 8y$tèm$ as well as fltting i18ms of Insulallon
equlpmenl to prevont draughls and reduce hèat loss.

Total Eslimaled benefil gains for 23124 were £1,900,IXg0 compared to £q.226,380 for 22123 a 54Yo Increase. We
have adV￿sed and worked with 2269 cllenls durlng 23124 (5423 client ￿ntactS) 8 6 ./• inGrea59 on 22123 figure of
2140 clients. Y8aT on year w8 have seen a signiflcanl increase in l & A service demand due lo the continuing C05t ol
living cri8is. Although we do try and promote telephone appointmenls for benefit work wheiever possible, we are
sèèlng an Increase In demand for home vlsits, whlch Impacts on our waillng Ilsl for appolntments, Telephone
appointm8nls are encouraged wherever possiblè as Ihis allows us lo assist more clients and at a quickèr pace.
Handypèrson & Gard&nlng Serrfic•s
In March 2023 we also devgloped a charged for servlce lor gardèning and handyperson dulles. The board reslrlcted
a notional £10,000 for 2023124 to ensure the success ol this new devalopm6nl whlch was a r8sull ol the number ol
enquiries for support we were receivlng from older people unable to secure a piovider for small garden lobs that
was reliable and reasonably priced.

need, The alm of the centré is to improve qu81ity of life, reduce isolation. promote wellbelng and offer respite to
carers.

The cenlre. after the relurblshmenl had a relaunch al Ihe end olApril 2023. Improvements lo the car parklbus drop
off area were completed. A decked outdoor area with seallng and gardenlng opportunitles was completèd In
Sepiember 2023.
In February 2024 the ¢enlie supported Maintenance Cognilive Stlmulallon Therapy Sesslons {24 week
programme>, whlch was followed up stssions by Barnsley Memory Servlce.

envlronm8nt. The Area Teams h8V8 been incredibly supportive right across the yeai again.
Wo are also exlremely grateful lo all Ihè local businesses that havè provlded us wllh goods and In-kind serv1¢6s that
have enab5ed us lo achieve so much over this year.

Age UK Barnsley's affordable shopping seNice continues to Nn using some addillonal funding lo support Ihé
service.

We ealllvisll for 8 6hopplng lisl and do Ihe shopplng, whlch Is then dellvered lo Ihe home and, wher&
needed, pul away in people cupboards.

Support an indivldual to shop on-line. working wlh Ihem lo overcomo the challenge5 and fears of digital
inclusion until they feel ready lo access these seNi¢es on their own.
This service is an extremely valued seNice that has more Ihan doubled Ils dient3 In Ihe18s1 year. Age UK Barn$lgy

Following Age UK Barnslevs delivery of the Barnsloy Older People Physical AGlivity Alliance (BOPPAAI pilol PTole¢l
from OGlober 2021. In December 2023 8arn$18y Council's cabinet members 8pproved plans to contraci 8 provlder
lo ¢onlinue growln9 the Alllance over the nexl three years to build on the success of the BOPPAA pllol prolect,
Following a Barnslèy Counc51 procuTement procÈ8s which look plac8 over January and February 2024, In March
Age UK Barnsley was pleased to announce that the charity will contlnue lo18ad Ihe BOPPAA over the next three
years. Age UK Bamsley wishes lo thank all our valued partners across thè BOPPAA lor the pari they played In the
delivery of the BOPPAA pllol project and looks foNard to conllnuing to work with partners Ihroughout thè next
phase of delivery ol the BOPPAA.

