## **REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES for the year ended 31 August 2021**
The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 August 2021. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015).
## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**
## **Objectives and aims**
Pseudomyxoma Survivor's main objectives (as set out in the Constitution) are:
- To relieve the sickness, mental and emotional distress of those suffering from pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), their families and carers,
- To provide funds to support research into pseudomyxoma peritonei, its causes, treatment and cure and to publish the useful results of such research.
- To promote awareness of pseudomyxoma peritonei.
## **Main activities undertaken**
The activities that supported the objectives of the Charity during the year were:
- The provision of a website providing advice, information and support.
- The provision of a private Facebook group which has over 1000 members from across the world. Patients are based in predominantly English speaking countries with members worldwide.
- We provided practical as well as emotional support to patients and families through our grant programme and have given financial support to nine families this year.
- The ongoing provision of a Buddy Scheme to provide one to one support to patients and caregivers around the world.
## **In order to support our patients and their caregivers:**
- We have provided access to a family flat in Manchester, to support the families of those patients being treated at The Christie. The flat is managed by the Christie Charitable Fund on our behalf. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic the referrals were reduced with only 1 family being able to stay for 2 weeks. The funds are being held by The Christie charity to ensure availability as soon as it is required. The flat contains personalised blankets and information about Pseudomyxoma Survivor. £15,000 was paid towards this.
- We have supported nine families with financial grants
- Cards and small gifts were sent to all of the staff who look after PMP patients at Basingstoke hospital, The Christie and The Mater in Dublin in December 2020. Circa 250 staff.
- Ward toiletries were sent to The Christie and Basingstoke.
- We gifted books to those who attended the talk by The Menopause Doctor.
- We provided many online courses/information for patients. Including post-operative physiotherapy for nine patients (which we paid for, provided by Pinc and Steel), meditation, counselling (covering many different subject areas including grief and sense of self), surgical menopause, the pathology of PMP and appendix cancers, Tai Chi and yoga.

- We kept up to date with relevant coronavirus legislation and shared updates as necessary.
## **In order to promote awareness of pseudomyxoma peritonei, Trustees:**
- Attended the Christie patient day in April 2021and spoke at the event
- Attended various online sessions hosted by the Small Charities Coalition and by National Voices
- Attended the Cancer52 meetings online
- Attended relevant EuroPMP meetings
- Promote Rare Disease Day (8th April 2021) and PMP Awareness Month (August)
Pseudomyxoma Survivor's purpose and its activities contribute to the public benefit through activities to support these objectives. We are here to help patients understand the treatment options, provide leaflets and online resources that they can trust. We represent the PMP community through links with other rare disease charities, by attending conferences and by supporting events organised to raise awareness of the disease.
We take pride in the stewardship of our donations which we demonstrated through this year with our committed registration with the Fundraising Regulator.

Pseudomyxoma Survivor has paid due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing its aims and objectives and in planning its future activities.
## **OUR PEOPLE**
Pseudomyxoma Survivor is totally reliant upon volunteers to run and administer the activities of the group. We now have five active Trustees who have a wide range of skills and experience that will enable us to grow and flourish in the future. The Trustees give a huge amount of voluntary time to support the Charity.
Special mention this financial year to all of our volunteers, who help moderate the group and look after the buddies scheme.
Friends of the charity this year that warrant special mention include: Dr Jason Spendelow, Clinical Psychologist, who has also joined us as a medical advisor on our panel, Professor Norman Carr, Pathologist, a current medical advisor for us and Ms Nina Finbow and Mr Nils Blythe who ran a series of after dinner online talks with authors, QC etc including Evan Davies and Griff Rhys Jones.

In addition to the Trustees we have a group of volunteers who actively undertake the day to day administration of the Facebook group and a further 60 who volunteer as Buddys on the Buddy scheme.
## **ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE**
The Covid-19 pandemic continued throughout this financial year, which meant that the majority of public fundraising events that would normally be held in the second half of our financial year were cancelled due to severe restrictions on public gatherings.
Pseudomyxoma Survivor is entirely reliant upon donations for our income and due to our very generous supporters we have received £73,197 in donations and other income. We are indebted to all of our fundraisers and their families and friends for their generosity.
This has meant that we have been able to consolidate funds to ensure the sustainability of the charity and are now in a position to be planning to commit to research programmes in the future and to have reserves.
Our Facebook support group goes from strength to strength and we have continued support for the pseudomyxoma peritonei community on RareConnect, a Eurordis initiative which provides a multi-lingual support platform for rare diseases.
We have continued to develop a close working relationship with the teams at the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and The Christie in Manchester which allows us to better support patients and identify research opportunities.
Once again we were able to retain our status with the Great NonProfits organisation.
## **FUTURE PLANS**
Thanks to our very generous donors, we have plans in place to financially support the following initiatives during the financial year 2021/2022:
- The ongoing provision of family and caregivers accommodation at the Christie Hospital in Manchester.
- The team at Basingstoke Hospital and Southampton University are undertaking a research programme into molecular characterisations of PMP and we will continue financial support of this research.
- We will have discussions with the Christie Hospital in Manchester to continue financially supporting the prerehabilitation study.
- We will continue to promote the Family Grants to give financial support where appropriate.
- We will keep in touch with all of our patients and caregivers especially when we know that they are going through stressful situations.
## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**
We are extremely pleased that we have total funds of £212,506 at the end of the financial year. Through prudence in our activities, we are able to ensure that we will have a reserve in future years. We will do this through our plan which ensures the charity always has reserves to cover our improved grant scheme, basic resources required to keep us ‘in business’ and to attend conferences where we can represent the voice of the PMP community going forward. With appropriate and controlled governance procedures in place, the trustees continue to be confident that grants and awareness activities can increase the value of the charity to the community.
Pseudomyxoma Survivor’s Income and Expenditure is relatively small and consequently the charity does not have sufficient funds to invest in longer term investments such as stocks and shares.
## **Reserves policy**
Through prudence in our activities, we are now in a position to be able to ensure that we have a reserve in future years. ## **Independent examiner's report to the trustees of Pseudomyxoma Survivor**
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Pseudomyxoma Survivor (the Trust) for the year ended 31 August 2021.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner's statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by section 130 of the Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## **1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES**
## **Basis of preparing the financial statements**
The financial statements of the charity, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Charities Act 2011. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
## **Income**
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
## **Expenditure**
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Grants offered subject to conditions which have not been met at the year end date are noted as a commitment but not accrued as expenditure.
## **Taxation**
The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.
## **Fund accounting**
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
