## **WEST KIRBY FOTBALL CLUB SECRETARY'S SUMMARY 2020-2021** ## **Football** The 2020-2021 season continued the unsettled and chaotic path as the previous seasons, again exacerbated by the continuing COVID-19 Pandemic. Government national shutdowns, together with the Merseyside specific lock down in November and December 2020, saw very severely reduced fixtures played by our teams. The First team played 15, won 11 and lost 4, finishing 4[th] in the West Cheshire Division 2 – narrowly missing out on promotion due to teams moving up into the NW Counties leagues. The Reserves played 16, winning 6, drawing 1 and loosing 6 , finishing 12[th] The Ladies team won 0, drew 1 and lost 3, finishing 9[th] in the North West Regionals Women's Football League Division One South after the season was deemed null and void. Finally the u18 Girls team played just 6 games, winning 1, drawing 1 and loosing 4 in the Cheshire Women's and Youth League. Over the last seasons the total number West Cheshire League players has reached 163, with 24 ladies registered with the North West Regional Women's League and 20 U18 girls with the Cheshire Women's and Youth League. Discipline and charges from Cheshire FA totalled £688 and comprised: - 31 Cautions - 7 Sent off - 1 Misconduct charge. The cup highlight of the season was the achievement of the reserve team reaching the semi-final of the Wirral FA , eventually loosing 2-12 to Ellesmere Port Town the eventual winners. The season end saw the club say goodbye to the Girl's U18s after two COVID interrupted and truncated seasons. Two of the girls have remained with the club progressing to the ladies team with a number planning to move on to university. The number remaining being insufficient to continue with a team. Looking to the future the club has forged a link with Hoylake FC girls U14 team, who will play at West Kirby FC in the coming season with the long term aim of progressing to the next West Kirby U18 girls team. Season 2021-2022 will see the club with two men's teams in the West Cheshire League and the Ladies' team in the North West Regional Football League. ## **Team Management** Again the men's First team was subject to mid season manager changes. The season started with Dean Thomas in charge, moving to temporary management by Jay Stott and Liam Carson, before Ricci Neill took over. COVID and player changes saw the management move to Glynn Hurst before Dean Nunn finally took over until the end of the season. The first team remained in contention for the promotion places until the last three games of the season, ending up 4[th] in the Second Division. The Reserve team saw Jay Stott remain for the second season, Liam Carson stay with the u18 Girls team and Andy Jones remain with the Ladies team. With The FA ever tightening Safeguarding systems, the club has to ensure DBS, Safeguarding Children regulations and courses are adhered to for all coaches and committee members, as all U18s are counted as children. In addition the aim is for every manager, assistant manager and coach to have The FA Emergency Aid for Football Certificate. The West Cheshire League and the club provide funding for coaches and managers wishing to take courses. Once again team managers have been successful in obtaining sponsorship for new kits and training tops. Some tracksuits from previous seasons remain available – mainly because they not of the Nike or Adidas brands. Thanks again go to everyone who has been involved with the teams this season in what proved to be a most difficult season to complete. The hope is that with the vaccination programme and future common sense the next season proves to be more 'normal'. ## **Committee and Club Development** Thanks to Government initiatives, the club was able to access various grants and was successful in receiving the initial Government grant of £10.000 via Wirral MBC. Additional applications to the Football Foundation for the club house and starting up again after COVID ensured the club remained financially viable and that the pitch and facilities remained fit for purpose. The stuttering nature of the season saw only a core of the committee remaining in place. Lack of opportunities to meet face to face and the lack of actual football played a large part in the difficulties of recruiting more committee members. Zoom and Teams enabled a plethora of league meetings and extraordinary general meetings which enabled the seasons of all our leagues to be completed. Recruiting volunteers committing to the club remains a priority, but difficult. Many people express interest in becoming involved and are welcomed – but seem to loose interest quite quickly when the 'background' work that needs to be done proves to take up more time than expected or is a bigger administrative work load than expected. Trish Beck and Louise Grainger who represented the U18 girls team and were Welfare Officers resigned form the committee at the end of the season as the girls team disbanded after two years. This means that again there is a need for the club to recruit a new Welfare Officer – a mandatory role. To this end Cathy Eames from the Ladies team is undertaking the training courses via online FA courses Club development revolved around the clubhouse which due to COVID was closed sporadically between November and December because of national and regional level 3 restrictions and then nationally from January to April. ## **Facilities** A major problem during the season continued to be the clubhouse and its mismanagement after previous football managers asked to be responsible for its running In addition COVID19 regulations created a number of issues when facilities re-opened additional lock down measures Ensuring masks used by staff/users in club Disregard for second lock down COVID laws, households mixing and standing Exit door open and one way circulation system and track and trace Covid officer highlights these problems lead to the closure and £1000 fine to a pub in Birkenhead. Need to follow Wirral Guidelines with no spectators, gates locked after arrival of opposition team and managers. Confirm the above with the West Cheshire League, Cheshire and Women's Youth League and the North West Women's Regional League. Utilities increased dramatically over previous year - when season re started and various Cup finals were hosted for Wirral FA and local junior leagues, were 15 cup finals were planned. Health and Safety Environmental health 5 star one certification retained. The club was approached by an international film company about hosting its various Winnebagos, other vehicles and catering equipment while filming in various locations around the Wirral. Actors to be using the site included star Rebel Wilson. The committee agreed and a fee to be agreed for use of the facilities later in the summer. It is hoped that becoming a temporary favoured storage site will lead to further use in the future.
