Background
The Prlory Church of St Mary and St Bega Is the church ofthe Parish of5t Bees. The Prlory, OFiginally an outpost
of St Mary's York, was founded in the early 12th century for a Benedlctine order. The present buildlng, begun
around 11201 probably replaced a pr&Norman church. Today. It is a Grade I listed bulldin8 and Is one ot flve

brvught back into use 8$ a college le¢lure h?11. Irj 1855 the￿ was a major reorderfng of the bullding Interior bv
William Butterfleld. The tower houses a rlng of ei8ht bells.
There has been Christlan worship at the site of the Priory for over one thousand years. On site are two cross
shafts. one fimily dated from the 10th Century, showing VlkinB influence. and the other also fnNn the pre-
Norman era.
The St Bee5 placename isderived from"KTrl(eby Becok".the"Chyrch town of Bega.. which was used in the 12th
Century. St Bega is somethlng of a mystery. She15 sald to have been an liish princess who fled across the 5ea,to
St Bees to avoid an enforced marrlage. This was most likely In the thirty years after 850, when the WikTnES were
settllng Ireland, and leBend has itthat 5hethen lived a Ilfe of piety 8tSt Bees.
The Prlory seats 300+ and conslsts of the original nave, transepts and part of the chancel. The North transept is
the Lady Chapel, seating 2Ck30 people. The Lody Chapel has two statues by Josefina de Vasconcellos. Her work
is displayed in many cathedrals, In the Peace Park at Hlroshima and outside Stormont. Joseftna donated further
statues for a 'Sleeping Chlld Garden, in the Prlory ground5, a place of remembrance for anyone who has lost a
chlld before or after blrth. The 8ankn is open for visltors.
The South trdnsept is occupied by one of the last FathÈrWillisor8ans, completed In 1899, and Is used for recitsls
111 asfor worshlp. There are many requestsfrom visiting organtsts from all.overthe world to play the organ.
The Victorian stained-glass wlndows deplct Old and New Testament scenes In the North and South alsles,
respectively.
In 1981 a mediaeval body In a lead coffln wasfound durlng an arthaeological dig In the mona5tlc south transept
area of the Lady Chapel. The 'St Bees Man,. datlng from medlaeval tlmes, Is considered to be one of the best-
preserved bodies found in Europe. Detsils rdn be found In the history exhlblllon in the church.
Because of its age and hlstorical importance, the Priory holds a number of similar'trea5ures' amongstwhlch are
the Fox Screen and, from more recent times. the beautiful, embroldered wall hanglng at the East End, which
was made a5 part of our Millennium ￿lebratIOnS. For these and many other reasons, the Prk)ry features in