Malntènanco Cognltlve Stlmulatlon Therapy {MCST)
Age UK B8rnsley have dellvered two 24 week sesslons ol MCST to two cohorts of people experlenclng low level
memory problems. Onè In Penistone and one in Central Barnsley. These have bggn Ilnked through the Demgnlia
and Me group and lunding has beon located lo provide a further group session In the South area for 2023 - 2024.
Thls actlvity has had really positive outCOm85 for those attending In tems of wellbeing and m6n181 health jusl from
Ihe soclal and fun ol the odivilies Snvolved. There are proven addllional ￿￿0[115 in preventing cognitlv9 abilities,
Voluntaarlng
Over the year we have had 147 active formal volunteers Ihat gave thèlr tlm8 to support all the activities of Age UK
Barnsl8y. In addition, many more people have been mi¢ro-volunleers. l.•. informal volunteers who offer thèlr Ilme
and skllls on an ad hoc basls. We cèlebraled Volunl8ers W88k In 2023 by holding a celebralion event at our
Ellzab81h Aclivity Cenlre, provlding lunch and awafds.
Age UK Barnsley would not be able lo funclton wilhoul Ihe commilment and hard work of Its volunteers. Whatever
role our volunteers take on whether11 Is dlreclly In services or In thè shops that fund the seNlces, they are maklng a
masslve difference In Ihe lives ol older people in the Bamsley area.
Durlng Ihls ye8r the charity has conlinue<l to deliver Ils mlssion prlmarily through provlsion of Its key $eNlces foi
older people and Involv8menl In nèw projects.

The results for Ihe year ended 31 March 2024 show a surplus of £499 {2023 £106.750), after utlli$8llon of reslrlcl8d
Income which was recelved in prlor year 01 £110,889.
Age UK Barnsley has been successful in obtaining income for varlous new projècts, wilh Incomlno resourcès for thls
rinancial year belng £1.443,762 (2023.. £1,385.460).
The balance sheet al 31 March 2024 has liquld lunds of £478.566 held in cash and bank balance5 and nel assets of
£880.720, of which £705,231 is held as unreslricled funds. Duiing the financial year Ihe Trustees look the decision
lo place an element of Ils cash resetves in a cash managemenl system. Thls allows reserves lo be held on shorl
term deposils managing th8 best possible return.
During the year the Trustees have chosen lu create a designated 'services' fund, out of unreslricled reseNes, of
£200,0000. This fund has been crealed lo prolecl seNice$ Sn th8 event of a temporary fall In income that would
support the running Costs of dellvering such services whilsl allernallve funding arfangements were identified.

all key areas. including fire safety, health and safely, food hygiene and Infection conlrol. Rlsk assessments are
carrled out lor all 8clivitie$ and servlce8 lor older people, and all servlces slaff receive training In 8afeguaiding.
Where risks havè been Identified. aclion has bèen takèn to minimlse them. Comprehenslve insurance Gover has
been taken out for all argas ol aclivily which is reviewed annually.
We still maintain Ihe Age UK Charity Quallty Standard which is Independ8nlly 8SS8ssed by SGS. In addition we hold
the Age UK Infofmalion and Advlce Qu81ity Stand8rd and the National Advlce Quality Standaid.
Like many Ioc81 charlll8S, the main risks facing Agé UK Bamsley relale lo the potential for not achlevlng Inuome
largel$, elther through loss of ¢onlra¢ls or a ￿dUCtI0Th in grants.
The Iruslees have ex8mlned thé major $trale9ic, bu5Iness and operatlonal risk5 whlch the charlty faces and confirm
that systems have been established lo enable regular reports to b8 produced so Ihal necessary steps can be laken
lo lessen Ihese risks.

The past year has Seen a number of changes al Age UK Barnsley wlth a new management team and reslruclure
Ihal allows for succ98s1on plannlng, greater staff and volunteer care and support and many new prol¢¢l$, inilialives
and servloes.
We have beeome even more Innovative in deliverlng services throughout changing regulation8 and Indlvldual and
communlly needs.

supportlng us through donations of goods, money, and lime.

The Charity was established in 2011 as a company limited by guarantee with charitable status. On 2 Apfil 2012 it
acquired the enlire assels and undgrtaking5 of Age Concern Barnsley, a charity eslablished as 8n unincorporated
associallon in 1974. The goveming document under which the charity operates Is the Age UK England Standard
