Activities and Achievements :
`
How our activities deliver public benefit:
The charity undertakes a wide range of activities in pursuit of its charitable objectives. The trustees believe that these initiatives, summarised below, offer significant benefits to the wider Luton community. Over the past year, Discover Islam Luton’s public information centre has seen considerable growth, with a notable increase in visitors, particularly through our social impact programmes. These programmes have been instrumental in the town’s post-pandemic recovery. The charity’s contributions have been recognised in various forums, receiving awards for its positive impact during and after the pandemic.
4
Through partnerships with numerous local voluntary sector organisations, we have effectively directed visitors to essential support services. Our collaboration with Luton Foodbank, Community Interest Luton, Courtney Foundation, Inspire FM, Luton Mosques, Lantern, Bedfordshire Learning Link, and Level Trust has enabled us to address food poverty across the town. The rise in the number of refugees in Luton and surrounding areas has underscored our vital role in supporting some of the most vulnerable individuals in the country. The Centre has become a key resource for those seeking assistance, serving as a primary support and referral service.
Discover Islam continues to strive for a positive impact on the wider public and has become a cornerstone of the community through years of dedicated efforts. We have maintained our commitment to training and development by working with hundreds of schools, both locally and nationally, to provide informative assemblies about Islam. We have also facilitated several online programmes to educate organisations on how to better support Muslim staff. Recognising that children and young people are the future, we are dedicated to involving them in creating a more united and peaceful Luton. Our focus has been on reaching schools and young people, teaching them how to live and coexist in a multicultural society. At Discover Islam, we believe that education is not just for the curious minds of children but also a tool for adults to combat negative behaviours and social tensions rooted in ignorance and misconceptions. This remains our primary focus. Our online initiatives have expanded our reach beyond just our town, attracting organisations to participate in our virtual workshops and events from further afield.
The Centre is actively collaborating with local organisations to prepare for the challenging times ahead, including the looming cost of living and energy crisis.
Review of Transactions and Financial Position:
The statement of financial activities showed a net surplus & reserves for the period of £65,250.
Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities:
Company law requires the directors to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company as at the balance sheet date and of its incoming resources and application of resources, including income and expenditure, for the financial year. In preparing those financial statements, the management committee should follow best practice and:
-
select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently.
-
make judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; and
-
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is not appropriate to assume that the company will continue on that basis.
The directors are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the trust and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
The directors/ trustees do not have any shares in the company/charity and are a company limited by
guarantee. This report was approved by the current Trustees/ directors on 31st March 2024.
Signed on behalf of board of directors/trustees.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF DISCOVER ISLAM IN LUTON
For the period from 1 August 2022 to 31 July 2023
I report on the accounts of the company for the period ended 31 July 2023, which are set out on pages 7 to 10.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The trustees (who are also the directors of the company for the purpose of company law) are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011(the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:
- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act.
• to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’, and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner’s statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: to keep accounting records in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006; and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records, comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the Companies Act 2006 and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities have not been met; or
(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
