Activities and Achievements :
`
How our activities deliver public benefit:
The charity carries out a wide range of activities in pursuance of its charitable aims. The trustees consider that these activities, summarised below, provide benefit to the wider community of Luton. In the past year Discover Islam Luton’s public information centre has continued to go from strength to strength with significantly increased number of visitors to the centre and peak visitors coming through our social impact programmes. These programmes have been pivotal in the post pandemic recovery of our Town. The Charity has been recognised in a number of forums, through various awards that have noted its positive impact on the Town through the pandemic and the subsequent recovery from it.
Through partnership work with a range of voluntary sector organisations in the town we have been able to effectively signpost visitors to access support. Our work with Luton Foodbank, Community Interest Luton, Courtney foundation, Inspire FM, Luton Mosques, Lantern, Bedfordshire Learning Link and Level Trust has meant that we were able to provide support in addressing food poverty across the Town. The increase in the number of refugees in Luton and its surrounding areas has meant that we
4
are playing a vital role in supporting those that are amongst the most vulnerable in our country. The Centre has become a focal point for those looking for support and we have acted as a first line support and signposting service.
Discover Islam is continuously striving to make a positive impact on the wider public and through its efforts over the years, it has become the backbone of this community. We have continued with our training and development online, working with hundreds of schools locally and nationally, providing information assemblies about Islam. We have facilitated several online programmes to help educate organisations around how they can support Muslim staff more effectively. As children and young people are our future, we believe strongly in them playing an integral part in helping to create a more united and peaceful Luton for tomorrow. Our focus has been on ensuring the support we provide reaches schools and young people, educating the future generation on how to live and co-exist in a multicultural environment. At Discover Islam, we believe the importance of education extends further than to only the curious minds of children. Rather, we feel it can aid a society of adults in effectively combating negative behaviour and social tensions that are based on incorrect assumptions and ignorance. This continues to be our key focus. Through our online work, we are now reaching a lot further afield than just our Town, with many organisations attending our virtual workshops and events.
The Centre is working closely with local organisations to help prepare for more challenging times ahead with the cost of living and energy crisis that is looming.
Review of Transactions and Financial Position:
The statement of financial activities showed a net surplus & reserves for the period of £61,857.
Statement of Trustees' Responsibilities:
Company law requires the directors to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company as at the balance sheet date and of its incoming resources and application of resources, including income and expenditure, for the financial year. In preparing those financial statements, the management committee should follow best practice and:
-
select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently.
-
make judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; and
-
prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is not appropriate to assume that the company will continue on that basis.
The directors are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the trust and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
The directors/ trustees do not have any shares in the company/charity and are a company limited by
guarantee. This report was approved by the current Trustees/ directors on 04 June 2023.
Signed on behalf of board of directors/trustees.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF DISCOVER ISLAM IN LUTON
For the period from 1 August 2021 to 31 July 2022
I report on the accounts of the company for the period ended 31 July 2022, which are set out on pages 7 to 10.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The trustees (who are also the directors of the company for the purpose of company law) are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011(the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:
• examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act.
• to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
• to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of independent examiner’s report
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’, and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner’s statement
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
(1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: to keep accounting records in accordance with section 386 of the Companies Act 2006; and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records, comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the Companies Act 2006 and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities have not been met; or
(2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
