## **Summary of the work of TCTC Charity for 2023**

## **Key Trustee role holders:**

Chris Nicholson (Chair), Peter Clarke (Secretary), Fitsum Teklu (Treasurer)

## **Other Trustee roles holders:**

Jenelle Clarke (Journal), Richard Shuker (R&D), Abi Tales (Administration), Julia Dillalo, Deborah Judge (C&YPs Group), Luca Mingarelli (International Network), Kevin Gallagher (Commissioning and Consultation), Mike Staines, Peter Cockersell (Adult Mental Health Group), Neelam Khawani-Connett Lived experience Coordinator), Bethan Thibaut (CoC link), Jessica Williams Ciemnyjewski

## **Summary:**

The Consortium for Therapeutic Communities (TCTC) is a member’s association which promotes a valuesbased approach to working with people. We believe that relationships and shared responsibility are central to all organisations and that the overall social environment is critical to the effectiveness of any service. Therapeutic Communities (TCs) are settings where the whole context; the physical environment, the way the day is planned and the relationships a person has, are considered to be part of the therapeutic process.

TCTC has entered a period of growth, and improved financial stability following Covid 19 pandemic where are activities were hampered. After a review of our activities and capacities we recognised that to meet our current charitable aims and objectives we would need to grow the Board of Trustees / Directors and develop new areas of activity. Over 2023, we have increased the number of regular member events and resources, developed our approach to our main conferences, increased and diversified our Board, developed our approach to EDI, as well as initiating new services in Commissioning and Consultation.

Membership is growing, in primary Children and Adolescent services, and but also Adult Mental Health and Individual membership. Attendence at member events and our key conferences has also increased, and board members have produced articles and represented the charity at a number of National conferences, and key events such as Best Practice events at House of Lords, the Children’s Commissioning Conference and others. TCTC is increasing seen as having a leading role in representing therapeutic work within the sector.

The Executive Board (named above) and our Administrative Team (especially Abi Tales) at BestCity have worked enormously hard overt the year to support this grow and development, for which they deserve great credit.

Following our 2023 conference we set up an EDI Group which meets regular and

advisors the Board on policy and approach from an EDI perspective

## e. **International Network**

Details about this new activity will be covered in next year’s report

- **f. Commissioning and Consultancy update**

   - i. TCTC has begun to develop a model based on its historical work in therapeutic childcare. To support quality enhancement we presented at the Children’s Commissioning Conference and published at article in Children and Young People Now magazine. This has led of work with a number of Children’s Commissions and stimulated an increase in membership from providers of children’s homes seeking a more therapeutic model. An outcrop of this initiative are direct consultation services which are in their early phase of planning and governance.

- **g. Communications Groups activities and strategy**

The Comms Group meet regularly and develop strategy for reaching our members and better fulfilling our charitable aims and objectives. The group will be launching the Charity’s Newsletter in 2024 and working in conjunction with the TCTC Journal team

## **h. Conferences**

- i. Main 3-day event – _Inside Outside – Community in the Mind and the Mind in Community_ - 188 delegates

- ii. Online 2-day event – _Where do I belong?_ – which explored the experience of being a service user/expert by lived experience within a TC/EE and why this matters - 48 delegates

- iii. Wrexham university one-day conference – _The Heart and The Hope in Therapeutic Childcare -_ 70 delegates

## **i. Research & Development Group**

- i. Online Day Conference – _Therapeutic milieu or psychotherapy: how do we capture the therapeutic work of TCs and relational environments? -_ 58

delegates

- ii. The groups is undergoing a change in leadership

Annual Report 25.08.24

- j. **The Journal of Therapeutic Communities**

   - i. Established in 1980 – is the only peer-reviewed journal that is dedicated to publishing international research and findings related to TC, therapeutic and enabling environments and related fields. It usually issues three editions per year. In 2023, though the quality of papers published has been very good, editions were slim. The Journal has experience a change of Editor, and editors have not been able to attend Board meetings. I will update in next year’s report, but a Recovery Plan is now in place, including new technical arrangements about the editorial team and more reliable and functional links with the TCTC Board of Trustees. With this in place we aim to see the size and status of the journal improve over 2024/5
