Our ¥￿10n
A world where people. trees and biodrrferse forests thrive together in a safe climate.
Ourpurpose
To support communities to secure. sustain and restore tropical forests as part of our
natlonal response to cllmate change.
What we do
The tslze of Wales, Is often used a5 a measure of deforestation. Size of Wales was
established in 2011 with the aim of turning that negative Into a positive: to help to protect
an area of tropical forest the size of Wales (2 Million hectares) as part of Wales, natlonal
response to climate change.
We provlde fundlng and expertlse to Indlgenous and local communltles In tropical reglons
to SUPPOrt them to secure and sustain thelr precious forests. grow more trees and
establish 5UStalnable livellhoods. Through educatlon, community engagement and
advocacy, we also raise awareness in Wales of the importance of troplcal forests and trees
in tackling climate change. We inspire people to see that they can be part of the solutlon
and reduce Waleg overseas deforestatlon footprinL
Why we do ft (publlc benefft)
We are a cllmate change charlty. The world is facing a cllmate and nature crlsls. Desplte
irrefutsble evidence that manvmade emissions are heatlng our planet and de5tabili5ing
our climate, global greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise. Globally, we have ernitted
as much atmospheric carbon in the past thirty years as we did in the previou5 two
centuries of industrialisation. Emissions have continued to 80 up by 1.596 per year in the
last decade.
Fast and deep cuts to global emlssions are needed. and trees and forests are an essentlal
part of the solution. The world's forests contsin approximately 300 billion tonnes of
carbon and absorb approximatety 2.6 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. That 15
roughty equivalent to one-third of the carbon dioxlde released by buming fossil fuels each
year. The evidence is clear that stopping global deforestation and restoring degraded
forests is critical to limiting global temperature rises fvrther. Forests are crucial for life on
earth.

Objectlves and actlvltles (¢oftthu•dJ
Trees and forests are also crucialto cllmate change adaptation. By providing a wide range
of ecosystem seNices they reduce social and ecosystem vulnerability in a changing
cllmate and contribute to human wellbeing. Thls includes reducing soil degradation,
erosion and flooding and providing shade, habitaL food. medicine and livelihoods. An
estimated 29.6 million hectares of forest were lost globally in 2024 . That's over 14 times
the size of Wales and the loss is accelerating. The annual rate of tropical tree cover Ios5
nearly doubled from 6.7 million hectares in 21x11 to 15.0 million hectares In 2024, with
global deforestation itself now estimated to account for 11>15% of global human Induced
greenhouse gas emissions.
Tropical forests are at the front Ilne of thSs forest loss. Whlle troplcal forests coverjust 6%
of the planevs land surface, they contain 80% of the worlds documented species.
They are also home to milllons of people. who depend on them for their food and
IlvelShoods. If we continue at our current rate of deforestation and habitat conversion, we
risk crossing numerous tipping points which would pose serious risks to the stability of
our global climate, human welkbeing and biodNersity.'
Our alms
Ourwork focuses on achieving four strategic goals:
1. Support community projects that secure, and sustain over the long term. an area
of tropical forest at least the size of Wales (at least 2 million hettaresl
2. Support communitie5 totackle climate change and develop sustainable livelihoods
by growing millions of trees
3. Move Wales towards eliminating Imported deforestation from our economy by
2030
4. Insplre people across Wales to reduce thelr forest footprinL support troplcal
forests and take cllmate actlon.
Ensurlnz our work dellvers our alms
We revlew our alms and activitles annually when we plan our activities for the coming
year. This review looks at whatwe achieved and the 0￿cOmeS of our work in the previous
12 months. and the public benefit of the work in line with our charitable purposes. Our
annual planning involves setting a work plan and targets for the coming year. This helps
us to ensure that our attivities remain focused on delivering our aims. Size of Wales also
